Buy Low- Gilbert 'Hibachi' Arenas, Sell High - Nene Hilario

It's week one of the playoffs for football here in fantasy sports land and the Thief had been glued to the TV all day. No matter, I've still got time to drop a quick buy low and sell high on you balla's. After all, If there's one thing I learned from my high school coach, it's this:

The Only Way To Win, Is To Work Harder Than Everybody Else.

Nuff Said, let's move on to the picks of the day.

Buy Low - Gilbert Arenas - G - Washington Wizards
Gilbert started the season on fire, opening the season with a 29 point 9 assist performance, followed two nights later with a 32 point performance. Things went pretty downhill from there, fairly quickly. There was talk of a an injury, talk that he was just done, and most importantly for us his FG% was rock bottom. I tend to ignore rumors like that, and focus on the numbers. The Thief saw a guy who hadn't played in awhile, and was still getting his body used to the rigors of the game.

I waited for the Buy signal on Gilbert, and last night we got it. 22 points, 11 boards, 10 assists...yeah that's what we were waiting for. Gilbert is still showing numbers well below his career averages, and there's a chance the owner of him in your league either missed the performance last night, or will use it to sell him off. Time to strike! Let's take a look at the numbers:

GILBERT ARENAS
CAT   2009   career
PTS   20.7   22.7
REB   4.0    4.2
AST   6.8    5.6
3's   1.7    2.1
STL   1.0    1.7
BLK   0.2    0.2
TO    3.6    3.3
FG%   40.3   42.6
FT%   70.5   80.5

The extra dimes have been nice this year. I'm going to say that while they might not last, it's important to note that Flip Saunders has asked Gilbert to work on distribution over scoring. We know Gilberts last healthy season was a near MVP performace. I think he's still that guy, and there's a small window here where a non Top Three Tiered player (say like Tony Parker) could land you Agent Zero. Oh, and as for the 70% from the charity stripe. What do I mean when I say MEAN REVERSION?

"It's really frustrating," Arenas said. "I'm shooting them (free throws) all day. I mean, I don't even know why I'm sitting here talking about some free throws. I never fathomed that I'd be missing free throws again. Maybe it's just mental, because I'm making them in practice."

That FT% will be turning around real soon. Arenas currently ranks about 130 overall in standard roto formats. This is top 50 talent in a terrible season, top 15 most likely. Get on the block and work that trade!

Sell High - Nene Hilario - C - Denver Nuggets
I wasn't a believer last year, and I'm less of a believer this year. Whatever, Nene the Brazilian Monster has put up some great numbers and the time to cash in is now. This is a great guy to move in a deal for Amar'e or in a package to land a Tier 1 player. Let's check the numbers:

NENE HILARIO
CAT   2009   Career
PTS   13.3   11.6
REB   8.8    6.8
AST   2.5    1.7
BLK   1.0    0.9
3's   0      0
STL   1.5    1.3
TO    1.5    2.0
FG%   58.3   54.8
FT%   73.4   66.8

Not too shabby there, he's ahead in almost every category. This isn't some sophmore player we're talking about here, this is Nene who's in his 8th season! If nothing else the assists should drop and the TO's should rise. Nene currently ranks around 11 overall in a standard Roto league. He might be good, be he isn't 11 good. Cash this puppy in for a true 11, like Brandon Roy or Jason Kidd or Dwight Howard.

Alright, that's all for tonight. Back to football, where I'll hopefully be moving on to the second round of the playoffs by the end of the night. As usual feel free to drop any trade questions in the comments.

  1. I have a bit of a dilemma right now, i got Salmons for my worst player right now, but there are also Biedrins, Jameer Nelson and Mike Dunleavy on the FA. I really woud like Biedrins because I cuold use the rebs and hes fg%. Maybe I could also get Murphy for Jason Terry who I can afford to lose?
    Thanks ahead for any advice!

  2. You need to work a 2-1 trade. Whenever there's guys on the FA Wire that I want on my squad, I work the 2-1 deals. Try to trade up for a Tier One or Tier Two player.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Hey man love the blog. Quick question, would you consider Dunleavy a sell high and since Salmons is a buy low do you think that could be a good trade for me? In a 12 team h2h btw.

  4. Hey thief,

I started to pull some thievin so wish me luck. I'm offering Nene & Rip Hamilton for Amare. Let's see if I can pull it off. The target is married to his players, so I am not sure if I can land Amare. Talk to you later

  5. Hey thief! I'm struggling in my 8-team league and according to your numbers, I'm below average in rebounds, 3s, and steals and just bout average in every other category.

My team consists of B Roy, AI, J Kidd, Mike Dunleavy, Rudy Gay, Bargnani, P Gasol, Andrew Bynum, Tony Parker, Lamarcus Aldridge, Paul pierce, Kendrick Perkins, and Joel Pryzbilla.

I just dropped CDR for Pryzbilla. I desperately need to make a good trade and I just don't know who to give up, and who to trade for! Please help!

  6. I just got offered a trade and I was wondering what you would think about it. I get Duncan, Rose, and Villanueva. I give Deron Williams, Marc Gasol, and Kevin Love. Please let me know what you think.

  7. Anony1, dunleavy for Salmons is a good trade for sure.

    Anony2, HOOK IT UP PLAYA!!

Sennator, Looks like you could use Rashard Lewis. Try dealing Tony Parker and dunleavy for him.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Take out Deron, put in Tony Parker an send it back over. You're supposed to do the thievin balla, not him!

  9. Hey thief, I forgot to mention, I offered this trade.

    Paul Pierce and Bargnani

    for

    Emeka Okafor and Rajon Rondo

Would this be a good deal if it was accepted?

Also, I just offered up Tony parker and Dunleavy for Rashard Lewis.. I'll let you know how it goes!

    Thanks!

  10. Nah dood, Sauce says you need threes. That's why I said rashard. Your trade has you losing two outside shooters. No good. Trust the sauce.

  27. Hey Thief!

Bad news. CP3's owner just officially rejected the Dirk trade. He says he needs CP3 for the assists and wants to ride out Caron's performance... (smart guy). Doesn't help that Caron just put up some good numbers. He's 8th in the league though, so if Caron takes a while to be consistent and I offer Nash, I might be able to close it in time...

Is there anything I can do in the meantime? I proposed the Bargnani/Ilyasova trade for Deron Williams, it's a little low, I know, but this guy doesn't seem to check his team. So, I might upgrade it, but I'm not sure if it'll even go through since he's never on.

I've been trying to deal for Arenas and Al Jefferson for awhile, but the owner hasn't been checking either. This league is apparently pretty inactive :(.

    My team again:
    Dirk
    Love
    Nash
    Josh Smith
    Rondo
    Bargnani
    Lewis
    Westbrook
    Jeff Green
    Felton
    Ben Gordon
    Haywood
    Ilyasova

I dropped CDR for Felton. CDR was just too streaky for me, and now he's injured. I got Felton for one of his good games now too. I don't think he'll be consistent like this for the season, but I'm going to ride his highs, and try to trade him away before its too late.

    The new sauce numbers:

(admittedly they're lower now, but Ben's production will increase them, I'm sure)

    Pts: 15.5
    Reb: 6.3
    Ast: 3.9
    Stl: 1.1
    3: 1.0
    Blk: 0.8

I'm leading the league in blocks, distant second in assists, third and fourth in rebounds and points respectively...

  28. Hi Thief,

Just found about the blog a week ago and I'm loving it, love the analysis and the advice!

What do you think of Bosh+Landry for Danny Granger+Kevin Martin? From what I've read, I know I'm not supposed to target players injured / coming off of injuries, but this trade seems like a great way to turn one Tier 2 into two Tier 2s for my team that's not dominant in any one category.

If needed here are my league details + sauce: 10 team H2H league (11 cats, standard 8 as well as TOs, free throws made, and 3PT%), here's my team and the sauce:

    Baron Davis
    Jason Kidd
    Chauncey Billups
    Ray Allen
    John Salmons
    Courtney Lee
    Michael Beasley
    Carl Landry
    Chris Bosh
    Andrea Bargnani
    Mehmet Okur
    Andrew Bogut
    Erick Dampier

    Pts: 14.79
    Reb: 6.03
    Ast: 2.92
    Treys: 0.95
    Stl: 1.05
    Blk: 0.87

    Thanks,
    Anthony

  29. What should I do with Elton Brand? Is he a sell high right now? Will Speights mess up his numbers when he gets back?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Sennator, try dealing Big Perk for Hibachi Arenas, then grab Dalembert off the FA wire.

Skeet, my school time post will help. But it's add the averages of each guy and divide by number of guys. Be sure to only include starters.

Anony1, is that a trick question?! Yes you should do both, then send the Thief a league invite next year!

Michael, need your sauce numbers bro. Read the post secret sauce, it'll help us both to evaluate your team.

Fang, same thing. We can't evaluate without your sauce numbers. Your team is better than u think.

Dave! What up playa! Sorry bout the CP3 trade, he IS a smart manager. Don't be afraid to use phone/email to deal for Deron. Get a lil pushy. I like you goin after Arenas and Al Jeff too. Hang in there, sauce says your team should be top 3 as is for your league.

Anthony, from what I know, Martin will be back mid January and Granger is a big ? for timeframe. At the least there's no rush to make that deal. Wait for more clarification, especially from Granger, that injury scares me cause it lingers.

Anony, People keep talkin about Speights. Is he due back this week? There's no rush playa. Sixers are shopping Brand hard to other teams, hate to see ya deal him off before we even get a whiff of where he'll go.

  31. Who do you think I can trade for using Nene?
Is Nene and Terry for Stoudmire or Durant too much?

Also what's your view on how much Pierce and Roy are actually worth?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Nope those are perfect deals. Especially for Amare. Roy is a Tier two player, I wouldn't be looking to deal him unless I got a tier one back. For Pierce I'd try n get a Tier one or two, but def sell him high here. If you're unfamiliar, refer to the post Top Tiers.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ok this trade just went down. How this
    Nene/Pierce/Terry
    For
    Salmons/B.Roy/D.Lee

    I recieved salmons/roy/lee.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Wow great trade! Roy dominates Pierce. Lee dominates Nene. Salmons and Terry are pretty even, but Terry has been hot and Salmons cold, which should flop, so I like Salmons going forward.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Thanks!!
I followed your advice. Now let's see if I can move up from second to first following these trades.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Hi Thief!
How do you think Z.Randolph and Haywood

Can they keep thier performance? or Just
    look like sell high candidate

    ReplyDelete
  37. My team...
    13 man Roto so I don't know what sauce # I need
    but
    Points 15.55
    Assits 3.39
    Rebounds 6.23
    3s 0.61
    Steals 0.95
    Blocks 0.69

I'm really behind in 3s and others a little under average of the 12 man roto numbers so I should be ok.
I did some major trades and I only have 2 people that I started with.

    C.Paul (drafted)
    B.Roy
    O.Mayo
    D.Jones
    J.Salmons
    D.West(PF)
    D.Lee
    P.Gasol
    J.Przybilla
    S.Hawes (drafted)

    Bench
    Matt Bonner
    Tyrus Thomas INJ
    Marreese Speights INJ

Since it's 13 man roto, the FA is really dry...
Brandon Rush, Yi, Marcus Thorton, Omri Cassapi, Nate Robinson are available...
Currently in 2nd place behind in 3s and FT% and points but FT% and Points are from the team I drafted.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Anony, the jury is out on z-Bo, he's been solid, I wouldn't deal him just yet. As for Haywood, try working him in a 2-1 with one of your better bench guys (like a dunleavy) for someone like Okafor.

Epiphany, love the name bro. Your team looks alright do far, I agree youre down in treys but Johnny salmons will pick that up. You have no good sell highs right now, be patient and we'll reasess soon.

    ReplyDelete
  39. what are your thoughts on Jammeer Nelson? Worth giving up Ray Allen to get him? bibby and hill? your take? im just worried that allens minutes will decrease as the season wears on.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Great Blog. I'm glad that I found it. I'm in a 9 team roto leage with 9 standard cats. I need help with my 3 balls and FG% and thats about it basically. I'm in first for pts, reb, ast, stls and blks. I have decided to punt TO's. How can I help my FG% & 3pts made. I've been looking to acquire Jet and now with this blog i'm considering Redd but don't know what to offer. Here is my roster->

    PG: Rondo-T.Parker-Tyreke Evans
    SG: Wade-BRoy-Morrow
    SF: Iguodala-Deng
    PF: Nowitzki-Garnett
    C: B.Lopez-Brand-Pryzbilla

    Thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  41. 3 things, first read the post secret sauce so we can work the numbers to see what u really need, then if you DO need treys, shoot for either a Dirk for CP3 trade or a Pryzbilla for Salmons, Ben Gordon or Eric Gordon trade. Good luck!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Hey, I just shipped Carter and Roy for Wade and West. I had an abundance of points, but I was lacking a bit in assists, so I'm thinking of shipping Jamison for a Pierce? Will that be worth it?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Hi Thief,

Fang Again. Got the number for my starting line up:

    Points 17.51
    Assists 3.94
    Rebs 5.09
    Blocks 0.49
    Steals 1.20
    3Ps 1.24

So according to your number, i'm lacking in blocks. but have some guys in bench that can make up for it. However, i'm dying in fg% b/c of arenas and B. davis. I think i need to trade one of them for a forward with better fg%.

    Starting line up:
    Chris Paul
    Gilbret Arenas
    Baron Davis
    Paul Pierce
    Jason Rich.
    Jamal Crawford
    Josh Howard
    Thaddeus Young
    Zach Randolph
    Brook Lopez

    Bench:
    Kenyon Martin
    Joel Przybilla
    Chris anderson
    Shawn Marion
    Kirk Hinrich
    tracy McGrady

And this is a 12 teams H2H league. Not many players in avaliable in the Bench.

    T.J. Ford
    Mike Bibby
    Andris Biedrins
    Mickael Pietrus
    James Harden

    Any suggestions?

    ReplyDelete
  44. I went over the math and my three ball production came out at .71 for my starting lineup and that's with using Morrow as a utility. Everything else came up looking real nice. I was above the average for Pts, REb, ast, stls and blks.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Thief, I take back my last trade. The final trade that was accepted after lengthy negotiation was:

I give: Roy, Carter, Gallinari for
I get: Wade, Ben Gordon, Murphy

I had the choice between West and Murphy...and I chose Murphy as he would help replace my 3pt needs that I lost with gallinari. Did i do the right choice?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Fang, good numbers! Now try a 2-1 with either Pierce or Davis and target Dwayne Wade. Good luck!

James, the sauce is key to understanding your team. I bet you look better than you thought!

FlyHigh, I love that deal for you! Wade is as close to Tier One as you can get!

    ReplyDelete
  47. =] do u think west > murphy in long run tho?

    ReplyDelete
  48. I'm indifferent between the two really. Too close to call.

  49. Hey thief thinking got offered devin harris for vince carter, in a H2H league what you think?

    ReplyDelete
  50. sorry forgot to add my sauce numbers
    pts 16.4 , ast 2.6, 3ptm 0.8, fg% 552, stl 1.03

    ReplyDelete
  51. I like you getting Harris, no doubt. It'll go a long way toward fixin those low dimes! But VC for Harris, playa you ain't getting PAID on that. Ask for a little more, but keep at it. Toss in a bench player on your side for a nice Buy Low on his side. Let's ink this deal!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Hey Thief. You were right Your sauce has put the strengths of my team into a much more clear persepctive. That being said my three pts made are well below the number I need/want. A guy in my league owns Arenas, Salmons and Ben Gordon. He has asked for my Tyreke Evans and Deng for Gordon and Salmons. I'm hesitant to give up Reke. What do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  53. Jimmy! Top o the mornin to ya. I hear you wantin to keep reke, especially if you're in a keeper league. Counter him with Deng for Ben, straight up. Good luck!
