5 Free Services to Estimate the Value of your Blog

Many blog owners look closely on the PageRank as a criterion of popularity of the web site. However, Page Rank is just one of the ways to evaluate where you stand as a webmaster. Another measure to consider is Website value. Though there is no accurate measure of how much a website is worthy of, there are some online tools which provide a vague idea through its own calculations.

The calculations may be based on the Google PR, website backlinks, Alexa ranking, Compete rankings, Quantcast rankings, URLs submitted to social networking sites etc. Some of the most popular websites to check your website worth are given below.

  1. MyWebsiteWorth is a free tool which will analyze your site, and let you know how well it’s being monetized, and what value you could sell it for. The calculation is based on Alexa ranking, Compete rank, Google PR, estimated number of visitors to the site and People rank.

  1. Cubestat is a free tool for website value calculation, estimations and information. It can estimate the website worth, daily pageviews and daily ads revenue of the present domain.

  1. Stimator is a new resource that is out in public beta and they take into consideration aspects such as TLD strength and motivation factors within the buying market. For its part, web factors and comparisons with other sites on the database are also fully accounted for.

  1. U2WS. Among many options, you will be also able to get the page rank, the traffic details, etc. Finally, if you are interested in getting to know in what part of the world the website is located, you can also do that. You get detailed information about websites, like traffic details, web statistics, website estimated value and daily income, rankings, related links, host ip address and much more.

  1. WorthBot collects data about the target webiste including visits, traffic, ad views and more. Code then manipulates that data using a secret internal calculation in order to provide a rough site worth estimation.

How objective the information is? You see a huge gap in value estimates by different services. So, use the obtained results for your reference only.

Is PageRank sculpting now useless?

Six months ago, Google’s Matt Cutts confirmed that NoFollowed tags no longer work as a tool for sculpting PageRank and that he would not recommend PageRank sculpting in general. Despite the passage of time and much discussion in forums and on blogs, many website owners are still confused about the importance of optimizing how PageRank flows throughout their site.

My personal opinion, based on experience we’ve had working with client sites, is that it can still be important to optimize PageRank flow through a site. In this article, I’ll explain why, along with recommendations on how to do it. And this isn’t just about achieving higher rankings. I’ll also suggest ways to improve your site’s relevance to searchers once they arrive.

The rules have changed

In 2005, largely in response to the prevalence of blog comment spam, Google said that NoFollowed links “won’t get any credit when we rank websites in our search results.” That meant you could insert NoFollow tags as a way to shape how SEO credit flows through a site—a practice often referred to as “PageRank sculpting.” If you tagged links as NoFollowed, all the credit they would have otherwise received would be redistributed to other links, thereby giving those other links additional credit.

Then, at SMX Advanced 2009, the rules changed again. As explained in Matt Cutts’ post, Google would no longer allow credit to simply flow past NoFollowed links. Now that credit just evaporates. It no longer flows to pages that would have received it as extra credit under the 2005 rules. This means that website owners must now use other methods to affect credit flow—such as changing the site map.

Is PageRank sculpting now useless?

In my opinion, PageRank sculpting still has tremendous value. Yes, website owners must find a new way to sculpt PageRank—but with the opportunity to increase website usability and also achieve better SEO results at the same time.

That opportunity comes from exploiting the difference between PageRank sculpting using NoFollow tags and approaching PageRank sculpting as a general strategy.

PageRank sculpting as a strategy

PageRank sculpting in general has and will continue to be an important aspect of onsite search engine optimization despite Google’s change in its NoFollow policy. Consider the meaning of “PageRank sculpting.” Although I have not been able to find a universal definition, here is one I propose, based on the needs of website owners:

PageRank sculpting is the application of rules regarding the quantity, prioritization and relevance of links on pages throughout a site to efficiently distribute PageRank. For example, suppose a page on my site has 100 PageRank “points” to pass on to the pages that it links to. I will want to be strategic about how those points are distributed rather than squander them indiscriminately.

If the page links to too many pages or has less important links above more important links, or has links that are not relevant given the purpose of that page, I will want to make some major changes. My initial aim may be to “sculpt PageRank” in order to improve SEO rankings. However, in the process of organizing my links for better SEO results I should also be organizing my site to make it more useful and more intuitive for users. In fact, it’s almost impossible to do one without doing the other. That’s why PageRank sculpting should be tackled in tandem with the pursuit of good information architecture. Choices that serve the purposes of one serve the purposes of both.

What works for Google works for users

As search engines continue to evolve there will be increasing overlap between the things you do to improve Google rankings and the things you do to improve the experience of searchers who find your site in Google results. Here is a basic example of how PageRank sculpting and good information architecture can work together.

This is our made-up page called “Page 0.” As you can see, it links to 35 pages:

scotts1

Page 0 has 70 points of PageRank to share by virtue of the other webpages that link to it (not illustrated). Using the classic definition of PageRank that Matt Cutts uses in his blog post, each of the 35 pages it links to receives two points of PageRank.

scotts2

From an SEO perspective this works if pages 1-35 each have target keyword phrases of equal importance and value. From an information architecture (IA) perspective this works if pages 1-35 all have content highly relevant to the searchers who reach Page 0. But we’re not living in a dream world.

Regarding SEO: Pages 1-35 will be targeting a diversity of keywords. Those keywords will each have varying “potential” based on how popular they are, how competitive they are and how relevant they are to the products offered on the site. We want to sculpt PageRank so that more points go to pages that target high potential search phrases and away from pages that target low or lower potential search phrases. This requires reorganizing the sitemap such that links are selectively removed from Page 0.

Regarding information architecture: Pages 1-35 will have content suited to a wide variety of searchers, but it’s likely that only a small subset of those pages will be highly relevant and valuable to searchers who enter on Page 0. We want to architect Page 0 with the goal of prioritizing highly relevant links, and removing links that have low or lower relevance from the page.

PageRank sculpting (SEO) and information architecture goals must both be pursued simultaneously for optimal results. Why?

In my opinion, the more PageRank points that Page 0 passes to the remaining pages that it links to:

  • The more accessible those pages will be to search engine spiders
  • The higher the PageRank will be for those pages, thus contributing to increased rankings (all things equal)
  • The less PageRank points that will be “misspent” on low potential pages

The more useful Page 0 is to the subset of searchers who visit it:

  • The more likely it will be to accumulate links in the future and the more PageRank points it will have to disseminate to the pages it links to
  • It’s bounce rate will be reduced, thus improving the likelihood it will achieve or maintain higher rankings for the terms it targets
  • The page will feel “smaller” and more intuitive to searchers who find it, which in our experience leads to higher site-wide conversion rates assuming most other pages on the website follow this same philosophy

Also note the role of prominence—another example of how something that affects Google search results also affects searcher relevance. Just as searchers do, search engine spiders give more attention to pages closer to the top (those that are more prominent). That’s because spiders won’t follow every link from page to page every time they traverse a site. Pages higher in a site’s hierarchy receive more spider visits and so have a higher probability of being re-indexed—and therefore of receiving more inherent strength in search engines.

Link allocation criteria

Ideally we want only pages with both high SEO potential and high searcher relevance (i.e., the “sweet spot”) linked from pages like Page 0 that have lots of PageRank to share—as illustrated below:

scotts3

Even though they might not fall into the sweet spot, the most relevant links should usually be maintained even if they offer low SEO opportunity. In the past, low SEO opportunity links may have been NoFollowed as part of PageRank sculpting activities. Even though Google says there’s no benefit to NoFollowing these low opportunity links, if we believe their presence will improve the searcher’s experience, they could become a net SEO benefit. You do want to be stingy about linking to low opportunity pages, so consider using your analytics programs to weed out the truly relevant pages from the not-so-relevant pages and preserve your PageRank for high opportunity pages.

When we’re done prioritizing links that offer high SEO potential and high relevance to searchers, Page 0 might look like this:

scotts4

PageRank points would then be allocated this way:

scotts5

Now, high SEO potential pages have more than three times the PageRank points coming from Page 0 and there is less clutter for searchers to sort through once they reach the site. Techniques To Conserve PageRank Points

Here are some techniques to reduce the number of pages that a page links to—thereby saving PageRank points for key pages—techniques that also improve usability and conversion rates. These particular techniques resulted from conversion optimization testing we performed for particular clients, and may not work for you.

Reorganize the links that fall under a certain page on your site’s hierarchy. For example, you may find ten low SEO potential pages with very similar content. Rather than link to each one of these pages on Page 0, you may want to link to only one of them. Then link that page to the other nine.

Remove low SEO potential pages that offer little value to searchers you want coming to your site. You can then redirect them in an SEO-friendly way to more valuable pages. On category or product pages (or any page that appears deep in your site) remove the standard site-wide navigation. Replace it with several highly relevant links and content specific to that page. Provide a “continue shopping” or “continue browsing” button in the navigation for searchers who want to access other content on your site. Caveat: Test this tactic, as it might have an impact on usability; more on that below.

Perform usability testing and track conversion rates after you make your changes so that you know whether your changes actually have the effect you intended. Bear in mind that removing site-wide navigation from certain pages goes against standard usability practices. However, when done selectively, we have found it to be an effective practice when applied to some websites for improving both page rank and usability.

It’s also a good idea to perform usability testing and track conversion rates after you make your changes so that you know whether your changes actually have the effect you intended. Bear in mind also that removing site-wide navigation from certain pages goes against standard usability practices. However, when done selectively, we have found it to be an effective practice when applied to some websites for improving both page rank and usability.

A broader context

In my opinion, PageRank sculpting has a lot of value, especially when viewed in a broader context than just inserting NoFollowed tags. More than ever, your traffic volume depends on how well you prioritize high potential search phrases and pages. Both traffic volume and conversion rates depend on what searchers do once they actually reach a page. Do PageRank sculpting right and you’ll simultaneously achieve a stronger SEO result and convert more shoppers into customers.

8 Common Mistakes of Guest Posting on Blogs

Link building is one of the most useful approaches to get more visibility to your blog, improve its rating, and attract visitors your site. All SEO experts agree that it is generally helpful, but the links building strategies might be different, and not all of them are bringing equally positive results.

If you are trying to build links that point back to your blog or website one of the most powerful ways you can do that is by offering to write content on other blogs. This is a little different than landing a freelance writing job because your offer is to help bloggers by writing content on their blog for free. While this might not sound like a very good deal for you in terms of the return on invested time, in fact, it really is.

Paying for links is risky. Google has a good sniffer for spotting paid or sponsored links. Doing link exchanges, especially blogroll exchanges, has proved to have very limited value. Ordering sponsored posts is very risky as well because you then might put your site on Google’s radar of potentially “blacklisted sites”.

Writing guest posts is a safe and very natural way to score powerful backlinks to your blog or website. Consider this too. When you publish content on other blogs, you are in complete control of the link building process. You are in complete control of how you want to word your content and shape and mold your links pointing back to your site. In other words, writing guest posts on other blogs gives you the ability to take a blank piece of digital paper and turn it into anything you want.

Guest posting on other blogs has other benefits as well. For one, you’ll find that you have an endless supply of blogs where you can publish your content on. Most bloggers struggle for material. Just like a journalist or a columnist, often bloggers struggle from writers block and totally enjoy it when someone offers to provide them with killer content.

Another benefit is the fact that not only can you build links by writing the content, you can also take a chance to use the post for indirect “selling” yourself and your content to readers of the blog you are publishing on. This gives you an amazing opportunity to increase the number of regular reader who read your own blog or website.

The only disadvantage is the amount of time you need to invest into writing content. One thing about that though is I believe that you always get back when you put in. Meaning, if you invest the time into writing quality content on other blogs, your return will be great as well.

Common mistakes with guest posts
  • Writing the guest post before you pitch the owner. Please send him/her several prospective post ideas, with bullet-pointed sub-points, and let owner suggest the best one for the audience.
  • Not doing your research. Read carefully author’s post and note the format of the blog, you are addressing your post. Your publication should match the spirit, structure, and format of the site, otherwise it might be rejected by the owner.
  • Submitting link-baits. Avoid submitting the posts that due to the time-limited actuality will be forgotten by the next day. High-traffic sites, for the most part, want great articles that will stand the test of time.
  • Using someone else’s content. One of the stupidest things you can do when submitting a post to someone else’s blog is to use someone else’s content. You do need a positive publicity, and not a negative one. Be professional and responsible, whatever you do and respect the host.
  • Using already published content. Don’t submit a post that you’ve already posted on your blog (or that you intend to publish on your blog in the future). As you know, having the same content in multiple places on the web doesn’t look good for search engines, and the blog owner might be very strict about that. Write and submit something unique. If you do intend to post something in multiple places make sure you get the approval of the blogger first.
  • Submitting self promotional content. The main reason that you as a guest poster are likely to engage in guest posting is to get exposure to a wider audience. That’s pretty well understood by everyone – however sometimes posts go too far and become more about the guest poster than anything else. If you’re going to use links back to your own blog inside the post (as opposed to just a byline) then make sure they’re completely relevant to the post itself and useful to readers. If you’re too self-promotional you’re less likely to have your post accepted and if it is you could end up hurting your reputation with those who read the post.
  • Making the blog post all about your opinion. Nobody cares about you. Use research, charts, and expert quotes to back up your argument, and create an interesting thesis.
  • Underestimating how long it takes to write a good post. On your blog, you might have great posts, average posts, or weak posts. You are the owner. But, when you propose your writing to the fellow blogger take your time to make a great irresistible content. You want attract the readers attention, so make it perfect by all means.

How to Handle duplicate content within your own website

Handling duplicate content within your own website can be a big challenge. Websites grow; features get added, changed and removed; content comes—content goes. Over time, many websites collect systematic cruft in the form of multiple URLs that return the same contents. Having duplicate content on your website is generally not problematic, though it can make it harder for search engines to crawl and index the content. Also, PageRank and similar information found via incoming links can get diffused across pages we aren't currently recognizing as duplicates, potentially making your preferred version of the page rank lower in Google.

Steps for dealing with duplicate content within your website
  1. Recognize duplicate content on your website.
The first and most important step is to recognize duplicate content on your website. A simple way to do this is to take a unique text snippet from a page and to search for it, limiting the results to pages from your own website by using a site:query in Google. Multiple results for the same content show duplication you can investigate.

  2. Determine your preferred URLs.
Before fixing duplicate content issues, you'll have to determine your preferred URL structure. Which URL would you prefer to use for that piece of content?

  3. Be consistent within your website.
Once you've chosen your preferred URLs, make sure to use them in all possible locations within your website (including in your Sitemap file).

  4. Apply 301 permanent redirects where necessary and possible.
If you can, redirect duplicate URLs to your preferred URLs using a 301 response code. This helps users and search engines find your preferred URLs should they visit the duplicate URLs. If your site is available on several domain names, pick one and use the 301 redirect appropriately from the others, making sure to forward to the right specific page, not just the root of the domain. If you support both www and non-www host names, pick one, use the preferred domain setting in Webmaster Tools, and redirect appropriately.

  5. Implement the rel="canonical" link element on your pages where you can.
Where 301 redirects are not possible, the rel="canonical" link element can give us a better understanding of your site and of your preferred URLs. The use of this link element is also supported by major search engines such as Ask.com, Bing and Yahoo!.

  6. Use the URL parameter handling tool in Google Webmaster Tools where possible.
If some or all of your website's duplicate content comes from URLs with query parameters, this tool can help you to notify us of important and irrelevant parameters within your URLs. More information about this tool can be found in our announcement blog post.

What about the robots.txt file?

One item which is missing from this list is disallowing crawling of duplicate content with your robots.txt file. We now recommend not blocking access to duplicate content on your website, whether with a robots.txt file or other methods. Instead, use the rel="canonical" link element, the URL parameter handling tool, or 301 redirects. If access to duplicate content is entirely blocked, search engines effectively have to treat those URLs as separate, unique pages since they cannot know that they're actually just different URLs for the same content. A better solution is to allow them to be crawled, but clearly mark them as duplicate using one of our recommended methods. If you allow us to crawl these URLs, Googlebot will learn rules to identify duplicates just by looking at the URL and should largely avoid unnecessary recrawls in any case. In cases where duplicate content still leads to us crawling too much of your website, you can also adjust the crawl rate setting in Webmaster Tools.

Webtalks Pagerank 5

Greetings.Google today, rolled out the snapshot of current pagerank. This blog is getting a PR of 5 this time. This is a good jump from PR 3 which had been there for quite long.Surprisingly, this time there was no BackLink export, but who cares? Its party time here as I have over taken some top-notch blogs like john chow(4) and dosh dosh(4).

This update is accompanied by the feed chicklet getting into 3 digits.Currently, it is showing 101 readers.Thank you for subscribing to the feed and if you haven't yet, please do so:they are fast and ad free

The secret
Nothing.Avoid too many links on home page.Get relevant quality backlinks.Focus on content quality more than on PR and last but not the least follow Google Webmaster guidelines.

The Webtalks Effect
I'm not going to talk about traffic. Its about a single site wide link on my blog which linked to the domain(ashtech.info), I bought few months back. The result? Its now Pagerank 4.You can check, its not even indexed by Yahoo!

See how powerful my link is?

Keyword Targeting- Patience & Planning

My Blog offers some blogger templates. I had included a link back to this blog so that visitors can know from where the template has been downloaded. The good reason, the page had a good SERP rating so my templates are being used at many blogs. Some of them are having high PR's. A thought about keyword targeting struck my mind when I saw my blog reactions in Technorati.First, I included a link back to the template post with different keywords on different templates.I got the keywords from the Google results itself for "blogger templates" .

There are some other good sites targeting :"blogger templates" , to knock them of in the first page was quite a difficult task.So I started with smaller keywords like "new blogger templates" , "blogspot templates" & "3 column blogger templates".It took time for my post to get a decent ranking even with some 400 back links to the post itself.I also changes the default from "Download three column new blogger templates" to "New Blogger (XML) 3 column templates. The reason is here

Over the past few days, I have experienced a lot of Google Dancesmile_winkLast month I cracked into the first page result & mind you, it wasn't an easy task.2 weeks before this post got an ranking of #1 for term "new blogger templates".But the Google dance continued. We slipped from#1 to #2 and as I write this post, I saw it at the third place. But believe me, I have taken over some reall biggies like stopdesign.com {PR8} & blogger-templates.blogspot.com {PR6.Technorati Rank #4}.

As we all know Pagerank is continuously being changed and its only history that we see in the Google toolbar, does this give a hint where the template post would be in terms of PR? I am keeping my fingers crossed...

Make Money Online with Webtalks!

Not all blogs get some really good back links.I have included the keyword "Webtalks" for the homepage of the blog and I rank #1 for it{At some bad times, I slip to #2}.Webtalks itself makes no sense{if it does, I don't know what it is}I just wanted to keep the title easy. With the Blogger Title hack , I changed it to Webtalks-Blogging,Online Money Making,Tech tips. But that too was a waste. Now I'm thinking of the ever popular "Make Money Online" keyword. So in your next visit to this blog, don't be surprised to see the title "Make Money Online".Cool isn't it?

Points to be kept in mind while keyword targeting

If you get lots of links with the same keyword. You may rank better in Google.Because Yahoo & Live Search takes take domain age into consideration.
  • Don't Google Bomb.Be slow but efficient.
  • Google will also take some time to give you an appropriate rank.Till then, experience the Google Dance.
  • Before choosing a keyword, just go through Google Trends to find out whether the number of queries are enough
  • The title of the page dominates the SE ranking.
So which Keyword are you targeting?

Why Personal Blogging is a much better option

This week's twister.Tired of blogging for some bucks? why not try a personal blog. From my experience of personal blogging for 1 month, I'm feeling much excited blogging.Reasons?

You don't think what to write

Things just go by and you blog them.Unlike these professional money making blogs where you need to think with an evil mind and write a unique and top notch post.Quite stressful to your little mind.

Google.Who?

Why should I care about my search engine listings? Or bite nails how much pagerank I will get after the next export {if it ever happens smile_shades} .And now see, the condition of all "Pro" Bloggers, how they are sweating, running after each and every Google Data Center for just the slightest hint about their new pagerank after export.{which ill not happen this month for sure}

Wordpress or Blogger?

Why should I bother whether its is hosted on blogger or on wordpress?I just need a simple blogging software that lets me put my content in the web.And as the blogger of Webtalks , I constantly face the dilemma between Blogger and Wordpress

Dont feed your feeds

I don't care of my feed readers{of personal blog of course}  whether  they would be happy with the kind of posting frequency I'll be having on my blog. But here on Webtalks, I've kept some scheduled posts in draft so that your subscribing to this feed isn't worthless

Design? Optimization ? for what?

Since, I switched over to the current blog template, I've some 20 people shooting me emails from where did I get it and can they too have this one? Saw, people just try to copy your blog.Run after each other. As for my personal blog, Minima Black just suits it.Since it is a basic two column template , for the first time I have got a full valid CSS on w3org.And from my opinion it looks much better than Webtalks as it is adfree

But Can it make money online?

Yep.But first you need to develop it.and you must be knowing the John Chow dot com was initially started as a personal blog and used to enough traffic that will give round 300$'s in first month of monetizing by Adsense!

So how's your "personal" blog performing?

For my case, believe it or not, I've got some 30 RSS readers who just subscribed it using the common "Subscribe to Posts(Atom)" link.I haven't started monetizing it and have no plans to do so for until I really feel the need for it.
