Acer 1825PT And 1825PTZ Convertible Tablet

While tablet computers that have ditched the physical keyboard are the current fad, Acer still seems to have some faith in the traditional convertible tablet design, as can be seen with the company’s upcoming Acer Aspire 1825PT and 1825PTZ. Both laptops are more or less similar, but with slightly different specifications. While we don’t have pricing information just yet, details of the laptops include:

SayCool Multi-touch Tablet Is Powered By Windows XP

Most tablet’s going around now are powered by Windows 7 or Google’s Android OS, but the SayCool tablet seems intent to distance itself from the pack by opting for the operating system that Microsoft can’t seem to kill off - Windows XP. Windows 7 is obviously more touch-friendly than Windows XP, but there isn’t any mention of why the decision to go with Windows XP was made. The display is said to be a capacitive one, hinting that multi-touch capabilities are present, but to what extent was not elaborated. Could multi-touch only be supported on specific applications, or will it work with browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox etc? Aside from the operating system, the tablet itself should be pretty standard fare, sporting GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G. There isn’t any mention of whether the SayCool tablet will be making its way to the US, though.

Eston N97 MID runs on Android OS

Looks like the Android OS is gaining traction not only among notable hardware manufacturers, but those who walk on the clone side as well. Here we are with the Eston N97 Mobile Internet Device (MID) which was announced in November last year, where it comes with a trackball located right under the display, a pre-installed copy of the Android OS with the option to run Windows CE and Ubuntu as well, a 624MHZ Marvell PXA303 processor, a 7' touchscreen display at 800 x 480 resolution, Wi-Fi connectivity and a 2,800mAh battery that supposedly offers up to 4 hours of working time. Constrained Supplies Hint at MacBook Pro Refresh

Constrained supplies of MacBook Pros have analysts predicting a refresh to the line of notebook computers.

Analyst Shaw Wu with Kaufman Bros found that supplies of MacBook Pro machines are "fairly limited at two to three weeks vs. a more normal four to six weeks."

Wu believes that strong January demand could play a part; however, he believes that new MacBook Pros are on the horizon.

Apple is expected to upgrade to the new Intel Arrandale mobile processors which are now shipping in volume. Wu suggests Apple could use this update to further differentiate the low-end, $999 MacBook from the premium MacBook Pro.

"Benefits of the new mobile architecture, helped in part by its new 32 nanometer process (vs. previous 45 nanometer), include much better performance through hyper-threading and turbo mode, battery life, and weight characteristics, which we believe give AAPL engineers more room to further differentiate the MacBook Pro," Wu wrote in a note to investors Wednesday.

"We believe new Mac models could ship in the March quarter, or at the latest the June quarter. It is not clear to us whether AAPL will introduce these new Macs through special event or 'quietly' through a press release."

AppleInsider suggests that a new Nvidia technology called Optimus could make its way to the MacBook Pro. Optimus was designed to work alongside Nehalem notebook designs that have both an integrated Intel graphics processor and a discrete Nvidia graphics chip. It chooses the best of the two graphics processors for running a given application and automatically routes the workload to either the discrete Nvidia chip or Intel integrated graphics core. This provides the best performance while also providing optimal battery life.

Microsoft, HP, Dell, Sony, and Acer Ready Tablets

Computer makers are developing strategies and readying devices to compete with Apple's iPad, according to a WSJ report.

In the next few weeks, executives from Hewlett-Packard will meet to tweak prices and features on an upcoming tablet dubbed the Slate. It will be similar to the iPad in size and features but cost less.

After doing consumer research in 2008 that showed customers would buy Web-surfing gadgets with a five-inch screen, Dell began developing the Mini-5 which will go to market this year running Google Android.

Mike Abary, VP of Sony's Vaio PC division said, "For us, the iPad launch is a benchmark." Sony already sells touch-screen e-book readers that have limited Internet access and is considering what new devices to develop to compete with the iPad.

Acer is said to be developing products midway in size between a smart phone and a laptop, including an e-reader expected to release this year. Calling it a "tweener category that we're all trying to figure out", the company plans to introduce more iPad like devices in the future.

Microsoft has a group of designers working in a company incubation laboratory in Seattle called Alchemy Ventures. Recently their work on a two-screen tablet, code-named Courier, was leaked online.

iWonder $100 Tablet Powered by Marvell

iWonder $100 Tablet Powered by Marvell

iWonder $100 Tablet Powered by Marvell

[MWC 2010 Mobile Focus] Foxconn, a powerful Taiwanese contract manufacturer, is set to debut a $100 Android tablet in China. Of course, $100 is incredibly cheap and at that price you can’t expect to have a build quality comparable to an iPad: The device is made of cheap plastic, and the 800x600 (I’m eyeballing here) display is a little fuzzy, but it runs Android apps. I was not able to test the web browsing because there was no internet connection, so I would stay cautious until I can actually see at least what browsing looks like. That said, for $100, it’s so cheap that some would just buy one to see how it’s like. The Tablet was demonstrated by Marvell, the company behind the Tablet’s processor. My take is that if someone can turn this into a fancy remote, I might pay for that.
