Rookies are always tough to gauge in fantasy, mainly because our only source of reference is either high school ball or college ball, and draft pick. Personally I tend to avoid rookies in drafting because you just don’t know what you’re gonna get. I passed on Jennings, Griffin, Evans, all of them. Instead I go for sophomores like Beasley. While having a rookie that never does anything is bad, having one that does well can almost be worse because you can’t get a true gauge on where his ceiling is. Is he supposed to perform this well? Will he continue to perform this well? This all brings me to the current likely Rookie of The Year candidate, Tyreke Evans, and my advice of SELL SELL SELL. Normally at this point I would compare his numbers to those of his career, but for rookies we can’t do that. Instead, we can compare Mr. Evans to the ROY seasons put together by the last two recipients, Derrick Rose and Kevin Durant. One look at these stats and you’ll agree, the time to sell Evans is now.
Sell High – Tyreke Evans – G – Sacramento Kings
First we look at Tyreke’s current averages on the season:
Tyreke Evans
PTS – 20.3
AST – 5.0
REB – 5.1
3’s – 0.5
STL – 1.5
BLK – 0.4
TO’s – 2.9
FG% - 47.2
FT% - 77.9
Those are some pretty solid stats right there. He’s definitely posting well above average stats for his position. But how is he compared to prior ROY candidates? First, look at Derrick Rose’s ROY campaign from last year:
Derrick Rose
PTS – 16.8
AST – 6.3
REB – 3.9
3’s – 0.2
STL – 0.8
BLK – 0.2
TO’s – 2.5
FG% - 47.5
FT% - 78.8
Evans averages 3.5 more points per game, 1.3 assists less, 1.2 boards more and has Rose beat in treys, steals and blocks too! From the looks of this, right now Tyreke Evans is playing slightly above where Derrick Rose had played when he won the honor. But wait, was Derrick Rose really that good as a rookie? Well, if you need another example, let’s take our latest phenom player Kevin Durant. Here are his ROY numbers from two years ago:
Kevin Durant
PTS – 20.3
AST – 2.4
REB – 4.4
3’s – 0.7
STL – 1.0
BLK – 0.9
TO’s – 2.9
FG% - 43
FT% - 87.3
Again, it appears pretty obvious that Evans is currently having a better season than even Kevin Durant did during his ROY campaign. Now for those of you who think Reke is the next LeBron James or something stupid, fine, hold onto him. But for those of you smart enough to cash this puppy in and try to land players like Jason Richardson or Rajon Rondo, or Rashard Lewis or even Gilbert Arenas, listen up. Two things I want to leave you with when thinking about Mr. Evans and his current Sell High status.
Rookies are almost always good for only half the season, and usually it’s the first half. They’ve never played a season this long before and they get tired. It’s a lot of running, it’s twice the length of the college season (almost) and they’re still young. I fully expect Reke’s numbers to slow down from here on out. But even if they don’t, it is HIGHLY unlikely they will get better.
Kevin Martin is coming back in January. Kevin averages over 20 points a game, those points are going to eat into Reke’s production, guaranteed. It would be stupid to wait for Kevin to come back, eat into the production and THEN try to deal Reke.
So, what are you waiting for? If you own this guy (and I know a lot of you do), start working on some deals!

i now i just got a sell high in pierce, but i believe that i bought him pretty cheap, so who should i trade him for?
Well with Chauncey down, I'd say work pierce for Nash or Deron or cp3. But dood, you've built a top notch squad there!
ReplyDeleteCopied from the other board:
ReplyDeleteThief! Check out my sickkk Sauce numbers if all my trades go through for my top 10 guys (It's a special 12-team, 5 starter 8 bench format) So I figured showing top 10 (2 players per position) gives a fair reading on what positions are covered for each:
PG: Nash/Kidd
SG: Wade/JRich
SF: Pierce/Josh Smith
PF: Jamison/Frye
C: Bosh/Nene
Pts: 17.37
Rebs: 6.58
Asts: 4.27
3s: 1.28
Stl: 1.13
Blks: 0.87
Which are all above your numbers. In the trade, my pts dropped from 18.5+ to 17.37 but there was a key increase in asts, 3s, and blocks.
The other 3 people part of my bench would then also be: Jack, Dunleavy and McGrady which I think are very suitable backups in this 5starter league. Dunleavy's play has picked up a lot as of late, Jack's value will dip slightly with Calderon, but he'll put up consistent numbers and hopefully McGrady puts up one good night and I'll be able to sell high quickly ;-)
Oh, and I'm thinking who should I should try to target in a small 2v1 trade. Thinking of trying to send Frye and McGrady for Ginobli, or Salmons. This would allow me to pick up Speights or Lawson. Any ideas?
So I assume Jennings goes in the same category.
ReplyDeleteBack to trying to get Howard (as you said, and i do trust you) and Deron Williams
I offered: Beasley, Granger, Harris
I get: Howard, Williams
should I substitute either harris or beasley with jennings?
Pavel, perfect offer bro, perfect
ReplyDeleteYo, havent talked in a little bit (probably since I've been dominating)
ReplyDeleteI just got this offer tho:
I get: cp3, lamarcus aldridge
for: granger, gwallace, luis scola
Hot Sauce:
pts: 16.92
3's: 1.03
REbs: 7.5
Asts: 3.49
St: 1.29
Blks: .79
My team
Starters:
Jameer Nelson
Devin Harris
Russel Westbrook
Danny Granger
Trevor Ariza
Gerald Wallace
Pau Gasol
Brook Lopez
Luis Scola
Kevin Love
Bench:
Johnny Flynn
Courtney Lee
Mike Dunleavy
Lou Williams
Brendan Haywood
Give me your prognosis, doctor
Dood I'd def do it, ESP with grangers shady injury. Ink it bro!
ReplyDeleteHey Thief.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking of doing whatever I could to get granger but is it not worth it because of the injury?
At first I was thinking Pierce+Parker for granger but noone seems to want either Pierce OR Parker in my league...
Is it too risky for me to offer either BRoy or Rudy Gay for Granger?
I am avoiding Granger, I don't like the injury. If that changes, I'll def sound the alarm, but I'm staying away.
ReplyDeleteHello Thief, its been enjoyable reading your blog and I would like some help with my team.
ReplyDeleteIt is a 12 team H2H league 8 cat
My 10 starters are:
Gilbert Arenas
Joe Johnson
Kevin Durant
Troy Murphy
Al Jefferson
Elton Brand
Brendan Haywood
Larry Hughes
Mario Chalmers
Jermaine O'Neal
These are my sauce numbers:
PTS - 15.76
ASSISTS - 3.11
STEALS - 1.15
REBOUNDS - 6.61
BLKS - 0.84
3'S - 0.82
I think i might need more points, assists and 3s compared to the avgs. u gave, but I do not want to give up too much on cats in which I am barely over the avgs.
I would like to attempt to trade for CP3 or a top tier PG because all I have now is Gilbert who I traded Channing Frye and Jameer Nelson for a few days ago.
Who would be good for me to offer to get a top PG? Also, I offered Durant for CP3 before but the other owner rejected it.
Once again, thanks for your blog!

ReplyDeleteHey Thief, I just checked out your secret sauce blog. How do we adjust it for a 14 team league?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Read my latest post, designed to fix just that!
ReplyDeleteMatt, you don't need to. It's all relative. We'll be able to tell what u need as is.
ReplyDelete?
ReplyDeleteOh Danny, missed ya bro. Yeah u need help! I'd deal Garnett n jones, go for aldridge or Amare n try to get another tier 3 thrown in like D Rose or Monta Ellis or something. U got CP3, but you need depth. We gotta cash in some players to do that.
