I know I’ve said this before but I’m going to say it again, of all the categories in fantasy basketball, none is more valuable to me than assists. Fact is, there are only so many point guards in the NBA, and not all of them are valuable distributors. It’s likely that everyone out there has a solid point guard on their team, but that might not be enough to put you in a competitive position. So, let’s flush out the cheapest source of solid assists we can find right now. Allow me to introduce Assist Specialist Chris Duhon.
Chris Duhon has been a marginal player in the NBA. Coming into this season, with Mike D’Antoni running the Knicks, speculation was high that Duhon would mesh very well and have a break out year. Hasn’t really happened yet, though do note his last three games have been very good. Still, Duhon’s current rank is pretty high and most managers starting him aren’t exactly wedded to the idea. Let’s take a look at the numbers and see where he helps, where he hurts and what is a wash.
Chris Duhon
CAT 2009
PTS 9.1
REB 3.0
AST 6.3
3’s 1.6
STL 1.1
BLK 0.0
TO 1.7
FG 34.7!!
FT 76.5
If those assist numbers don’t stand out for you, they should. 6.3 assists per game, which is down a little from his 7.2 last year, is nothing to shake a stick at. This guy can be the difference between being Under Sauce and being well Over Sauce. Now glance over the rest of the stat line, ugh I know. But you have to look at this guy in conjunction with your whole team. Are you pretty solid in rebounds? Will Duhon replace someone with similar Rebound numbers? If so, there are no worries here. How about Points, same thing? In fact, those are the two categories where you’ll take the biggest tradeoff. For many of you in need of assists, this is not a problem since Points and Boards are easy to come by. Looks like he’ll boost your three pointers a little, same with steals. Ignore the FG and FT%’s, while these are low he doesn’t actually shoot enough to make an impact. The advantage is boosting your dimes pretty big.
I really wish I had posted this a week ago, because Duhon’s last three games have definitely made owners notice. Still, he’s had a rough year shooting and the price of a guy like this is very low. Take a look at the owner’s team, does he have any deficiencies? Whether actual ones or just ones you convince them they have? Is he weak in steals, I could see a Duhon for Courtney Lee trade being very easy to move. A guy like this sits in the last spot on your starting roster, hurts you a little in two categories, helps you a little in two categories, and is a non event in all others save for assists, where the benefit is impressive.
So the next time you run your Sauce numbers, and notice that you are strong in Points and Rebounds but low in Dimes and Treys, rather than concocting a huge deal for Chris Paul with a stubborn manager that keeps giving you the cold shoulder, take a look at ole Chris Duhon. He’s cheap and he can round out your team just where you need it most.

i'm in talks to aquire nash for durant straight up. i'm one of those owners that easily falls for thier team, this is a easy call right?
Merger, any reason its Nash? I'd try for CP3, then DWill, then Nashty. But I love that move of durant for one of them, gets right at what u need with assists n treys. If it's Nash or DWill, try to get more than a 1-1.
ReplyDeleteas luck would have it, this owner also happens to own cp3 and is unwilling to part with him. not that dwill is a pushover but nash is on another planet right now and ultimately i feel the 3's will round out the trade better for me...
ReplyDeleteI agree about the treys, no doubt. Just so you know, Durant should command a wee bit more than just Nashty (but in the end, if he forces a 1-1, INK IT)
ReplyDeleteHi there, Thief :)
ReplyDeleteI've been reading your posts with great interest and most of what you write makes a lot of sense.
One thing I can't quite agree with is your opinion of rookies and especially Tyreke Evans. I watched several Kings games and I was really impressed with Reke. If he can only learn to shoot his jumper better (and that's achievable), why would it be so "stupid" to think he could be (almost) the next LeBron in a couple of years time? Even now he is great for a rookie and I can see nothing strange or wrong with him having a better rookie season than Durant. :P The only thing that worries me as a Reke owner is the impact of Kevin Martin's return, but I believe the kid is smart and will at least compensate the lesser number of shots with more assists... and why not even some offensive rebounds (he is a great rebounding guard and I think he will still be, even when he plays the point more)...
As for Emeka Okafor, I liked your analysis very much and I totally agree that he's going to have a much better overall season than his current stats suggest. I would try and trade for him, but I can't figure out who to offer from my roster:
(it's a 10 team roto league)
PG - Jason Kidd
SG - Tyreke Evans
G - Derrick Rose
SF - LeBron James
PF - Kevin Love
F - J.R. Smith
C - Nene Hilario
C - Marc Gasol
Util - Brandon Jennings
Util - Jeff Green
BN - Mike Dunleavy
BN - Danilo Gallinari
BN - Anthony Morrow
Have in mind that I rotate my entire roster all the time, as the fact I'll run out of games much earlier doesn't worry me at all - I am much more worried that I might miss out on that random multiple-trey game Smith, Dunleavy, Gallinari and Morrow are capable of... LOL, with Gallinari it's not even random, it's supposed to happen from time to time, while J.R. had a hot spell of 7-, 8- and even a 11-trey game (!) last season and I'm waiting for something similar at some point this season too. Even the latter three of those (who I am sure you will say are "crap" :P) play regularly with me, so they are not really "BN", cause I can't afford to bench them exactly BECAUSE of their inconsistency.
As you can guess, I am also not too eager to give up any of those SG/SF's (except Dunleavy who I plan of selling high in the future, but am waiting for his trade value - i.e. pt-average - to get even higher, coming back from the injury and playing more and more minutes). So the only one I can think of offering for Okafor is one of my only two centers - same good old Nene... But I might be giving up too much there... Any suggestions?
(I've already shown you my Sauce #s a couple of days ago and it mustn't have changed too much, so I'm copying and pasting them here again.)
Averages for all 13 players:
Points: 15.89
Assists: 3.78
Boards: 5.79
Treys: 1.29
Steals: 1.17
Blocks: 0.62
i can see it coming "dude nash is tearin it up right now, it's nash or nothing." how should i combat this obvious knee jerk reaction? also, is it time to drop b.diaw for say, birdman?
ReplyDeleteChristo, lol, you LOVE Reke! I think jr smith for okafor is best. You won't miss his treys, so says the sauce!
ReplyDeleteKeefer, at the end of the day, if it's Nash an he meshes with the sauce, you'll be happy!
So you think trading Nene for Okafor is giving up WAY TOO much? Well, I guess I think so too, but I am just being impatient and eager to get Okafor, as you really got me hooked on him with that nice post of yours...LOL
ReplyDeletePatience christo, PATIENCE!!
ReplyDeleteLOL, yeah, I know! That's why I'm being patient with that jerk J.R. as well. Last season I had him too and I wasn't patient - I got fed up with a bunch of poor performances and, believe it or not, I just cut him outright - dropped him and let him go to FA, where later someone picked him up and the rest is history (i.e. J.R. did what he did, as I reminded you with the link above here)... I think that was one of the main reasons I lost my chances for a Top 3 in my rookie fantasy season, I really wanted to EAT MY EARS (as we say her in Bulgaria LOL) in frustration...
ReplyDeleteChristo, you're from Bulgaria, that's friggin awesome (as we say here in the US)
ReplyDeleteHi, I would like to know what do you think about this trade: Kevin Durant and Jason Kidd for Chris Paul.

A Jefferson
J Kidd
S.Marion
L.Odom
J.Noah
C.Duhon
P.Stojakovic
D.Granger
Jose, it's OK. I mean I love you getting CP3 so don't get me wrong, but I'd like to see you replace the extra slot with a three point shooter. Do that and you're coming out of the deal better than the way you went in!
ReplyDeleteSauce, i follow you advice and i pick Anthony Morrow. Also i trade Stojakovic for Okur, so now my team stands like this:
ReplyDeleteS.Nash
K durant
J Salmons
D West
A Jefferson
J Kidd
S.Marion
L.Odom
J.Noah
C.Duhon
M.Okur
A Morrow
D.Granger
My Sauce:
points: 15.05

steals:1.06
asist:4.01
reb:6.73
Do you think i should be fine until Granger returns, or i have to do another move?
sorry i forgot my 3 point:0.83
ReplyDeleteJose, try to move Granger for Troy Murphy or Andrea Bargnani. Maybe do a 2-2 and add in morrow and ask for a decent player in return. Granger doesnt look good bro. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI know that replacing granger for other player would be a great idea. I try that to get carmelo, but the person wants this trade take a look: D West, J Noah, C Duhon for Carmelo.
