The Best Way to Play Fantasy Sports

I realize that we are already well underway into the season, so the timeliness of this post isn’t exactly perfect, but it’s important nonetheless. As you all know I’ve been a commissioner for a competitive league for over a decade now. During that time I’ve had the opportunity to fiddle with different setup types to try and determine which ones are the best for promoting fun and competition. I’d like to touch on a few points that I think will go a long way toward making your league better, and making sure my readers have the full advantage they should get from this blog. If you are currently a commissioner, I highly recommend these changes next season. If you aren’t currently a commissioner, then I suggest appealing to your commissioner to implement these next season.

1. Don’t Only Play in a Public League

Public leagues are good for one thing and one thing only, getting into a fantasy sport that you have never played before. The very first baseball league I ever played in was a public league, and the only hockey league I’ve ever played in was a public league. People generally join these leagues either to learn how to play or to have a second or third fantasy team going. Thus, the members of these leagues are generally less competitive, pay less attention to their squads, and have little or no interest in trading with you. There is little action on the message boards, and establishing trade relations is nearly impossible. I highly suggest going forward that you try to join a private league. If you don’t have enough friends to put one together, the forums on both yahoo and ESPN constantly have people who post looking for extra members.

And just to make it even easier, I’ve created my own Post Board in the right hand column of the page where you are free to post either looking for members or looking for a league. Don’t be shy either. -------------look here!----------------->

2. The Dumbest Rule in Fantasy Sports

Remember that public baseball league I was talking about. Yeah well coming into the final months of the season I was solidly in second place and making my move toward first. However my Shortstop had just gotten injured and I had no backup. Luckily, I had an extra first baseman and so I hit the trade wires. I ended up working with a team in 7th place and getting him to deal me Nomar (who was good then) for my first baseman. It was about as even of a deal as you could want. My trade got vetoed. Why? Because the league knew that if I had this SS, I’d have a shot at competing for first, without him and I was screwed. They didn’t vote n the validity of the trade, they voted on where my position in the league was.

Trades should be vetoed for one reason and one reason only, collusion. It is never acceptable to have two managers collude in trades to try and stack one team. It is up to a commissioner to know if people are doing that, and stop the deal if it happens. However taking advantage of someone’s stupidity is part of this game. Trades shouldn’t be vetoed because the league members know better than the managers making the deal. Many times I’ve witnessed deals that looked lopsided, but ended up being the opposite in the end. Hopefully as a commissioner you have managers who aren’t completely stupid, so there’s no LeBron for Tracy McGardy deals. But in the end, ONLY the commissioner should decide if a trade is OK or if it should be vetoed. This decision should ONLY be based on the presence of collusion.

3. The Auction Draft

Hands down the best way to draft is via auction. If you’ve done it before, sound off in the comments section cause I know you loved it. If you haven’t done it before, I guarantee if you do it once you’ll never look back. It is the MOST fun and MOST fair way to draft. Everyone starts off in the same position, no random first draft pick guy getting CP3, that’s stupid and unfair. I’m sure this is ever more obvious now with my last post. As a side benefit, Keepers are much easier to do with an auction draft, but more on that some other time. I mentioned this before, I’ll say it again, I know yahoo doesn’t offer Auction drafting yet (which hopefully they fix soon) but I know ESPN does, and they offer it for free. So each season my league drafts on ESPN, and then I input the players into yahoo (goes much faster than you think) and we play there.

These three simple tips will help make sure you get the most out of your fantasy experience. The rest of the customizations are really up to you, but I’ll add in that I usually don’t add in stat categories, and only modify roster sizes based on league size (bigger league = smaller roster). Hope you found this useful!

  2. Another great post! I got some offer for Steph Curry in my league that I could use some advice on. I'm trying to rebuild my team so i am strictly trading for best value.

Trade 1: Give Curry for Jeff Green
Trade 2: Give Curry, Ridnour for J.Green and Dunleavy
Trade 3: Give T.Murphy, Dampier for Z.Randolph, Hughes/Bibby(one of them)

Either of these trades make sense for me value wise?

  3. I know that you are an expert in the big 3 fantasy sports: basketball, baseball, and football. Do you have a blog like this for both of those? or is this blog something that you just recently started? Your advice in other sports would be amazing (fantasy football playoffs anyone?) Thanks!

  4. Anony, just one makes sense, curry for green. I'd lock that up immediately.

  5. Dude I totally agree with each and every one of your points. I'm tired of trades getting vetoed because people think you're making your team better. One person even accused me of cheating and taking advantage of another person because I got him to do a trade that was benefitting me and got everyone else to veto.

And I hear ya on auction drafts man! Best way to go, and they are kinda fun :P

Quick question. Should I try to ship Udrih for Jarrett Jack (I know you hate Udrih)

    ReplyDelete
  6. LlI'll do all three here. I'm in two football leagues, in the semifinals in both. I started with basketball cause football trade deadline is gone. You need football advice, ask away. BUT at this point in the season, your team should b pretty set.

  7. Simple one, Josh Smith or Amare Stoudemire???

  8. What about Curry, Murphy, Dampier for Z.Randolph, Bibby/Hughes(one), and Ariza? Or is the Green-Curry deal still the best route?

  18. Had literally just changed the league vote to commisioner vote and stated that trades would only be vetoed based on collusion. And that everyone should do their due diligence before accepting a trade.

    Great points Thief!

Pavel, Illyasova? Seriously? Dood it's illyasova, get a grip!!

I'm in need of some help with my team. I have a few questions but will start with the most important.

I'm in a keeper league (Keep 3 at the end) and am a little frustrated with Wade's production compared to last year! Durant's owner needs a PG, and I think I have an opportunity to possibly swapping Wade for his Durant. Whats your thoughts on this move?

    Thanks!

  33. Oh, and also - on a future trade I'm thinking of proposing: I would try to get Bargnani for Nene, who you've listed as a "sell high" (although the other guy is likely to snub me, as he seems to be in love with Bargnani and will probably not even realize that Nene has been doing far better than him so far this season).

  37. Aaron, definitely not. For a tier one player, ok. But for a tier two, nope.

Introspect, what up! I'm indifferent btwn durant n Wade, but keep in mind Wade could be playing alongside another superstar next year, like Bosh. I say do it, but then who's your SG?

Anony, read the Secret Sauce post, then run your numbers, then we can evaluate that deal.

Andrew, both sites offer snake drafts, where you just pick a player when it's your turn. Espn offers auction style too where everyone starts out with equal purse money, and players are bid on 1 by 1 like in an auction.

Pavel, your no bother bro. If you're gonna get LBJ you can toss in my mother to ink the deal. Whatever it takes.

Carlo, whatever it takes bub, go get him. To be sure, run your before/after secret sauce numbers.

Christo, sorry do not like the first trade, you gave up too much. The second could be good but to be sure you need to read my Secret Sauce post an run your sauce numbers. It will help us evaluate your squad an trade better.

Bandoogie! You know the game bro, I need your sauce numbers. It looks like a good deal if u need treys an can give up steals.

Don, that's a good squad buddy, nice job! You're a wee heavy on boards n light on points. However it's not much. Try trading up. Something like Baron Davis an Al horford for deron Williams an plug in one of ur bench centers. But really, you got a well balanced team bro.

    Thanks for reading guys!

  38. Hey Thief. Ran my Sauce numbers with the following starting lineup after making the trade for B.Gordon and Salmons and dropping Morrow for Lou Will.

    Rondo
    Wade
    Roy
    Iguodala
    Nowitzki
    Garnett
    Lopez
    Brand
    L.Williams
    B.Gordon

    Bench: Salmons, Deng, Pryzbilla

The boards are a tad low but that's without either of Deng or Pryz in my lineup. What do you think thief. Is this a team I can finally stay put with for a while?

  51. Anony, I'm happy to help but I need you to do two things. First subscribe to the blog, and second read the secret sauce post. It'll help you an I both evaluate your team.

Intro, in roto a bench spot is a place where you leave a guy like salmons who is slumping and hold him til he gets hot. His value is very low right now. Round here, we buy players low like salmons and sell players high like camby. The opposite is a recipe for losing!

    ReplyDelete
  52. appreciate that input! Your right. I do want to hold on to Salmons and don't mind benching him but also I know he is wanted by some owners as well! I'm trying to find a way to move Marion+Udrih. Maybe I need to work really micro and try to move Marion strait up for someone like JR Smith (if possible)! thanks for the feedback

    ReplyDelete
  53. OK, man. Here is not only one, but two different estimates of Secret Sauce #s of my team.

This one is done according to the team average in each category UNTIL NOW (I divide the total value in the category by the total number of games played), through 286 games:

    Points: 15.34
    Assists: 3.91
    Boards: 5.74
    Treys: 1.02
    Steals: 1.14
    Blocks: .62

The second one is the Sauce calculated the way that YOU have explained it in your "Secret Sauce" post - according to the average stats of the CURRENT players I have. Comparing the two will show you how my team has changed, including due to that "Pierce + Ilyasova for Jennings + Green trade", but also due to quite a few adds/drops I've done along the way:

    Points: 15.89
    Assists: 3.78
    Boards: 5.79
    Treys: 1.29
    Steals: 1.17
    Blocks: .62

I've also estimated what I give up and what I gain, when doing a trade: in each given category I compare the sum of the averages of the two players I trade to the sum of those that arrive. Here it is for the trade where you said I gave up too much:

    (Pierce + Ilyasova / Jennings + Green)

    FG % - give up .092
    Points - gain 5.70
    Assists - gain 2.10
    Boards - give up 2.00
    Treys - gain 0.60
    Steals - gain 0.50
    Blocks - gain 0.30

(excluded FT%, as I seemed to give up a bit in that one, but both Jennings and Green have significantly increased their FT%s since then)

And here it is for the "Bargnani/Nene" trade (even simpler, since it's "1/1" - I just subtract one from the other):

    FG % - give up .112
    FT% - gain .131
    Points - gain 3.10
    Assists - give up 1.40
    Boards - give up 2.40
    Treys - gain 1.40
    Steals - give up 1.30
    Blocks - no change (0.00)

As you can see, I give up quite a lot, if that trade goes through and both players continue performing the way they've done so far (as I said, Nene has been doing far better than Bargnani SO FAR this season). But in this case I'm following your lines of thinking - that Nene's form is going to drop, while Bargnani will not change much (or, hopefully, will even improve a bit).

    What do you think? :)

  54. Wow top notch analysis playa, that's how u do it. Yeah as u see the trade I suggested helps in areas u were weaker, wheras yours makes u weaker there and stronger where you're strong. In the end it's your call.

  55. I'm a little confused on how to produce the sauce numbers. Am I supposed to take the totals of each player for last week, add them up and then divide by total number of games played last week? Thanks.

  56. Sorry for the confusion. The School Time posts explains how to do the calcs. It's easier than what you said.

  57. No prob man, there's a list of all the posts on the rightj hand side of any page

  58. Yeah, you are right - the trade I did a couple of weeks ago does make me a bit weaker where I was already weak and even stronger where I was already strong. But It was a great opportunity to ship Pierce, while his FG% was still WAY too high - over .500 (!). I was also hoping Jennings's won't keep going down at the same rate + he would continue to take lots of shots (= give me lots of points). I guess for now it's working... but I'm worried how Redd's return will affect Jennings's usage :S

I am also counting on Green being more established in his team and a bit more consistent and reliable than Ilyasova (although it seems Ilyasova is in great form and is getting better and better even after I traded him)...

As for the future trade I'm planning to offer, I was mostly curious about what you think of Bargnani's prospects of keeping his pace up (since I already know you think Nene is going to slump).

And thanks again for the great blog and your comments, you are being really helpful :)

  59. Hey Thief this is James but now I'm logged in so you will see me as rwats now. I am considering one last move and that is to pick up Dunleavy. Anybody on my team worth dropping? My first target is Pryz.

    Rondo
    Wade
    Roy
    Iggy
    Nowitzki
    Garnett
    B.Lopez
    Brand
    B.Gordon
    John Salmons
    Lou Williams
    Pryzbilla
    Deng

There is no interest around the league for Pryz. I did my sauce calcs with him out of the lineup and my boards and blocks were still above the domination line. lol. What do you think? Should Pryz get the drop?

  60. Christo, always follow your gut.

James, sounds like the right choice to me!

  61. rwats, if you allow me to voice my opinion too, since I am around here anyway - of course you should drop the Vanilla Gorilla! LOL Considering all you said and looking at the rest of your roster, he is the only one worth dropping... But you should have snapped up Mike Jr BEFORE he had those 50 points in 2 games (I did) ;)
