iPad Demand Exceeds Pre-launch iPhone Demand

A new survey suggests pre-launch demand for the iPad is greater than that of the iPhone before it first launched.

AppleInsider reports on a RBC/ChangeWave survey which found that 13 percent of respondants are likely to buy Apple's forthcoming iPad, a number greater than the 9 percent who planned to buy an iPhone before its launch.

RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky said the responses from 3,200 participants show strong pent-up consumer demand for the iPad.

In 2007, 28 percent of respondents said the iPhone was too expensive, only 8 percent in 2010 said they would not buy the iPad based on its price. While 19 percent said they are interested in the $499, 16GB model, another 19 percent said they would opt for the high-end, $829, 64GB model with 3G.

Of those surveyed, 68 percent said they would surf the Internet with the iPad, 44 percent would check e-mail, and 37 percent are interested in reading e-books.

The survey found that the iPad could affect sales of other Mac products. 25 percent of respondents said they will delay planned Apple purchases because of the device. MacBook purchases will be delayed by 9 percent of respondents, while 10 percent of prospective iPhone buyers will postpone their purchase.

"This data, while preliminary, suggests iPad may have greater potential than expected, to expand Apple's addressable PC, iPod markets and to capture a segment of the home PC market," Abramsky wrote.

Special Version of RedSn0w for Older iPod touch 2G

The iPhone Dev-Team has compiled a special version of redsn0w meant for those with the older (non-MC) iPod touch 2G.

If you have an iPod touch 2G whose serial number begins with “MC” you would fall into this category. Remember that you are currently restricted to “tethered” rebooting. That means you need to connect your device to a computer to complete the boot after a reset. Also, these devices cannot have custom logos.

The Dev-Team warns not to try this version if you have a newer iPod Touch 2G or if you’re not completely sure what version you have. And of course don’t try it for 3GS or ipt3G either.

You can find the download links below...

Apple Officially Announces the iPad

Apple today introduced iPad, a revolutionary device for browsing the web, reading and sending email, enjoying photos, watching videos, listening to music, playing games, reading e-books and much more. iPad’s responsive high-resolution Multi-Touch display lets users physically interact with applications and content. iPad is just 0.5 inches thick and weighs just 1.5 pounds— thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook. iPad includes 12 new innovative apps designed especially for the iPad, and will run almost all of the over 140,000 apps in the App Store. iPad will be available in late March starting at the breakthrough price of just $499.

“iPad is our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “iPad creates and defines an entirely new category of devices that will connect users with their apps and content in a much more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before.”

iPad features 12 next-generation Multi-Touch applications. Every app works in both portrait and landscape, automatically animating between views as the user rotates iPad in any direction. The precise Multi-Touch interface makes surfing the web on iPad an entirely new experience, dramatically more interactive and intimate than on a computer. Reading and sending email is fun and easy on iPad’s large screen and almost full-size “soft” keyboard. Import photos from a Mac®, PC or digital camera, see them organized as albums, and enjoy and share them using iPad’s elegant slideshows. Watch movies, TV shows and YouTube, all in HD or flip through pages of an e-book you downloaded from Apple’s new iBookstore while listening to your music collection.

iPad runs almost all of the over 140,000 apps on the App Store, including apps already purchased for your iPhone or iPod touch. The iTunes Store gives you access to the world’s most popular online music, TV and movie store with a catalog of over 11 million songs, over 50,000 TV episodes and over 8,000 films including over 2,000 in stunning high definition video. Apple also announced the new iBooks app for iPad, which includes Apple’s new iBookstore, the best way to browse, buy and read books on a mobile device. The iBookstore will feature books from major and independent publishers.

Apple also introduced a new version of iWork for iPad, the first desktop-class productivity suite designed specifically for Multi-Touch. With Pages, Keynote and Numbers you can create beautifully formatted documents, stunning presentations with animations and transitions, and spreadsheets with charts, functions and formulas. The three apps will be available separately through the App Store for $9.99 each.

iPad syncs with iTunes just like the iPhone and iPod touch, using the standard Apple 30-pin to USB cable, so you can sync all of your contacts, photos, music, movies, TV shows, applications and more from your Mac or PC. All the apps and content you download on iPad from the App Store, iTunes Store and iBookstore will be automatically synced to your iTunes library the next time you connect with your computer.

iPad’s brilliant 9.7-inch, LED-backlit display features IPS technology to deliver crisp, clear images and consistent color with an ultra-wide 178 degree viewing angle. The highly precise, capacitive Multi-Touch display is amazingly accurate and responsive whether scrolling web pages or playing games. The intelligent soft keyboard pioneered on iPhone takes advantage of iPad’s larger display to offer an almost full-size soft keyboard. iPad also connects to the new iPad Keyboard Dock with a full-size traditional keyboard.

iPad is powered by A4, Apple’s next-generation system-on-a-chip. Designed by Apple, the new A4 chip provides exceptional processor and graphics performance along with long battery life of up to 10 hours.* Apple’s advanced chemistry and Adaptive Charging technology deliver up to 1,000 charge cycles without a significant decrease in battery capacity over a typical five year lifespan.

iPad comes in two versions—one with Wi-Fi and the other with both Wi-Fi and 3G. iPad includes the latest 802.11n Wi-Fi, and the 3G versions support speeds up to 7.2 Mbps on HSDPA networks. Apple and AT&T announced breakthrough 3G pre-paid data plans for iPad with easy, on-device activation and management.

Continuing Apple’s dedication to designing and creating environmentally responsible products, each iPad enclosure is made of highly recyclable aluminum and comes standard with energy-efficient LED-backlit displays that are mercury-free and made with arsenic-free glass. iPad contains no brominated flame retardants and is completely PVC-free.

Apple today released a new Software Development Kit (SDK) for iPad, so developers can create amazing new applications designed to take advantage of iPad’s capabilities. The SDK includes a simulator that lets developers test and debug their iPad apps on a Mac, and also lets developers create Universal Applications that run on iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.

Pricing & Availability

iPad will be available in late March worldwide for a suggested retail price of $499 (US) for the 16GB model, $599 (US) for the 32GB model, $699 (US) for the 64GB model. The Wi-Fi + 3G models of iPad will be available in April in the US and selected countries for a suggested retail price of $629 (US) for the 16GB model, $729 (US) for the 32GB model and $829 (US) for the 64GB model. iPad will be sold in the US through the Apple Store (www.apple.com), Apple’s retail stores and select Apple Authorized Resellers. International pricing and worldwide availability will be announced at a later date. iBookstore will be available in the US at launch.

Court: iPod hearing loss your fault, not Apple's

'What? What??'

A US court has turned back an appeal of a 2008 ruling that declared that if you blow out your ears by listening to your iPod too loudly, it's your own damn fault.

In a victory for common sense and personal responsibility, the court sided with the iPod manufacturer in the case of Birdsong v. Apple, Inc, originally filed in the Western District of Louisiana by one Joseph Birdsong, who was later joined by Californian Bruce Waggoner.

Both plaintiffs sought to elevate the case to nationwide class-action status. Instead, the US District Court of Northern California, to which the case had been transferred, dismissed their complaint. Birdsong and Waggoner appealed.

In Wednesday's ruling (PDF), Judge David R. Thompson of the Ninth Circuit notes that: "The plaintiffs argue the district court erred... They alleged that the iPod (1) comes with 'stock ear buds...designed to be placed deep into the ear canal rather than over the ears, which increases the danger of hearing damage,' (2) lacks 'noise isolating or cancelling properties,' and (3) lacks any volume meter."

Ignoring the mischaracterization of iPod earbuds as being "designed to be placed deep into the ear canal," Judge Thompson's ruling gets right to the point: "The district court did not err."

Thompson's reasoning is straightforward: "The plaintiffs recognize that iPods play music, have an adjustable volume, and transmit sound through earbuds," he writes, adding that their complaint states that - and the italics are Judge Thompson's: "(1) the iPod is capable of playing 115 decibels of sound; (2) consumers may listen at unsafe levels; and (3) iPod batteries can last 12 to 14 hours and are rechargeable, giving users the opportunity to listen for long periods of time."

Summing up his argument, Thompson writes: "Taken as true, such statements suggest only that users have the option of using an iPod in a risky manner..."

In other words, the law isn't responsible for stopping an idiot from being an idiot.

Thompson goes on to write that "the plaintiffs make no allegations of any history of malfunction, but merely suggest possible changes to the iPod which they believe would make the product safer," such as noise-reducing earbuds, warnings beyond the Apple's existing 60-word Avoid Hearing Damage tips, a digital decibel meter, and "volume-control software" - whatever that might entail.

"The plaintiffs fail to allege, however, how the absence of their suggested changes caused any user an injury," Thompson writes,

In fact, he writes, the plaintiffs didn't even claim to have been injured, nor did they cite any injuries to other. "The plaintiffs simply do not plead facts showing that hearing loss from iPod use is actual or imminent."

Judge Thompson's ruling is akin to the commonsense understanding that if you put your hand down a garbage disposal, then turn it on, you can't blame the disposal's manufacturer if your new nickname is "Stumpy" - especially if that manufacturer had warned you not to be such a thorough chowderhead.

Apple is off the hook, and the nanny state takes one in the teeth thanks to the levelheadedness of one Northern California judge.

Jailbreak Progress Update: iPod Touch 3G

The Chronic Dev-Team has posted an update on the jailbreak for the new iPod touch (ipt3).

-----
- After a stupid mistake was corrected, posixninja was able to use a payload written by ius that retrieved the location of the aes_crypto_cmd routine, so now we can decrypt the firmware files.
- “greenpois0n”, as in, the payload, is coming along quite nicely. This is it’s third rewrite, and I am doing it entirely in C with the exception of the loader.

Plans for the end product
- No DFU required
- No extra time to send over a ramdisk and boot that, everything is planned to be done over iBoot
- No IPSW required, firmware files are read directly from flash, then decrypted and patched on the fly, then reflashed and / or put aside to be booted from later
- If the device is connected in Normal Mode, automatically reboot into Recovery Mode
- Jailbreak takes less than 1 minute from the time it boots to recovery
- Verbose reporting of progress, like “patching iBoot” or “reflashing DeviceTree” on the screen of the device, if you don’t understand what this means, it is similar to what the screen looks like if you were verbose booting your Mac / iPhone
- Extra patches such as access to the UID and GID keys from userland automatically applied, no need to dig up kernel decryption keys and use the patcher provided in xpwn and such
- Totally untethered jailbreak. This may or may not require an extra exploit.
- In case our exploit is in any other firmware revision, it can be ported in just a few line changes.

If you did not understand what some of that meant, this is the most important fact: on release, you will be able to go up to some random laptop at Best Buy, download the very small program plug in your device no matter what state it is in (normal or recovery), run it, and 1 minute later your device will be jailbroken. I am obviously not suggesting you randomly go in and do that, but the point I am trying to get across is that you will not need to prerequisites like libUSB, just plug it in, push a button, and the jailbreak is done in 1 minute. This is the way jailbreaking should always be.

iFixit iPod Touch Teardown Reveals 802.11n Chip, Location for Camera

http://techau.tv/blog/images/a9302070fa6b_C794/iPodTouch2.jpg

iFixit's teardown of the new iPod touch has found an 802.11n compatible wireless chip and possibly space for a camera.

The chip found is the Broadcom BCM4329FKUBG wireless chip which supports 802.11n.

This is a big deal, as even the iPhone 3GS doesn't support 802.11n. The iPhone 3GS has a BCM4325 wireless chip, which only supports 802.11 a/b/g. We don't know yet if 802.11n will be supported in software, but at least the hardware's there. There's also Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and a FM receiver and transmitter packed into this chip. If they built in the antennas, and if Apple adds software support, you could theoretically stream music to your car stereo without any external hardware. But that's a lot of ifs.

iFixit was also able to find a spot which looks to be the location for a camera. It appears that Apple left in room for a camera in the top of the device. There is a 6mm x 6mm x 3mm space between the Broadcom chip and the wireless antenna. There isn't enough depth for an iPhone-style autofocus still camera, but just enough room for the camera that Apple used in the 5th generation iPod nano.

Apple Facing Problems With New iPod Touch?

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/09/apple-lets-rock-002.jpg

Apple may be facing problems with the production of the new iPod Touch, according to HardMac.com.

The problem is apparently with the new camera module and has been found in the first 1000 units produced. These units have been discarded.

We do not know if the problem has been solved in the meantime. In any case, the iPod Touch availability would be delayed and initial volumes reduced. If the problem has not been solved yet, then the updated iPod Touch might be significantly delayed.

Toshiba Ramps Up Flash Production Ahead of New iPod, Tablet?

Toshiba is expected to ramp up its NAND flash production to over 90% of its capacity in August, according to a DigiTimes report.

Their sources indicated that despite the increases in output, the chipmaker has told downstream players that its supply to the spot market will be limited, prompting speculation that the Japan supplier is seeing strong demand from Apple

September has been a typical time for Apple to update its iPod offerings; however, speculation has been rampant that Apple will introduce a new tablet device as well.

Apple Puts In Huge Order for iPod Cameras?

Sources in Asia say that Apple has placed an order for a massive number of camera modules for the iPod touch, according to a Tech Crunch report.

These are inexpensive cameras, in the $10 range. And the size of the order, our source says, means they can only be used for one thing - the iPods.

The order size is supposedly so large that some people in Taiwan are speculating that Apple may be planning to put cameras in the lower end of the iPod line, too. “Everything but the Shuffle may have a camera in it soon,” says our source.

With the huge success of video on the iPhone, Apple is likely looking to duplicate this success with the iPod. Coming in at a much lower price point the iPod is likely to attract many more buyers. Video and camera capabilities in addition to the iPod's obvious musical selling features could sway customers away from mini/budget camcorders.

How to Jailbreak Your iPod Touch on OS 3.0 Using RedSn0w (Windows)

Instructions on how to jailbreak your iPod Touch (1G or 2G) on OS 3.0 firmware using RedSn0w for Windows. The Mac version of this tutorial is here

Step One
Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage

Download RedSn0w from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the latest 3.0 firmware from below and place it in the same folder.

NOTE*: The iPod touch 3.0 firmware must be purchased from iTunes. iTunes will save the firmware files here:

Step Three
Once iTunes has finished updating your iPhone to the desired firmware you may launch redsnw0w.exe from the Pwnage folder on your desktop.

Step Four
Once RedSn0w opens click the Browse button

Step Five
Select the firmware ipsw we placed in the Pwnage folder on our desktop then click Open

Step Six
Once the firmware has been verified click the Next button to continue.

Step Seven
Make sure Cydia is selected and click the Next button.

Step Eight
Please plug your iPhone into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button

Step Nine
RedSn0w will now guide you through the steps to get into DFU mode.

Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.

Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.

Step Ten
Your iPhone will now reboot

Step Eleven
RedSn0w will then begin uploading the new RAM Disk.

Step Twelve
Once this is complete you will be notified that RedSn0w is done. Click the Finish button.

When your iPhone finishes reboot (5 minutes or so). It will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.
