Apple Preps Larger LED Cinema Display, Mac Pro Update

Apple is putting the finishing touches on a larger LED Cinema Display and a major update to the Mac Pro, according to AppleInsider sources.

The new 27" LED Cinema Display is targeted for release in June and is a slightly larger version of the existing 24" model introduced in October of 2008.

Apparently, the new display has been in Apple's labs for quite sometime referenced by codename "K59." It's thought that the company has been waiting for the larger 2560 by 1440 LCD panels to come down in price before introducing the model to market.

AppleInsider has also heard that "the brawniest update to the Mac Pro ever" is slated to arrive by June.

People familiar with the matter were stern in stating that Mac maker's plans call for a dodeca-core model, sporting a pair of Intel's latest Westmere-based hexacore chips for a total of 12 cores.

It's suggested that Apple will use a pair of Xeon 5600 Series "Gulftown" chips for a dodeca-core Mac Pro and a single processor model with 6 cores for the cheaper base model.

However, AppleInsider does note that there have been persistent rumors suggesting Apple would drop Xeon and adopt two of Intel's $999 3.33GHz Core i7-980X Extreme Edition uniprocessor chips for a 12-core Mac Pro. Since this chip is a uniprocessor model, Apple would need a dual motherboard to accomplish this.
