Apple Plans to Introduce HDMI Output for Macs?

Apple is preparing to add HDMI output to its Mac Minis and introduce a Mini-Displayport to HDMI adapter for iMacs and MacBooks, according to AppleInsider sources.

Prototypes of a new Mac mini have reportedly been making the rounds with an HDMI port in place of its legacy DVI connector, according to two people familiar with the matter.

If released the Mac Mini would become only the second Apple product to offer HDMI connectivity. The Apple TV being the first.

Also floating around the Apple labs is a proprietary mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter which was originally supposed to ship with the new iMac. Apparently the adapter will allow Macs shipping with an updated mini DisplayPort spec to send both video and audio through the mini Display port to the HDMI adapter.

The adapter was to ship alongside Apple Blu-ray drives in the high-end iMac; however, a last minute decision that scrapped the Blu-ray option also kept the adapter under wraps.
