I was scouring the net this evening, looking for a proper story to write on when I came across Matt Buser's (Yahoo Sports) latest. Sometimes I don't have to look very far to find an interesting topic.
Now let me start this off by saying that I do like Matt, and I do think his head is in the right place and he does do a decent job. Enough of the niceties, I also view some of his work to offer key opportunities for US, given the amount of people following his advice. Two particular areas of his latest piece need to be scrutinized more closely. Let's take a look:
Chris Paul: You know this is a subject that is near and dear to me. CP3 dealt a devastating blow to us all no doubt, but should we be looking to deal him for Jose Calderon?!? Just a little mix up in the numbers by Matt, he seems to have forgotten about the replacement player we find on the WW.
Check it out, first things first, I agree with what he says for H2H players. If you need to make a deal to make the playoffs, do it. If you're fairly secure in the standings, either 'keep' or 'trade for' CP3. But what about roto?
Buser suggests that we can expect CP3 to return for half the remaining 32 games of the hornets, and thus we can presume a line of 10.2 points, 0.6 threes, 2.3 boards, 5.6 assists, 1.3 turnovers, 1.2 steals. OK, I can get behind that. He then goes on to suggest that since these numbers are similar to Jose Calderons line, that would be a potential trade to look at. What?!
Here's a couple other guys for you - TJ Ford, Will Bynum, Allen Iverson, Luke Ridnour, Kyle Lowry, Steve Blake. These guys are all likely sitting on your FA wire and plugging them in for the next 16 games while CP3 is out, then plugging Paul back in, puts you well ahead of any Jose Calderon type deal. I'm gonna go out on a limb here, but I'll bet you all even found someone a little bit better to plug in. Am I right?
Whatever you do, don't give Chris Paul away for Jose Calderon or Lou Williams or Jason Terry or whatever. That's a sure fire ticket to creating a winner......out of the guy who gets CP3. If you play in a H2H league, and you are out of the playoffs right now, like we said target a top 3 team and sell them on the CP3 edge during the crucial final three weeks. If you play Roto, chances are you aren't going to get great offers for Paul so he's better to just hold onto. If you can snag a Rondo, or even a Baron Davis (who's an injury risk himself), then maybe it's worth it. Otherwise, hold tight and be patient.
The second thing I'd like to point out is the Market Movers section of his posts. Look familiar? You guessed it, might as well label this the Buy High/Sell Low section. Take some average players who are on a hot streak, sprinkle in a Yahoo Sports analyst writing them up in his latest post as 'trending up', and they're ripe for a proper thievin trade offer. Use this to your advantage and get those Delfino offers rolling!
I've followed Buser for a long time, one thing I can assure you (which lends further support to my Buy Low Sell High strategy) you'll never see the same players listed in the Market Movers section on consecutive posts. Indeed quite often a player is trending up this week, and two weeks down the road we'll see the same player trending down. Nice eh?
One last thing, I'm going to put up a post sometime soon on Steve Blake, but I wanted to sound the alarm right now. Looks like Portland is heavily involved in the trade market, looking for a big. The two guys they have to move are Andre Miller or Steve Blake. Whatever happens, Blake is the winner in the deal and should become a serviceable PG for your squad. If you've got room, add him now. If you don't have room, don't panic. Work the 2-1 offers and create room. We should have plenty of time before the Blazers ink any deals (at least after the AS break) and Blake is certainly not on anyones radar.
Anyone other than US that is.
