You know, in basketball even if you're playing a Head to Head format, you're still playing Roto style, just that your Roto game is week to week. That being said, this post relates to you too. today I'm going to highlight four players that I like to call The Roto Studs. They're the guys that are perfect to have on your team as they chip in to near every category. They are all Tier Three players, save for one that's a Tier Two, but most owners don't realize their true value. If you can convince someone to sell you a Roto Stud, you'll be happy you did so.
Gerald Wallace
GWall is an unbelievable athlete who can jump out of the gym. Ridiculously enough, he plays the 3, yet is second in the league is Rebounds per game. Read that again, second in the league to Superman. Unreal. Take a look at everything else:
CAT 2009
PTS 18.1
REB 12.1
AST 1.9
STL 1.8
BLK 0.9
3's 0.6
FT% 73.8
FG% 46.5
TO 2.9
Almost perfect. You know, he is good at everything, master at nothing. Compare his line to the sauce. This guy helps you out in 6 of 9 categories, still chips in enough 3's to not hurt you, and it's only the turnovers and assists that are low. This is a guy you get and you don't give up. I know he's injury prone, I know the rebounds are DOUBLE his career numbers, but even if he goes down for a week or two, even if the Boards come down to earth, he's still too valuable to part with. You just won't get value for him. The hallmark of a Roto stud, by the way, is the high points, high FG%, as you'll see with the rest.
Joe Johnson
Another awesome Roto stud. I feel like I spend half the season every year trying to work Joe J off of another manager. Like I said, once you get one of these guys, you don't let him go. He's a building block, almost like a Tier One player (but not as dominant).
CAT 2009
PTS 21.3
REB 5.4
AST 5.2
STL 1.1
BLK 0.0
3's 1.5
TO 2.2
FG% 45.7
FT% 85.1
Again notice the high FG%, high points. Look at your team, look at the guys averaging over 20 points a game and see what their FG% looks like. Joe J helps you in literally every category except blocks and he's a little high in Turnovers. That 20 point, 5 board and 5 assist line is fantasy gold.
Antawn Jamison
The high points, high FG% phenomenon is much easier when we're talking about a big man. Time Duncan shoots over 50% from the field, so does Dwight Howard. But Joe J and G Wall are also chipping in some treys for you, and still pulling in respectable boards. Then there's Antawn, he does it all...
CAT 2009
PTS 20.4
REB 8.3
AST 1.1
STL 1.2
BLK 0.3
TO 1.4
3's 1.5
FG% 48.3
FT% 66
Those three pointers are really the icing on the cake. Hurts you a bit in dimes and less even in blocks. The FT% is an anomaly compared to his career average, and we profiled that in our Buy Low earlier this year. But the rest of the numbers, including the low turnovers, are fantasy gold.
Jason Richardson
This last guy is a favorite of mine. You'll notice he and GWall are less well rounded than the other two, but offer the more dominant stats for a particular category. For G Wall it's the boards, for J-Rich it's the three's. And again, the key here is high fg%.
CAT 2009
PTS 15.6
REB 5.0
AST 1.9
STL 0.9
BLK 0.5
3's 2.0!!!!
TO 1.2
FG% 47.0
FT% 76.0
J-Rich's points per game are currently sitting at an 8 year low, which is the only reason you might be able to get his manager to sell him right now. Helps you in literally every category except dimes, and the low TO's is a gem. Averaging 2 treys a game while shooting 47% from the field is unreal. The nice thing about these Roto studs is their Rank (be it yahoo or ESPN) never truly show you their value.
I'm now sitting on three of these guys, and trying to work on getting Joe J on my squad too. Do the math yourself, look over the numbers for these four guys, add in a decent to good point guard and center and you'll quickly realize you have every category covered in a pretty dominating way. I'm fully aware that each of these four guys misses time to injuries regularly, and that's definitely important to know and be aware of. Also, two players who are quickly earning themselves a spot in this group, especially with this years performance, are Carmelo Anthony and Monta Ellis. Though Anthony has been so hot we like him as a Sell High.
But you'll be hard pressed to find such excellent all around contributors as The Roto Studs. Take a look yourself, look over other Tier Three players like Chauncey Billups and Josh Smith and you'll instantly see what I mean!

McG, bibby over Chandler. Try n move Gallinari n Dunleavy in a 2-1 for a roto stud.
ReplyDeleteIntro, I like both those deals. Good luck!
Mambo, eyooooooo hell no!!!!
ReplyDeleteThief my man!!! Is it time to deal BRoy? He's been a monster lately but with Portland's luck with injuries you can only hope his injury isn't worst then reported. So what other star player should I target that can help my team?

Mambo, maybe you should reread this post?
ReplyDeleteCarlos, I made an offer for Roy this morning hoping his owner sells low like you want to.
yea tru j rich is pretty clutch wit dat field goal%. he has been slumpin a bit but im sure he will be pickin it up. i was thinking about trying to get mayb b roy and frye for rudy gay and thad, i do lose alot of steals though
ReplyDeletewhat it do pimpin?
ReplyDeleteayo, so i was offered this trade
i give:
gasol
dunleavy
griffin
for:
kevin martin
brooks
okur
obviously i gain a lot of 3's, but okur is really injury prone, brooks is streaky, and kmart is good, just when he plays...at first i thought to decline it and counter it, but then i decided to ask you first (see how much i trust you)

ReplyDeleteWho said sell low? It was merely a question. Care to give some advice now?
Mamb, I like scoring Roy right now on the cheap.
ReplyDeleteAyoooo, yup, walk away from this one.
I thought this was a blog for advice???
ReplyDeleteHey Thief,
ReplyDeleteI took your advice and offered Granger for Boozer and Roy and INKED IT! It took some convincing, but I followed your 5 steps and, after a week or so, he finally gave in!
Honestly, I wouldn't have been able to pull off a trade like this without your "Str8 Thievin" advice!!
Love you man!!
Carlos, calm down man. I'm sure Thief does more with his day than sit around waiting for questions from bloggers. Hell, I'm impressed that he answers questions as quickly and as often as he does. We're lucky to have him do his blog...don't go pissin him off! haha
ReplyDeleteVery true! My apologies Thief...I guess my question was to dumb to deserve advice lol...my bad!
ReplyDeleteHey Thief, excellent new post. Just an update. I tried to get K.G., but no dice. This one dude is shopping Murphy(again) and Kaman. I was looking at GWall before since I need rebounds. I have Jamison. Should I pursue GWall and/or Richardson? Thanks. My team and sauce:

ReplyDeleteCarlos, just sayin now is the time to be buyin Roy, not tryin to sell him. Peeps don't pay up for injured playas.
Bando, yup! GWall first tho.
Gotcha!!! I'm in 9th place in my a league so desperation is starting to sink in. Once again my apologies.
ReplyDeleteI hear you Carlos, no need to panic. You should be lookin to sell high on horford, bosh n gallinari. Not sure how many of my old posts you've read, but I think there's a wealth of good info out there for ya. Don't worry we'll get u out of the cellar!!
ReplyDeleteThanks man! Followed your advice and placed Bosh on the block, right away 4th place team offered KLove and Bryant for Bosh and Artest. Should I pull the trigger?
ReplyDeleteThe rest of his team:
Monta, Bryant, Turkoglu, Butler, Melo, LMA, Z-Bo, Beasley, TChander, Birdman, KLove, T-Mac and Stuckey.
Yes! Booyah! Now that's straight thievin!!!
ReplyDeleteYou're da man!!!
ReplyDeleteim not sure about jrich. he was hot last month but cooled off since, however i guess he could be a buy low right now. i just traded for him hoping i am right
ReplyDeletekeV, if cold is droppin two treys a game and shooting 47%, I can't wait to see hot!!
ReplyDeletehes shooting only 37.52% in december. im just hoping its a slump
ReplyDeleteBout to make this offer. I have Rondo and would like to get Joe Cool...and want to make a fair offer - are these 2 legit?
ReplyDeleteA) Rondo+JNelson
B) JoeCool+LouisWill
A) Salmons
B) LouisWill
Kevin, I get 39.7%, but we're splitting hairs. I also discounted the games of the 12, 13 and 15 due to his being hurt. But yes at the end of the day, Hes a career 45% shooter and hit at a 48% clip last year, and I love him with Nash. All just my two cents.
ReplyDeleteIntro, I like the offers so long as u can lose rondos steals and all those dimes. I'd like to see you get Lou back at least to replace the dimes.
Yep I think I'll be good with dimes, steals will be an issue i have to resolve. This is a keepers league. I also just sent out:
ReplyDeleteRondo+Charlie+Marion+Udrih
DWill+SJax+Speights
again you keep 3 at the end of the season
i agree that he should be playing better or shooting better atleast, especially playing in phx with nash. thats why i traded for him recently hoping its just a slump. still, i appreciate all the work you do on this site!
ReplyDeleteHey thief. I just recalculated my current sauce with kevin martin's 08 numbers so the sauce wouldn't be inflated because of his outrageous numbers in 5 games this season.

As you can see, I'm very weak in rebounds and assists.
I figure assists are slightly harder to come by so I want to drop one of my players and pick up your dime specialist, Chris Duhon.
I just can't figure out who to drop...
I have a pending trade..
I give Jason Kidd and Mike Dunleavy
I get Troy Murphy and Brandon Jennings
On my roster I have
Broy
Mredd
Tparker

Laldridge
Abargnani
Kperkins
Abynum
Pgasol

Jkidd
I've kind of given up hope for trading *for now*
All my friends are either non-responsive, or just ignorant.
I sent out a trade offer that you would not be proud of... I was giving up too much and getting back too little.. BUT it was an even trade. I was giving the guy exactly what he needed, and I was getting back exactly what I needed. He refused because he didn't want to give up a big name player. He even refused Gerald Wallace for Rudy Gay straight up (which might have been a good decision after reading your last post).
Anyways... That's why I'm trying to pick up Chris Duhon to help me out on the assist category but I don't know who to drop.
Thanks Kevin, it's also about what u give up to get him right. I feel pretty gooD lettin go of butler.
ReplyDeletei gave vc/salmons for jrich/jeff green. not sure if it was a good trade since vc is the best player in this trade but he also has been struggling shooting and salmons is just plain awful right now
ReplyDeleteyo yo yo. happy holidays.
ReplyDeleteso after i offered: granger/aldridge/brooks for cp3/k.love dude rejected and said that he would take it if i offered someone other than love. so here are some of his better players:
paul pierce
monta ellis
j. thompson (who i traded to him for j.salmons/stack jack)
a. randolph (ditto)
e. brand
c. lee
peja
what do you think pimpin? cp3/the truth or is that too much or should i do something else
hows it going thief,

I think that I could work a two for 1 for Kevin Durant - the guy in my league that has him is a huge 76er fan and wants Iggy. Who should I package with him?
Are my 3 point makes a problem? I just traded Gallinari for K. Love so they are a bit low.
Some names out there on the wire: Jack, Hinrich, Gomes, Watson....pretty slim pickins in a deep, competitive league!
Thanks for the advice bro!
Senn, drop big perk. Sorry your league blow bro.
ReplyDeleteKev, not bad, not great but you ditched bad fg% fo sho
Pavel, truth is hurt so he might do it. Else try brand.
Garg, shoot him back askin for Joe j for horf, see what he says.
Thief, you said I should try to go after GWall, but who should I offer for him? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteStodds, I don't have them since I've never played in a league like that before. My guess (off the top of my head) is that of the 6 average boards per game, 1.8 are OFF and 4.2 are DEF.
ReplyDeletePO, start with Courtney Lee and Iggy and work your way down. Be sure to play up Lee's Steals Per Game, works every time. Your three's are a problem, get Durant first, then address them directly. WW won't help it seems, though of the group Jack is the best add.
Bando, why not Caron Butler? Try Butler and maybe throw in AI if need be. Good luck!!
alright but should i get rid of the momba and brand to get joe j and hortfod. or should i give him murphy and stephen jackson. it would be great to have kobe and joe j together
ReplyDeleteWhat's happening Thief? Merry Christmas to you and yours.
ReplyDeleteQuick question for you regarding the sauce calculations. I'm playing in a 10 team roto league with 10 starting players, 3 bench. To get the correct number I'm just deviding the combined stats of my starters by ten for each CAT correct? In "Secret Sauce" you imply your readers to adjust accordingly as per the size and settings of their league. I just wanted to make sure I'm doing it right. Thanks thief.
This is my first year ever playing FNBA and I'm just loving it. Even on Christmas eve. hah Your feedback is greatly appreciated T.
PS. I'm working on something for Dwest and Jrich. I will post the framework if I somehwere with it.
Here's my starting lineup:
ReplyDeletePG/G: DWill - Rondo
SG: Wade
SF: Butler
PF/F: Nowitzki - Garnett
C: B.Lopez - Brand
Util: Lou Will - Ben Gordon
Bench: Deng - Salmons - Dampier

I'm having a hard time putting together something worth him listening to. lo
Jrich and West owner also has crash. Another guy I would love for his stat stuffing tendencies. lol
ReplyDeleteGarg, my bad dawg. Shoot him back Brand n Jackson for Joe J. I read your post wrong.
ReplyDeleteJ, yeah I mean the Sauce is really a benchmark you know. If I calc my sauce for a 12 team league, and you for a 10, they won't be very different at all (maybe .2 per cat average). It's all about knowing where you are high and where you are low. If you got a .50 in a 12 team league for treys, or a .60 in a 10 team league, either way, you know you need treys. You feel me dawg?
J, lookin at the sauce, you need J-Rich brosam. Try sendin him Deng and Salmons to start.
I feel the same way and I'm working it. I'm first in my league. The only cats I struggle with are threes, fg% and TO's which I've tossed out the window. Jrich would be real nice.
ReplyDeleteOhhhhhh, J - Rich hits those areas PERFECTLY.
ReplyDeleteHe's wanting a big time scorer. IE one of Wade or Dirk.
ReplyDeleteI can afford to give up points but at what cost?
ReplyDeleteThe players he has that I covet are Jrich, Crash, Dwest and Al Jef.
Okay Thief, so I offered B. Davis(He's dead last in my league in assists) and C. Butler for GWall and JRich. Will let you know what happens.
ReplyDeleteJ, I guess Dirk could equal big al and j-rich, but only if you can start them both. Even then I'd try n get a little more in the deal, lol, it's the thief in me.
ReplyDeleteBando, LOVE THAT OFFER!!

i'm also thinking of trading carmelo and bynum to another manager for dwade and mo williams. or maybe dwade and bjennings. the only other player i'd be interested in on his team is dwight howard. since i'd be offering melo in both of these trades, i also want to know which you think is more profitable.
