Joe Schmoe Sportswriters

We’ve all fallen victim to this mistake in the past, and no matter how much we tell ourselves it won’t happen again, we continue to do it. I’m talking about paying too much attention to the news. One thing I can tell you for certain is that Joe Schmoe news writers, and especially sports writers or fantasy sports writers, don’t get paid to produce dull stories. We’re talking about a group of guys and girls that went to journalism school to learn the art of making even the dullest of events interesting. It is without doubt that after every single big game a player has, there will be some writer out there making it seem like this is the big breakout or he’s the next dominant player. Likewise, after every single disappointing night for a superstar player, there’s at least one person telling you he’s injured or he’s not happy or he just doesn’t have it anymore. It’s all a load of bull.

If there’s anything you should take away from this site, it’s that numbers don’t lie.

Particularly when you’ve got a bunch of them put together. In fact, the more numbers you got, the closer you get to the truth. Alternatively, a good writer can make you completely ignore the numbers and go straight to the emotions of the day.

Early in the 09 baseball season, I was sitting there going over my team and realizing that with both Jacoby Ellsbury and Chone Figgins on my squad, I was too heavy in the stolen bases category and in need of a pitcher. I approached an opponent of mine with a sweetheart deal, Chone Figgins for Rich Harden. He replied to my trade request with a rejection, and almost exactly quoted the latest news story of the day. ‘Hey man, while this deal looks real good on paper, I fear that Figgins just isn’t the same player he used to be, and his batting average is too low’. This after a game where Figgins went 0-5 and the little note next to his name in fantasy said exactly ‘Figgins doesn’t appear to be the same player he used to be’. Way to be original buddy. Figgins went on to have an outstanding year and in fact ended up being my keeper. Hooray for me, boo for the other manager.

During the 2009 football season, in his first game of the year, Matt Schaub threw up a real stinker versus the NY Jets. I had scouted Schaub pretty heavily during the off-season (he went to my wife’s alma mater, so she played a part as well) and had high expectations for him. Immediately after the game reports came poring out that Schaub looked shaky, he looked like he must be hurt, and that the Texans might want to think about benching him. Taking this foolish advice to heart, I benched Mr. Schaub in week two of the season, a move that cost me the win that week as Schaub bounced back with a stellar performance…….and it cost me the division title in my league, which I missed by one win. Shame on me.

Two other players that have had much of the same types of stories written about them early this NBA season were Kevin Garnett and Gilbert Arenas. For both it was after disappointing games, and while both are coming off of injury plagued seasons, the stories were equally glorified to the point of ridiculousness. Many ballas out there dealt Garnett and Arenas on this advice, and aren’t too happy about doing so today.

Don’t get me wrong, injury news matters. It makes sense to track your players and see if they are injured, and if they are, to see what that injury is. But you have to do your best to parse out the opinion from stories and get right to the heart of the matter, what happened. Then all it takes is a quick google search to discover relevant information and expectations on the injury. If it’s a jammed finger, or a cut on the face, or something insignificant, have no fear that the player will be fine and not suffer performance wise. This, despite those incessant notes next to the players name that will tell you ‘OH GOD IT WAS HORRIBLE!’.

And aside from that, there really isn’t anything else to pay attention to. If a player has a bad night, and some Joe Schmoe tells you his career is over or he’s fighting with his wife or he’s about to have a child or whatever, just ignore it. These are professionals and talent trumps all. Everyone has a bad game, or even a bad streak of games, don’t make a stupid mistake because some writer made you believe it was going to last forever. And just incase you forget what to expect from a guy, have no fear; a quick glance at his past performances should remind you that this is indeed a slump. Look over any player last year, even Kobe Bryant (who in April 09 had back to back 16 point games) and you’ll see that off-nights just happen (more so for some than others). Always trust your gut, and the work you put into scouting players, over the latest news story from some guy trying to earn a living.

Thanks for being patient while I update and make changes to the blog. If nothing else, it should load a lot faster for everyone now!

  1. Are you still feeling Okafor as a buy low? I have him on my team and really would like to trade him because he's been so unproductive lately...It's not even that he's playing poorly, he's just not getting minutes. His minutes continue to decrease, dipping below 25 min/game in 4 of his last 7 and he only played 11 min in the first half tonight. I don't get it! Songalia is the guy who's getting minutes!!! What should I do?

  3. AL, what would you expect to get for him now? Probably not much, but I tell you what, I'm going to go offer something teeeeensy to the owner of Okafor in my league cause somethin tells me he's ready to pull the plug just like you!

    Lucky, thats a sweet deal.

  4. yo thief,

can you give your opinion regarding anthony randolph and stephen curry and the wacky situation in GS? i have both players in a 14 team league. thanks.

i give: nash, love, eric gordon

i get: arenas, broy, al jefferson/randolph

  6. hey thief, what to do with charlie v? dude has been struggling badly and him injury seems like it will linger all year, maybe. he is untradeable at this point and maybe dropping him for someone like dudley makes sense? my team needs help with 3's and 3pt%

    ReplyDelete
  7. or lol if he doesnt take them. ill take out love and jefferson. is it still good?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Ritzi, both are superb talents under a ridiculous coach. I think Curry will be rosterable all year and randolph might get dealt away. In either case, if i could deal the, for value i would.

Lucky, the only one of those deals I like is the one with Al Jeff.

Woozy, unless your in a H2H league and desperate, I'd hang on to Charlie V. Give him another week or two. He has the same injury as Granger (Grangers more severe) so I'm not surprised he's struggling, but he deserves a chance before we cut loose.

  12. You continue to impress Thief.

What's your thoughts on Ariza's value, he is killing my field goal percentage, I'm last in my league in that catagorie and he is a big reason why, anyone I could trade for him?

    ReplyDelete
  13. WB, have you caught my whole rant comparing granger to quentin?

Phil, thanks, I'm not high on Ariza. Why not shoot for Ben Gordon?

  14. Great post thief, this is very true. I was listening to the radio and they were talking about how gilbert has lost a step and its down hill from here. Look at him now, lost a step? Great read.

  15. Alright Thief, lets see if you can dial up a big trade for me.

Ben Gordon is on a team with an extremley active owner. I'd like to get rid of some inconnsistent players on my team (Harrington, Ariza).

  16. phil, you offer granger, harry and ariza, and when you do, send him over that garbage news story being floated that granger is only two weeks away from playing. Ask for Billups, B Gordo and E Brand back. BOOYAH! You take Billups for Granger, not bad value and u need dimes. You take Ben Gordo for Harry, pretty even but Ben is more consistent. You take Brand for Ariza which should be a big hidden upgrade and totally helps you in the blocks area. INK IT PLAYA

  17. Great Post Thief!

Would a be a good deal if I offered Steph Curry for Okafor?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Thief,

I too have been a victim of the Joe Schmo's sportwriters. Last year, thry gave so nuch exposure to Luke Hochevar (KC Royals) debut, that I actually picked up the bum for his debut, The results was about 2 IP and pver 8 or 9 ER. That was my lesson to forget the Schmo's and follow my gut ;-) About B. Gordon, should I offer E. Gordon to get him? Thanks bro

  19. hey thief

what do u think of anthony randolph...biedrins is back and randolph has shifted to pf...hes finally been putting up the big numbers taht are expected of him

is he finally living up to his potential..or is he ripe for a sell high?

    ReplyDelete
  20. LOL, Thief, I am now lucky my T.Evans + D.West for P.Gasol + C.Lee was rejected yesterday. You saw what David West did tonight and I expect him to average at least 20 PPG from now on, as his career numbers suggest...

Now I've offered Tyreke Evans + J.R. Smith for Gasol and Lee. I'm sure you will like that one. ;) I also wrote the other manager and teased her a bit about West's performance - I said she should be careful this time around, cause if she now rejected the new deal too, J.R. Smith could easily follow in West's footsteps and go for another 10 treys and 40 pts the very next night...LOL

But now I am worried she might find it hard to give up Pau Gasol, since he is having a great game at the moment. :( It would have helped me if he were to suck tonight...LOL

  21. Great blog again. Keep them coming! I was wondering what you thought of Anthony Randolph as well. He's having another block party and playing with Biedrins. I took him in the 6th round after reading a lot about his monster potential. I'm not ready to let him go, but if the thief says it's time to sell, I'm listening yo!

    ReplyDelete
  22. i bought low on david west and the trade went through today, so i didn't get west's stats for today, but thanks for the tip! i dealt gallinari and jameer nelson for him in a keeper league.

  23. Yo thief, great stuff still continues. My team in a 10 team h2h standard cats is

    Deron Williams
    Eric Gordon
    Stephen Jackson
    Carlos Boozer
    Marcus camby
    Kevin Love
    Brandon Jennings
    Aaron Brooks
    Michael Beasley
    Brendan Haywood
    Charlie Villanueva

What would you think of dealing boozer for monta ellis straight up with this squad? The SSC says i have boards to give up. If you dont like this, Ive been trying to find some way to deal one of my big men for a guard. Any suggestions?

  24. who would you rather have? rip or salmons?

    Thanks

I'm new to secret sauce and am in major need for some reconstruction! Any chance you could help me out? I wish I had the sauce when I started before making all these horrible adds and drops. Had major injuries like k.martin, a.biedrins, t.thomas and in a league this deep every injury is a major blow. Anyhow, let me know if there's anything I can do in this trade to climb my way up up. 34. Hey Thief, hope all is well...so Kobe/KLove trade fell through after being veto and Kobe dropping 34, 38 and 44 he has decided he wants to keep him lol (can't blame him for that). Anyway let's see if you can help dial a blockbuster for Ben Gordon. 35. Andy, at most I'd offer Curry. Okafor is dirt cheap right now.

Gerry, hochevar lol. Yeah I think EG for BG is a decent deal. Kind of an even swap you know. Very similar.

Loho, I expect Randolph to be dealt.

Christo!!!! Nice offer, the other one wasn't so bad tho, just wasn't thievin. I hope you buy her a dinner after the job this trade will do on her.

Pouch, they are shopping him. Let's see if/where he goes first.

Stodds, boozer for monta is OK, but I'd try to work in Charlie V an a 2-2. Get a wee bit more in return.

Renz, I'd rather have Salmons. Coaching change will help. Password is in the emails, you need to get posts via emails to see it. Sign up with the link below this box.

Aaron, it's the reciprocal to reflcet that turnovers are a bad thing, you feel me. So a guy averaging 2 turnovers, gets a score of 1/2, which is better than 3 turnovers 1/3.

Kael, that's OK. Okafor would be a very cheap source of blocks right now too.

Williams, uhhhhhhhhh haven't heard that one before. Do u have MS excel?

Ak, I lke it if the sauce does!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Thanks for the help. Do you have time for one more question... Who do you see more valuable Jerryd Bayless or Delonte West? Is Portland going to shake up their line up to acquire a center or what? Will Delonte develop some consistency to make him a good add?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Hehe... In my league Richard Jefferson got dropped just prior to his 24-point game. I've made a waiver claim, dropping Stephen Curry. Should I go for it, thinking that Jefferson will play better from now till the end of the season? I would lose quite a few steals, but otherwise it's just what I need - trading assists for points and rebounds...

    ReplyDelete
  38. Lanc, try offerin evans n brown for Jamison. See what the reaction is.

Liezl, I only see one player in that deal, Deron Williams. Go for it!

Fran, DO NOT COUNTER!! INK IT NOW!!! That's a sick good deal for you. Damn man take it n run

Carlos, try Ben gordo n Josh smith (or d Howard) for gallinari, young n speights. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Rejected lol...no interest in any sixers he said. Should I try Artest and Gallo for JSmith and BGordon?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Udrih (PHI), Frye (BOS), Perkins (PHO), Gallinari (NJ), Al Harrington (NJ), Wilson Chandler (NJ)

which 4 would you start today?

  41. Hey Thief, I have a mac, and it defaults to numbers. Is there a trick when using a mac?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Pouch, I'd prefer Delonte. They want to work him in more.

McG, go with udrih, perk, galli and Al.

Willy, don't know, never used a mac? Try openoffice.org
