How to Identify Active Managers for Trading

One question I seem to field a lot from readers is how to know who to target in trade offers in terms of opposing managers. It’s tough because most fantasy sports sites only allow players to send out a max number of trade offers. No sense wasting those offers on a guy who looks at his team once a week, doesn’t make any moves, and generally doesn’t contribute much to the action. There are some key ways that we can determine who are the people to target and who are the people to stay away from. My experience in this subject is somewhat limited to the Yahoo system however I’m sure the same information can be found through any other site including ESPN or CBS sports.

First and foremost, the most likely person to trade with you is going to be the guy (or guys) who do a lot of ADD/DROPS. In Yahoo, there is a column on the main page of your league that is titled ‘Moves’. Under it, you will see the amount of times a manager has added or dropped a player from his roster this season. There’s two important pieces of information conveyed in this number. First off, you know the guy is active. He’s checking his team often and has no problem making adjustments as needed. This guy is likely to see your offer pretty quickly, and is surely OK with making any moves he deems relevant. To give you a frame of reference, to this point in the season, I have made 36 ‘moves’. That’s a lot so don’t be dismayed, but you would classify me as a guy whose willing to deal. Next to me the ‘active’ managers in my league have 22, 16, 11, and 10 moves made. These are the first guys I am going after in a deal. Conversely, the guy with zero moves and the guy with one move, are the managers who fall in love with their players and their draft and I’ll not waste a minute offering them anything.

The second piece of information that ‘moves’ tells you, by the way, is that a manager is not satisfied with his team. This doesn’t mean he has a bad team, it just means he’s smart enough to ride trends or swap in looking for the right guy. Again, guys with high moves are exactly the type of guy you want to make a deal with.

The other way to tell who is good to trade with, and who is active in a league, is by checking when they last did something in the league. In yahoo, just above the standings, is a hyperlink for ‘Managers’. Here you will see when each manager last did something in your league. If you look at mine, it’s likely that the timestamp will be relatively close to right now. I’m always on my page, reading up on players, checking stat lines, etc. Alternatively, you’ll see some guys that haven’t been active for a day, two days, five days etc. Take my advice on this one gents, the guy who looks every five days never even notices your offers. Move on.

By targeting the right managers for offers, you’ll increase your odds of actually making a move in a reasonable amount of time. For those inactive, the best way to try and trade with them is through direct email. Good luck!

  3. Clint, you need to be cashin in on some Gallinari! Package him up with Westbrook, you have dimes to spare. Start u need blocks, start big n go Duncan, KG an Amare, work from there. I'm jealous, this'll be a fun trade for you! Off the FA we'd like u to have Duhon, he'll replace westy if u need it.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Ok yea the guy that has amare refuses to trade unless he gets a huge upperhand...we have tried to make deals before and he will make offers like boozer, b lopez and love for j smith, okafor and r brewer was the last thing he offered me....but the guy wit amare is the worst in three pointers and he is like 100 behind the next lowest person....

and another guy has duncan and kg....hes not really that active but im gon send him an email and see what he says...

id love to get rid of westbrook and gallanari in one trade lol....they both give me headaches wit the low fg% and hit or miss nights...

  6. Hello I'm epiphany.
I got a deal for Amare in place...
    I give
    D.Lee/J.Salmons

    I get
    A.Stoudmire/J.Harden
Would this be good for me??
I might be able to get Bibby or Westbrook instead of Harden, but he countered my Rose/Stoudmire offer with this. He changes his mind fast but is this a good trade?

a guy that is really touchable for me becuz the guy is active and willing to trade and needs depth is gerald wallace...would he help me...he doesnt do much for blocks and my boards are pretty good as is...but i cld use the steals...i cld possibly make a big move for his chris paul 2...

  8. Lucky, pair up pierce n a bench player. Try to trade up, maybe B Roy? Maybe Vince Carter? You dig?

Epiphany, love the deal but go for bibby over harden.

so from the dude that accepted my bargnani for his stephen jackson (which got vetoed...) is down to trade. I'm pretty sure I can run something that he will readily accept. He did say he wants some assists, and my team has that. So can you work you magic again, i need your advice.

im not that in love with my players but i think i could substitute ray ray with nene, wouldnt that be better. can you explain why this works please?

  15. Thief good post in targeting active managers for trades.

My question: should I try to offer my Bargnani+Kaman for Sjax+Horford.

Bargnani has a tad bit more value in our league, being young and it being a keepers league where we take 3 players into next year. He was my 3rd keeper last year and I believe that next year (If/When) Bosh leaves, Bargnani's true value/worth will be shown when he is the Big man of the team and begins on his Norwitzki journey, starting next year. Lol ok enough of me trying to be Nostradamus. I'm trying to win this year and don't mind trading Bargnani if the deal is right. Does that 2for2 offer seem right? thanks!

  27. Will, we gotta move granger yo. Grapevine tells me news on him gets worse n worse. Find the unsuspecting mgr, package him with okur n shoot for a mid tier big. I'd like to see you bring in a Howard in a 2-1, or brand type in a 2-2. Talk to me, what's on the block that we can target?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Based off of the above article and trying to target the teams with the most moves, the big men on these teams worth mentioning are Josh Smith, Kevin Garnett, Jason Thompson, or Gerald Wallace. Dwight, Boozer, Amare and Dirk are all on completely inactive teams with no moves.

My league is actually made up with a bunch of first-timers to the fantasy basketball scene (including myself, although I'm doing tons of homework) so no trades have even been done yet. I figure I'd have to talk them into whatever I propose.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I actually got Granger when another leaguemate dropped him, hoping everyone else would avoid him because he's injured. I dropped my lowest player and picked him up, which I hear the other guy was upset to hear. Perhaps I could try to trade him back to this guy too. He's got David Lee and Lamarcus Aldridge.

  30. Will, god I'd love to play in a league that drops Danny Granger! Sounds like you're on the right track here tho.

    Bynum

assuming it doesnt get vetoed (freaking haters mang...)how did I do?

  33. Thief do you think Okur is fair value for Marion? I have a feeling Okur could give me same stats as Marion (outside of defensive stats which I'm good with for now) and an extra 3? Any thoughts on this? Marion is currently sitting on my bench:

I give: Marion I get: Okur

    thanks

    ReplyDelete
  34. Po, i LOVE Galli for Love, that's theivin to the max!

Pavel, you even topped me on that on. I tell ya, I'm gonna bet you end up likin Bynum most of that crew. Sick deal playa, nice score.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Thanks Thief...do you think it gets vetoed? if you look at their averages, they are basically even, aside from 3pt going to Gallo and boards going to Love. That's why I think that it looks even and should go through. Have you made any posts about vetos?

  37. hey thief,

it's me again, i asked you about melo and nene a few days ago but i haven't been able to get online for a few days.

Here's my team again, 10 team H2H with odd cats (FGM, FG%, FT%, 3pm, pts, oreb, rebs, ast, st, blk, to):

    Paul
    Dunleavy
    Westbrook
    Anthony
    West
    Nene
    Scola
    Green
Millsap (dropped Morrow, need rebs this week)
Terry (dropped CDR when terry became free)
    Amare

    Pts: 17.1
    Rebs:5.87
    Ast: 3.14
    3pt: .7
    Stl: 1.06
    Blk: .57

(Not quite sure how to adjust it for my 10-team league)

You suggested a melo + scola/dunleavy for someone like dirk but won't that just hurt my rebounds? I can afford to give up a few points, but what areas should I try strengthen, should i get more assists to dominate the category completely, or try get more boards??

CDR is still on waivers, i could let ship melo/dunleavy and pick up CDR to make up some points lost.

    What should I do man?!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hey Thief. Me again. I had to move fast and accepted the deal. Pairing Dwill with Rondo was to good to pass up on. Hopefullly Caron can pick it up to Iggy's level and this should be some sweet deal for me.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Yo thief!

I found out that the guy who owns Dirk, Caron Butler, Elton Brand, Chris Bosh (to name a few) is putting his whole team on the market. Apparently he wants to re-do his entire team and is willing to deal anybody to change up his roster.

I offered Tony Parker, Paul Pierce, LaMarcus Aldridge for Dirk and Caron Butler.

I know I might be giving up a lot but I've been trying to move Parker and Pierce for a while now and I feel it would be nice to get Dirk and Butler.

I also want to make an offer for Joe Johnson and Jeff Green again. That owner doesn't want Pierce of Parker so I offered Andrew Bynum and Mike Dunleavy but he wants Pau Gasol instead of Bynum because of Bynum's recent slump, as well as Gasol's recent surge.

Is Gasol and Dunleavy too much to give up for Joe Johnson and Jeff Green?

If both these went through, my team would look something like this.

    Dirk, Butler, J Johnson, J. Green, M. Redd, R. gay, A. Bynum, Kevin Martin, J. Kidd, B. Roy, K. Perk, A. Bargnani.

That leaves me one open slot where I figure I could pick up Biedrins.

Obviously im loaded in assists, so i figure i could move a guy like jameer, westbrook, or harris (whichever has more value)

what do you suggest I do, since I need to target 3's and Blocks in my needs?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Intro, I def like okur over Marion.

Po, I did, please read The Best Way to Play Fantasy post.

RW, on the surface I say no, but let's wait n see if Jamison gets dealt to cavs, if so then butler becomes huge!

Dave, melo n scola for Dirk, you don't really lose boards? Melo grabs below the sauce avg. Ink it if u can.

RW, I don't love it, it's even at best BUT like I said, if Jamison goes ur golden

    ReplyDelete
  42. Hey Thief, I don't know if you missed my post or just thought it was dumb.

    ReplyDelete
  43. he missed mine too

probably cuz i wrote about the raiders...

    ReplyDelete
  44. Kobe, My bad. I answer often through my Iphone so I miss a post every now and then. I like the idea of you movin Gasol and Galli for CP3, think he'd go for it? Otherwise, try straight Galli for Harris, that should help a lot.

Senn, try adding Brand to the first offer too, remember we be thievin here. Totally scrap the Gasol - Green offer, not enuff for you.

Pavel, Don't be in a rush, I think Nelson will have an immeidate impact and we can sell high after about two or three games in.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Hey Thief. Thanks for the reply.

The other day you thought my idea of trading Roy and Iggy for DWill and Butler was great. The trade went through and has now left me with a starting lineup of:

    D.Williams
    Wade
    Rondo
    Butler
    Nowitzki
    Garnett
    B.Lopez
    Brand
    Salmons
    Lou. Williams

    Bench: B.Gordon, Deng and Dunleavy.

    Sauce: 3's-.62, Pts-17.97 Reb-5.97 Ast-4.34 st-1.28 Blk-.83

Should I have held off? Personally I like the deal allot other than Broy having his best game for me on the night I trade him. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  46. Sorry about missin some posts guys, when I use my Iphone it's tough to catch em all.

    ReplyDelete
  47. RW, it's a moot point, your team is nasty LOL. I do like the deal, esp if jamison gets dealt, it's just that you might've been able to ask for a lil more (maybe he tosses in a duhon ya know?). But it's moot, the team you built is awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I hadn't heard that Jamison to GSW rumor. That would be nice for Butler and his fantasy owners no doubt. Quick question. Al Thornton is my waiver wire. Anybody on my roster worth dropping for him? I'm thinking of Dunleavy.

    ReplyDelete
  49. hey thief, who should i give up for these players, clearly I have to give Wade up, but who else to make this deal strait thievin'!

    The squad:
    Ridnour
    Wade
    Ilyasova
    West
    D.Lee
    Ray Allen
    Mayo
    Duhon
    Bibby
    W.Chandler
    BENCH: Hill, Taj Gibson, Shaq

I'm trying to get Kobe, Pierce, Beasley.
The three players that I just don't want to give up are Allen, D.Lee, Duhon, and West

    ReplyDelete
  50. RW, Cavs not GSW. And no, Blake, Camby, Kaman, all will get more time than and looks than Thornton. He's OK, but Dunleavy is a better option.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Yizzie, really? givin up on D Wade and sellin low here? OK If u want to, I guess add in Illyasova and maybe Bibby. But I think you're sellin Wade at the wrong time

    ReplyDelete
  52. yea, maybe I should wait on him, I just got excited about this trade. I'll definatly wait on it. Thanks from keeping me from going crazy lol
