Five Guys that Should NOT Be Available on Your Waiver Wire

I tend to view the league I play in to be about as competitive as it gets. Basketball is our short league, we have 12 managers (vs. 16 for the other two sports), but the league runs deep in experience. However even in this league there's a couple of guys that are sitting in the FA pool that just should not be there. I've currently got three 2-1 offers sitting on the trading block. It's a race between me landing a trade and these guys still being available. I like my odds.

If these guys are on your wire, you can confidently be doing the same. If better players are on your wire, you're probably in a smaller league, but that doesn't mean the ole 2-1 isn't available for you too.

***********Secret Shady Thief Trick Alert******************
sometimes, if I really want a guy, I'll add him to my team and drop my lowest level player so he goes on Waivers (particularly if I am high on waivers) to make sure I get to keep both players. Shhhhhh, Thief didn't tell you that one
***********************************************************

So these five guys are available on my FA wire, and I'd gladly (given the freed up space) roster any one of them. While they might not consistently produce like a starter, they are good enough as injury insurance (in roto) or spot starts (in H2H).

1. Al Thornton
Thornton will be a good player someday, mark my words. He just hasn't 'put it all together yet'. Still he's capable of dropping 20-30 points on any given night with chip ins in other categories. To me, there isn't much difference between him and Corey Maggette (who is gone in almost every league).
2. Leandro Barbosa
Leandro is merely a fill in for whatever injured player is on your FA wire. For some it's Kevin Martin or Louis Williams or even Michael Redd. If you have the roster space, you should have these guys. When healthy they are all starters, and why wait for someone else to grab him?
3. Tyson Chandler
In need of Boards and Blocks? What a cheap way to snag them! Sure TC's had a slow start to the season, sure he's streaky and sometimes doesn't show up, but when he is on HE IS ON. Just like Ben Wallace came alive, TC can come alive at any time.
4. Mike Conley
T.J. Ford aside, there should never be a starting point guard sitting on the FA wire. Assists are the most valuable category in Fantasy Basketball because, really, only PG's get them consistently. Conley has had plenty of solid performances and just needs some confidence and consistency. He'll get there.
5. Jarret Jack
I actually WAS holding Conley on my squad, and just dropped him for Jack (hence my little trick listed above). I hope to make a deal soon and replace the empty slot with Conley. ANYWAY, Jack represents that player who is getting a shot due to anothers (Calderon) injury and making the most of it (17,8,8 yesterday!). He should not be on a waiver wire, this is how some of the best players get discovered. Another guy getting a similar opportunity is Tyler Hansborough.

That about sums it up. If you see one of these guys, or someone better, sitting out on your wire, then GEAR UP THE TRADE MACHINE, and move a quick 2-1 before an opponent beats ya to it!

  2. I'd rather have Dampier than Chandler...TC is worthless without CP3. Especially right now...Last 3 games combined: 16pts, 8rebs, 1stl, 1blk People can hate on Damp all they want, but he is so much more valuable than TC this year. People still think TC's got it, but there's a reason New Orleans was trying to trade him away all last year and why they were willing to take on a huge contract like Okafor's.

I offered j.thompson for d.rose straight up, he rejected. His notables are iggy, r. lewis, lebron, haywood, dalembert, biedrins, and al harrington. is there anyway i can entice him to trade? he is in last place and not willing to trade...tell me what im doing wrong

    ReplyDelete
  4. anony, try parker and frye for Gilber Hibachi Arenas. Then grab Biedrins.

Alex, not going to disagree with you regarding TC vs. Dampier (what with Damp being in a contract year). It ain't about that, it's about having say David Lee and Erick Dampier or Chris Bosh and TC, you feel me?

You gotta get an email going with him and nail him down on a price for Rose. If he is just not gonna trade, tell him to GO FIND A NEW HOBBY!

  5. Alright, Ill send that trade. Do you know think I should take Garnet for Rondo though?

  7. hey this is Aaron-how are ya today? so i am not understanding your sneaky trick on waivers?are u saying if i am in a 12 man league and my waiver is 12 that there is still a way for me to get a guy on waiver if through i am 12?if so please tell me how there is a guy on waiver right now i want thanks so much

    ReplyDelete
  8. Shorty! Garnett for Rondo is a STEAL!

Mat, no worries about Brand bro. Whether he starts of comes off the pine, he'll still get his minutes. In fact, don't you like him better when Iverson and Dalembert are not on the court with him?

Aaron! What's up buddy! I'm just saying you can make add/drops to players to put them into waivers which delays when anyone can grab them. No big deal, just a sneaky trick is all. It's not a big game changer.

  9. Hey Thief

Your blog is amazing I think it will be pretty damn valuable throughout the season. I was wondering if you could offer me some tips on my team?

    I've got:
    Roy
    Granger
    Aldridge
    Ellis
    Arenas
    Jackson
    Ray Ray
    Charlie V
    Boozer
    Redd
    Arenas
    Thornton
    Iverson

Some of the big names on my FA list are Udrih, Biedrins, Brewer, Gomes, Ridnour.

My league is points based and I really need to find a solid center. Any suggestions?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Oh and to get granger I traded Deng and Noah hopefully I didn't get ripped off haha

    ReplyDelete
  11. this is a lil off topic, but what do you think about trading tier 2 players?

I am looking to solidify my team, my sauce is mediocre. Tell me what you think of this trade:
    GIVE: Wade, Hill
    GET: Rondo, Salmons, Jeff Green

    ReplyDelete
  12. Erik, what up, welcome! You should read the post Secret Sauce first. It'll tell you how to give me the info I need in order to figure out where your team is strong and where it's weak. Best info you can read!

BigPoppa, That's an OK trade. I mean, Wade is as close to Tier one as you can get, but you ARE getting 3 players back. Can you start all 3? Are they upgrades? If so, I can get behind your deal, otherwise I'd prefer to have Wade than to not.

    ReplyDelete
  13. all three are upgrades, but only because david west is bad.

tell me, is david west grabage? or trash? is he the trash man?
11 pts 4 rebs today? seriously? i drafted him in the second round. SECOND ROUND!! sry, if im going crazy, but he just has no trade value. =[

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yeah he's streaky. I have him too, so don't worry the minute he gets a run goin, I'm soundin the Sell Sell Sell alarm.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Amen brotha once he strings together a nice week, ima be makin my dough.

nice talkin to you man, love da site

oh and make sure you post some kind of thread to sell this man, so all us DWest owners can know what to expect in return, since you know it all!

  16. Hey man, I was just wondering what your thoughts on 2 breakout PG's are for the rest of the season-Tyreke Evans and brandon jennings. Which one would you rather have on your team? If you were to draft today for the rest of the season which one do you take first? Thanks a lot!

    ReplyDelete
  17. No worries Pops, I'll be postin!

Stodds, not a freaking clue. Need to see how they both react when redd/Martin come back. But today, I guess I'd take Evans.

    Anthony Randolph

    Salmons
    Stephen Jackson

    3's: .98
    rebs: 6.4
    Asts: 3.11
    Stls: 1.14

    too much or good trade?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Goose I'd love to see you pull that deal off. Wade is as close to Tier One as you can get.

Mat,, I owned Hibbert during the stretch where they gave him minutes and he put up Odenlike numbers. I was a big fan of Rou at GTown, and think he'll be a solid NBA player. So I say Hibbert, nothing against TC, but Roy is good. Don't dump Nate unless there's a really good FA guy out there. Wait to find out if/where he's gettin dealt to.

Pavel! How we doin! Too much bro, pull Brooks out and send it.

  24. Double Post. (Posted in 2 for 1 blog on accident)

Morning Thief. Looking at your list of players who shouldn't be on the waiver I got a laugh because all but one are FA's in my league. JJack was picked up just yesterday. I'm trying to move Deng for 3ball help but the guy wants Tyreke Evans for either salmons or Ben Gordon. He would also do Salmons and B.Gordon for Deng and Evans. This manager also has Arenas and I've thought about offereing up Evans and Deng for Gil and then picking up Beidrins. What do you think. Here is my roster:

    PG: Rondo, Evans, T. Parker
    SG: Wade, Broy
    SF: Iggyuodala, Deng, Morrow
    PF: Nowitzki, KG, Brand
    C: B. Lopez, Pryzbilli

After going over the sauce I have good numbers across the board other than 3pts made. I'm first in my league but If I could bring my 3's and FG% up I would dominate. Any thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  25. James, just to add, while I love Agent Zero, he can kill your fg%. Both salmons and Gordon are high fg% shooters who drop treys. That said, they're both slumping too......buy low!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Anony, read my Secret Sauce post, then run your numbers. Only then can I tell what you need and who you can deal.

    ReplyDelete
  27. should i add jameer? according to news, he will play next week.

    my team:
    c paul
    d rose
    t parker
    e gordon
    r hamilton
    m redd
    j howard
    j green
    g wallace
    a stoudemire
    c kaman
    b haywood
    k love

Also, should i hold on to amare? he's driving me nuts!

    ReplyDelete
  28. My Sauce #'s with the following starting lineup:
(3pts = .51) (Pts = 19.12) (Reb = 6.58) (Ast = 4.1) (St = 1.35) (Blk = .91) As you can see my threes are pretty bad right now. This is a 9 team roto league, non keeper.

    Rondo
    Wade
    Broy
    Iggy
    Dirk
    Garnett
    Lopez
    Brand
    Evans
    Deng

    Bench: Morrow, Pryz, T. Parker.

My deng for his Ben Gordon has been rejected. He wants Tyreke Badly and is willing to offer up Salmons and Gordon for my Evans & Deng. I just can't bring myself to make this deal. What do you think Thief?

    ReplyDelete
  29. What about Deng for Salmons straight up?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Anony, jameer is WAY too good to be on an FA wire. Way too good. As for Amare, dood this whole blog is about targeting frustrated owners and coaxing them to sell low. It's AMARE, he ain't hurt, just be patient, it's a loooong season.

James, helps so much to see the sauce doesn't it! Yeah you're def down in threes. What about deng and Parker for Gordon n salmons? Either way, if you have to do just deng for salmons, do it. I like Salmons to turn it around n you'll need his statline.

    ReplyDelete
  31. It really does help to see those numbers Thief. Everything looks gravy for me minus the three ball. I'm working on this deal right now. Ill keep you posted.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hey Thief. ALong with Barbosa and Thornton we also have Jamaal Crawford on the waiver. Is he somebody I should consider dropping Parker for? Or should I try to trade him first in a 2 for 1. Im thinking the latter.

    ReplyDelete
  33. oh and Dunleavy is also on the wire. Im considering a few guys and debating on weather to drop morrow, pryz or parker.

    ReplyDelete
  34. If I were you I'd have 2-1 offers out to everyone in my league, so I could free up space for those players. I don't advise add/drops in this case, all the guys you mention on your team are roster worthy too.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hi Thief,

Short Question, which players have the most potential moving forward.

    Elton Brand or Josh Howard

My team is not in need of blocks and rebounds.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Another question.

I was offer with Amare S. and A. Affalo for Brook Lopez and Baron Davis.

I want to know what your opinion is on this trade.

    ReplyDelete
  37. hey its Aaron again...
    how are ya
here is my sauce what is my next move?
    3pt-1.14
    pts-18.53
    reb-6.84
    ast-2.9
    steal-1.33
    blk-.85
    my team-
SG Manu Ginobili (SA - SG)
G Andre Miller (Por - PG)
SF Anthony Morrow (GS - SG,SF)
    PF --empty--
    F Channing Frye (Pho - PF,C)
    C Tim Duncan (SA - PF,C)
    C Ben Wallace (Det - PF,C)
Util Carl Landry (Hou - SF,PF)
Util Richard Hamilton (Det - SG,SF)
BN Zach Randolph (Mem - PF,C)
BN Dirk Nowitzki (Dal - PF)
BN Monta Ellis (GS - PG,SG)
BN Mike Dunleavy (Ind - SG,SF
    BN caron butler
those arent my bench players just how my roster was setup when i copy and pasted
so who should i trade for?i feel like i should be able to make a pretty decent move with my team
just not sure what direction i need to go

    ReplyDelete
  38. Fang, Brand and ask for more than affalo.

Aaron next up are Nash or Deron, try offering Frye and Randolph or Ellis. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  39. hey gabadoo its aaron.
i like your suggestion but problem is both of those managers arent very active and the times i have proposed trades to them i never get a response. so any other suggestions? that is the thing i hate about public leagues u cant do anything bout inactive managers

    ReplyDelete
  40. Me again Thief. After going back and forth he has offereed his Salmons and B.Gordon for my Tony Parker and Tyreke Evans. (He doesn't want Deng) Again, I hate parting with Reke but I feel this might really help my team in the long run. Thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  41. On a side note if I make this trade technically it leaves me with 1 PG in Rondo but I have guys like Wade and Roy who are PG eligible. Do you view this as an issue? I think my assists should still be good with Rondo, Wade, Iggy and Roy.

    ReplyDelete
  42. James, plain and simple, if you don't want to deal reke, then don't. That said....

Don't fall in love with your players (cause they don't care if you win your league!)

    ReplyDelete
  43. Fair enough but would you make that deal in my position?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Yeah buddy, I would. It ain't easy cause of reke, but you get 2 high fg% Trey shooters n u need them. It's a deal of necessity an we ARE sellin Reke high here n buyin salmons n Gordon low. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  45. dampier is a better choice then tyson. hes been decent so far

    ReplyDelete
  46. Yup I'd have said Dampier, but he's not available in my league...

    ReplyDelete
  47. they are both about 40% owned so he should be available in many leagues

    ReplyDelete
