When making a trade in fantasy sports, there are two parts of the equation: the guy you trade and the guy you get. While reading my blog will help you with one half of that trade, the other side is equally important. In order to lend a helping hand, I've created the top three TIERS of players in the NBA in terms of fantasy right now. The idea here is to know what you're getting back, or giving up in a deal. The very best trades involve selling a Tier 2 player High, and getting a Tier 1 player back. Or selling two Tier 3 players for a Tier 1 player. However you don't want to be selling a Tier 2 for a Tier 3, that's downgrading your team. Anyway, on to the lists:
TIER ONE - THE MUST HAVES
-In every league, every sport, there is one or two guys who are SO FAR AHEAD of everyone else, they are in a league of their own. They tend to dominate almost every category. It is a major advantage to have one of them (or both) and if you don't, you must try to get one-
LEBRON JAMES
CHRIS PAUL
TIER TWO - THE OLE RELIABLES
-These guys aren't nearly as dominant as Tier One players, but they are very consistent year in and year out and they offer outstanding stats usually in three or four categories-
DWAYNE WADE
KOBE BRYANT
DIRK NOWITZKI
DANNY GRANGER
KEVIN DURANT
PAU GASOL
AMAR'E STOUDEMIRE
CHRIS BOSH
KEVIN GARNETT
DERON WILLIAMS
STEVE NASH
TIM DUNCAN
DWIGHT HOWARD
GERALD WALLACE
CARLOS BOOZER
JASON KIDD
KEVIN MARTIN
TIER THREE - The Roster Fillers
Hopefully your team owns a Tier One player, a couple Tier Two's and then a bunch of these guys. They tend to be streaky, they can play like a top dawg or go on a dead streak.
Al JEFFERSON
BRANDON ROY
CHAUNCEY BILLUPS
CARON BUTLER
ANTAWN JAMISON
JOSE CALDERON
ANDRE IGUODALA
DEVIN HARRIS
JOE JOHNSON
VINCE CARTER
PAUL PIERCE
BROOK LOPEZ
GILBERT ARENAS
DAVID WEST
TROY MURPHY
RASHARD LEWIS
JOSH SMITH
LAMARCUS ALDRIDGE
BARON DAVIS
MONTA ELLIS
MARCUS CAMBY
DAVID LEE
STEPHEN JACKSON
RAY ALLEN
DERRICK ROSE
JAMEER NELSON
MO WILLIAMS
ELTON BRAND
CARMELO ANTHONY
JASON RICHARDSON
RAJON RONDO
That's roughly the top 50 guys. If I missed one, don't kill me, you should be able to tell where he belongs. Most importantly, my goal is to get as many of these guys on my squad. If I am dealing one of them, it's only because I expect to get AT LEAST one back in a trade. When I say sell Dirk High, it's to get CP3. When I say sell Josh Smith High, it's to get Dwight Howard or Carlos Boozer. When I say sell Danillo Gallinari high, it's to get whoever you can from any of those lists. The higher the better.
Always know your tiers, in every sport. You NEVER deal a player from one of these lists without getting back at least one from these lists. Else you are hurting your team.
Now go do some Thievin balla!

Where's Brandon Roy??
ReplyDeleteDid I miss him? Good catch. Tier Two
ReplyDeletetony parker?
ReplyDeleteNo Parker, he's good especially in real life. But he's just OK in fantasy.
ReplyDeleteIs Monta Ellis considered a sell high, or a buy low?
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think of this trade: Chris Bosh, Danilo Gallinari for Rashard Lewis, Amar'e Stoudemire? Should I just keep Bosh?
ReplyDeleteAnony, The jury is out on Monta. I don't know what to think of him yet as there isn't a great big body of work to judge from. In my league, he just got deal for Gallinari and Marion...I'd rather have Monta.
ReplyDeleteAlex, I LOVE that trade for you. Amar'e is at least as good as Bosh, Lewis BLOWS AWAY Gallinari (similar stat lines too)
Doctor Doctor, I think I just F****D up!
ReplyDeleteI just gave away Bargnani and Frye for LAmarcus ALdridge
My new team:
brooks
e. gordon
jennings
rondo
granger
butler
webster (just picked him up for dampier)
jason thompson
elyasova
beasley
ty thomas
ant. randolph
Aldridge
lopez
ben wallace
Thabo Selfaloosha
My new Numbers are:
pts: 15.375
3's: .98
rebs: 6.4
Asts: 3.11
Stls: 1.14
Blks: .73
Did i get done up on this trade or is the value of frye fast decreasing and lamarcus is on the rise? But it just seems from current avgs that I just messed up...what do you think!?
so it's ok to trade melo for amare straight up? tnx
ReplyDeleteGoing by your Tier, Lopez straight up for Duncan is good?
ReplyDeletePavel, go look at Aldridges line tonight, then pat yourself on the back for a job well done!
ReplyDeleteAnony1, if you're giving up Melo, you should get Amar'e easy, maybe try to squeeze out a little more too. People LOVE Melo right now, capitalize on that. But if you walked away with just Amar'e for Melo, I'd say you still made out.
Anony2, you mean you give Lopez and get Duncan? Yeah, def, for several reasons. Durability, consistency, and with Duncan hitting FT's at a higher than normal clip, well he is a complete package.
I need blocks and he needs assists. Should I give up B. Davis for Noah? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteHey this kid offered me baron davis for tony parker. here is my sauce sadly..
ReplyDeletePTS:13.82
3S:.742
BOARDS:5.378
AST:3.07
ST:.942
BLKS:.657
should i accept?
Absolutely, we know BD is an injury risk, but really so is Parker. BD is an awesome fantasy player. Hit accept and pat yourself on the back. Good deal.
ReplyDeleteBandoogie, missed you there. Boy I wish I could deal Noah and get BD. Hold out for more bro, unless you're desperate and need to move now.
ReplyDeleteOkay, guy didn't accept Bosh, Gallo for Shard, Amare...I'm thinking of countering with Gallo, Bosh, Okafor for Shard, Amare, Ray Allen. What do you think?
ReplyDeleteStart lower, okafor n gallinari for just Amare. Time is on your side. Thieving takes patience.
ReplyDeleteGabadoo....are you still not feeling good about Gallinari? I'm a die hard knicks fans and have been watching him get better and better every game. He had 11 boards the other night to go along with 2 steals and a block...plus the 3s and decent percentages.
ReplyDeleteI got offered Josh Smith and Gallinari for Dwight Howard....14 team, 9 cat, H2H league.
Po, it's not that I don't like him. Not that I don't respect the talent. I just think this is his peak level. I can't fathom him being better than this. Look at his averages, I can't see him being BETTER than say, Rashard Lewis. Can you? Why not deal him right now for Lewis and take the downside out of it all?
ReplyDeletehey its Aaron how are ya today?
ReplyDeleteSo i traded marcus camby and shawn marion for johnny flinn and john salmons what do u think?
hey its aaron... here is how my sauce changed from that trade
ReplyDeletebefore after
3pt .63 .82
pts 12.2 12.96
rebs 6.62 5.72
ast 3.2 3.41
steal.95 .96
blk 1.32 .92
If I trade Harris and Bunum for tier one
ReplyDeleteIs it a good deal?
Absolutely!
ReplyDeletehey this is Aaron
ReplyDeletei was thinking about it earlier u should do a list of most eligible free agents i think that would help alot of guys i mean i know every league is different but i see alot of people wondering this so if u did the top ten free agents u should consider or something just a suggestion
I just offered Jennings, D. West and E. Okafor for L. James and C. Landry. If he doesn't accept do you think I should sweeten the pot with D. Williams, D. Harris or J. Johnson instead Jennings?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the Tier 1, 2, and 3 ranks, ever think of doing a top 100?
ReplyDeleteAnony1, read my latest post.
ReplyDeleteAnony2, I don't work by straight ranks, just tiers. However I CAN try to create more tiers to cover 100 players down the road.
Thanks Gabadoo, keep up the great work!
ReplyDeletewhat do you think about this trade
ReplyDeletei give
wade/JT/kaman
i get
kobe/duncan
we actually got a deal done where i gave
ReplyDeletewade, kaman, ariza, thompson, & harris
nd got
kobe, duncan, billups, nelson, and mcgrady
how did i do
In what tier will you place; Aaron Brooks and Loul Deng?
ReplyDeleteIsmael, let's put it this way, if I owned them I'd b packaging them up together in a trade to try an score a tier 2 or 3 player. They are somewhere in tiers 4 and 5.
ReplyDeleteIn my league there are bidding Kobe. I bit Melo and Deng, how does that sound?
