Buy Low - Ben Gordon - Detroit Pistons

Thief’s been working hard so you don’t have to! Boy do I have a nice buy low guy right now; I’m sitting here working my own trade wire to get him on the cheapy cheap myself. I’m talking about none other than Ben Gordon. There are quite a few things working in unison that make Ben a great opportunity, especially for those who do not look closely at the numbers. To begin with, he’s just coming off an ankle injury. Now I’m not sure where the rumor started, but for some reason people view ole Ben as an injury risk. It’s just not true, in fact prior to this season Ben missed an average of 2 games a year! However he did miss 10 games in ’07, but that hardly makes a player an injury risk. Still, chances are the guy who owns him in your league is concerned that he’ll go down again, and is anxious to deal him off.

Second, he comes off the bench. This has been the case since his early days in the NBA. Who cares! He averages over 30 minutes a game which is what really counts. In fact, sometimes (like in Ben’s case) it’s better that he comes off the bench because it means that when he is in the game, he is the focal point for the offense. Yet, without a doubt, the owner of Ben in your league will discount his game because he doesn’t start.

Finally, Ben is down in one key statistical area that WE know is going to bounce back in the near future. Let’s take a look at the numbers…

BUY LOW – Ben Gordon – G – Detroit Pistons

CAT 2009 Career

PTS 18.5 18.5

AST 2.8 3.0

3’s 1.5 1.9

REB 2.4 3.0

STL 0.8 0.8

BLK 0.1 0.2

TO’s 1.7 2.4

FT% 82.5 85.7

FG% 43.8 43.7

3PT% 34.2!!! 41.2!!!

I added that last line in there to show you all what we’re keying on. Over his entire career (this being his sixth year) Ben has shot between 40.5% and 43.5% from the 3 point line, dropping an average of almost 2 per game. This year his accuracy is down 7%! However his attempts are still sitting right on his career average too. This can only be explained by one cause, luck. As luck would have it, thus far, some of his shots just haven’t dropped. And as luck usually goes, that will turn around by season ends. Lucky for us it hasn’t happened yet as Ben was only 4-15 in his last game from the field and 1-5 from outside. Perfect time to buy low.

About that injury he had…… Glad you asked! Ben had a sprained ankle, if we discounted every NBA player that sprained their ankle, we’d have no players left on our team. Its basketball and these things happen, nothing lingering, nothing to worry about. Might take a week to shake off the rust, but I have no doubt he’ll be back to dropping shots like it’s his business. Looking over the Sauce, you can expect Ben to help you out in 3’s, points, and FT%. His assists, steals and FG% are pretty neutral, and you should expect a small drop in TO’s and Blocks. Typical guard stuff.

Remember ballaz, it’s all about who we deal to get ole Ben to make this trade worth it. I’d love to see you move guys like Beno Udrih or Channing Frye to snag him. Trying to move a big instead? What about Brendan Haywood or Erick Dampier? Still yet, don’t shy off those 2- 1 or 2 -2 deals to bring him home.

One last note here, remember you need to be receiving these posts via email in order to get the password to access the SS calculator. If you are receiving them via email (it can take up to an hour after the post goes up), it will be below. If not, you can sign up at any of the various links on this blog. Also, do note, the calculator does NOT use just current stats but also incorporates historical stats and a couple of other ‘tweaks’ to account for specific factors. For instance Rookies are tilted a bit down, Old timers are too, and if a player has been injured we account for that too (whether it be this year or in a past year). So having the most recent stats won’t help, and I’ll update the spreadsheet weekly (which will be more than enough). Also do note that the password will change each week, gotta make sure that only true readers get access. Now get out there and DOMINATE!

  1. Hey Thief,

Still nothing after subscribing via Yahoo. Subscribing to a specific post did the trick last night so I'll stick to that until the Yahoo pans out...

How's Stephen Curry to nab Ben Gordon for a buy low?

  9. Got the e-mail, thanks a million thief! for the calculator, we only enter our "best" players on one night? As in, if every player was playing who would we put in our line-ups that day? oh, and is there a way that we can enter our league size or no?

  10. Thief, I'm looking to deal Harrington. He's too inconsistent for my taste and being a top 3 team in treys I would like to improve in blocks. I need at least 3 centers on my team. Any ideas for trade options involving him or pairing him with someone else.

    Sauce (H2H, 10 team):

    Points - 17.39
    Boards - 6.15

  11. Phil, pair him with granger n target pau or Amare. If you walk away with a 2-2, all the better. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  12. unfortunately we have one unactive owner in our leauge that owns both pau and amare, any other ideas?

  13. Yizzie, I honestly haven't looked much at Ojs numbers. But I don't know that we can call him a sell high yet. Gordon should fill some of those holes cheaply.

Stodds, best players, yes. If you like you can put them all on too, I just don't think it makes as much sense. No need to adjust for league size, the numbers are remarkably close for leagues with 10-14 teams.

Phil, yeah call him on the phone lol. Otherwise try for Josh smith, but def get a 2-2 back.

  14. Hey thief, I'm 0-9 in a 12 team cats league. I've got my 3 keepers set and am now basically trading for value as we can trade players for draft picks in the off-season. I have Derrick Rose as my 4th best player, been offered Vince Carter and Grant Hill for him. Since I'm not making the playoffs your secret sauce doesn't really matter. I'm thinking no cuz Rose would be better trade bait as a keeper for someone than Rose would be. On the other hand this is great value and I may be able to package Carter/Hill for someone. What do you think?

  21. i have a team full of ok guards (as you might know):
harris, rondo, lou williams, jennings, brooks, salmons, kmart, stephen jackson

according to your suace my team needs rebs and blocks.

so my friend in the league has a good team of bigs:
kg, d.west, nene, perkins...and also our boy ben gordon

so i want to offer a 2 for 2 or a 3 for 2 where I get a big and gordon. whats my best bet to thieve??

    as always thanks!

  22. thief! i read that you were high on blake griffin, even though you dont like rookies that much. what stats do you project once he returns?

  23. woozy, you watch him in college? I expect a double double machine. Something like David Lee's numbers.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Campos, that's PERFECT!

Mike, I am right, and I'll bet you could bring back something like Deron Williams if timed right.

Pavel, try KG and Ben for Jennings, Brooks and Salmons. See how it goes. if he says no, ask him if he would like to counteroffer... good luck

  25. thanks thief. 2 things tho...arent I losing a lot of 3's (3/game even if counting gordon)? (as well as some decent assists)

but also, how about kg's durability. you know the coaching staff tends to shut down their players later in the season.

  27. I won't be getting a top 10-15 player in my league for Carter thief. Which is why I'm iffy on this deal, our league is "stud-obsessed" so you think it's still worth dealing rose for Carter/hill.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hey Thief! I just figured out how to get the sauce calculator and I plugged in my players!

I noticed it says, only put your best players.? I'm kind of confused.

    My league has these positions.
    PG,SG,G,SF,PF,F,C,C,Util,Util,BN,BN,BN

All positions stats count except for the BN. I can switch the lineup for every day and get stats out of every one of my players, except for the rare occasion where I have more than 10 people playing.

Should I leave out my worst 3 players or just put all of my players in?

If I left out my worst 3, it would leave out, for example, Chris Duhon, who I picked up to help me in assists.

  29. little off topic thief but im in ther super bowl this week. need some start sit input

    ppr 1 point per catch

I was thinking about trading Dampier and Jason Terry for Ben Gordon and Elton Brand. What do you think?

  31. What's up THief.

I have been working hard on a 2 for 1 with no luck. There are two guys on the waiver I have interest in. Those guys are Charlie V and Ron Artest. I would be dropping Dampier for him.

  37. Senn, I think it makes more sense to leave them out and focus on building up your core, but it's your call.

Mike, I think VC will go on a stud run but if the league is stubborn on trades then stick with Rose.

Mamba, go grant and wells. I do expect moss to play.

    Ak, love it, bigtime.

J, lol I'd say it's worth it for Charlie but not for Ron (who's injured too).

Al, use the player list on the raw data sheet. He's there.

    Eric, mike conley.

Guys, I'll put the password in the next comment, an if u get comments via email you'll see it. Then I'm gonna delete the comment. Hope this helps.

  40. Thief.. I asked the owner of Steve Nash who he would want for him...

he said he needs a SF and would be willing to work out a 2+2 for Nash + someone else for a Pierce and a Broy...

I don't really want to give up broy, but i'm ok letting go of pierce.

If i do give up broy, who should i get in return at the least..

the rest of his team looks like this
    M ellis
    steph curry
    arenas
    gallinari
    al jefferson
    david lee
    brook lopez
    marc gasol
    biedrins
    chris paul
    erick dampier
    eric gordon

your v1.2 sauce calculator says i'm negative in all categories, but only dangerously low in rebounds..

my league is a h2h 9cat league with only 8 teams. I'm thinking of just giving up on rebounds and going after assists and 3's/steals maybe?

    what do you think?

  43. THief, I just made a deal that I think you would call straight thieving. I gave up D. Will, A. Miller, Turkolugue for D. Harris, Joe Johnson, and B. Gordon. I want to spin D. Harris and get A. Jamison. Do you think that is a good deal? I will then have 3 of rotos 4 players you had on your sight. I want J. Rich as well and I have an offer in for he and Redd, woudl you still go after Redd? I am giving the guy Delonte West and David West for Redd and J. Rich. I am not sure he will pull the trigger. If he doesn't what two out of this group should I offer him for J Rich and Redd: T. Ariza, Okur, J Green, CDR, L. Williams, P. Pierce, R Hibbert, E. Dampier? I also want to get C. Butler because I need steals for my sauce, who of those guys should offer C. Butler?
    Thanks, thieving will continue.

    L Williams
    Joe Johnson
    J Nelson
    R Hibbert,

Also I can not get the sauce calculator. I am signed up to receive tracks by e-mail and have received nothing. Can you send the password to me at lillisryan@hotmail.com.
