The Book of Basketball by Bill Simmons

I have a wonderful wife with a passion for sports. I'm a lucky guy, but more on that later. She got the The Book of Basketball by Bill Simmons for Christmas. It comes highly touted, I'll review the book as I read it myself and share any good tidbits. Here's a snippet from the Wall Street Journal Review of the book:

In what passes for structure, Mr. Simmons offers a brief (for him) history of the league. Then he "corrects" every mistaken MVP award the NBA ever handed out. (When Boston's Dave Cowens won it in 1973, he says, Milwaukee's Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was robbed.) Then he imagines every detail of a new and improved Basketball Hall of Fame, naming the 96 players who belong there and offering an analysis of each selection. Then he ranks the top 20 teams of all time (No. 1: the 1986 Celtics; No. 2: the 1996 Chicago Bulls). Finally, he conjures up the perfect 12-man roster to face a team of Martians with the fate of Earth on the line—with the 1985 version of Magic Johnson passing to a 1992 vintage of Mr. Jordan and the 2003 Tim Duncan rebounding.

Looks like a fun and yet educational read. Merry Christmas all!

  1. Yo thief, merry christmas!! I drafted a new team the other day, but it was quite a disaster i think. Take a look: the league is 18 team h2h with some funky cats: pts, DREB, OREB, assists, steals, blocks, 3pm, FTM, FGM (no percentages). there are 5 starters and 5 bench. My team is

    pg- gilbert arenas
    sg-john salmons
    sf-caron butler
    pf-antwan jamison
    c- dwight howard
    bench-jeff green
    bench-anthony morrow
    bench-channing frye
    bench-mario chalmers
    bench-chris douglas-roberts

    the sauce:
    Points: 15.55
    Boards: 5.84
    Assists: 2.5 !!!
    Treys: 1.27
    Steals: 1.21
    Blocks: .67
    FTM: 3.01
    FGM: 5.64

for the boards sauce number, i just combined each players offensive and defensive number and added them all together and averaged them (i used all 10 guys in the sauce) any ideas for improvement??

  5. What up Thief, Do you like giving up Marion and Iverson for Pierce and Kidd? Is that enough or should I use Rashard Lewis instead of Marion?

  8. Y4, try just Marion and Iverson for Pierce, and consider yourself golden if it's accepted.

Carlo, love em both. However you can rid yourself of Danny G at solid value, go with it.
