The Big Man Down Low Specialist

Well we've covered the offense pretty effectively with our first two posts on specialists. Remember, if you're short in treys, Peja is a cheap way to shore that up. He should be either on your WW, or sitting on an opponents bench, ripe for an easy trade. Likewise if assists are where you're hurting, look no further than Mr. Duhon, also a nice cheap source for ya. But what about the other side of the court?

Generally boards and blocks come hand in hand, if you have a guy that gets a lot of one, you're going to get a solid contribution in the other. But there are some big men that offer the Boards and just don't give you the accompanying blocks. Think of guys like Troy Murphy, Carlos Boozer, and David Lee. Now sure you can run out and try to work a deal involving these guys to work a shot blocker in return, or you can hit the WW (or look on your opponents bench) and grab this source of cheap Boards and Blocks: Samuel Dalembert.

Some readers saw this category coming and expected to see either Ben Wallace or Erick Dampier, both those guys work here as well but both would be more expensive to get than good ole Sammy D. Remember the idea here is that you hae a team that is solid in POINTS, maybe your sauce is around 17. Likewise, your down in both boards and blocks, and rather than making the big deal, Sammy D can be all you need. Let's take a look at the numbers:

Samuel Dalembert
CAT 2009
PTS 6.3
REB 8.3!!!
AST 1.3
STL 0.4
BLK 2.0!!!
FT% 80%!!!
FG% 44.8

Look, he isn't the next great thing, but think in terms of sauce. Your points go from 17 to 16, your dimes drop from say 3.7 to 3.5, your boards go way up, your blocks go way up, your FT% is solid, and I can tell you Sammy D is shooting below and scoring below his career averages, so there's is a little upside too.

It's all about the deal here folks. If you're in the position where you need big man stats, rather than hunting for Dwight or KG or Brook Lopez, don't be afraid to stop gap with Sammy D. Look over your squad, find the guy with the least value, and offer him to Sammy's owner, chances are he'll gladly take it.

I'll be around all night for trade talk.

  1. Hey Thief, here are my sauce numbers. What are your thoughts? I did one for my starters and a separate one for my bench. It's a 20 team keeper h2h pts. I didn't do 3pts because it's not counted in the league.
    starters:
    Monta Ellis
    Allen Iverson
    Rashard Lewis
    Al Horford
    Chris Bosh

    starters sauce:
    pts= 18.3
    ast= 3.0
    reb= 6.7
    stl= 1.0
    blk= .6

    Bench:
    Kyle Lowry
    Daniel Gibson
    Wilson Chandler
    J.R. Smith (traded G.Hill for him. Smart move?)
    Quentin Richardson
    Shawn Marion
    Carl Landry
    Ben Wallace

    Bench Sauce:
    pts= 10.6
    ast= 1.9
    reb= 5.0
    stl= .9
    blk= .6

  2. It's ironic you post this because Sammy D was just dropped in my league a few days ago. (9 team roto) He will be an FA tomorrow as I don't see anybody picking him up. I already have Brand in tow but could use a big on my bench. I only have one guy I would consider dropping and again that's dunleavy. My only concers are having Brand and the emergence of Speights. Thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  3. Y4, what's up playa. Yeah I like the starters, not the bench. I like JR, Marion and Wallace on there. I think you can do better at PG and better than Landry. For PG, maybe go for Duhon? For C, maybe Okafor?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Yeah I def thought about the whole Brand, dalembert, speights thing. No doubt Speights doesn't help Sammy D's numbers, but I figure that they'll lean less on speights goin forward to not risk reinjury. I'll guess Sammy sees north of 25 minutes a game, and shouldn't have trouble maintaining his current production. Is it pretty? No. But effective.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Who should I trade for Duhon and Okafor? That guy with Okafor has C.Paul, Butler, Love, L.Williams, Ty Thomas and Kev.Martin. Should I put some kind of package together? The guy with Duhon has Billups, Garnett, K.Perkins, Biedrins, Redd.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Y4, how bout Marion and AI for Okafor and Martin? Also, try Biedrins and Duhon for Landry and Q-Rich. Good Luck!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Do you think that would be enough for Okafor and Martin? Okafor has been doing good since the return of Paul and Martin should be coming back soon right?

    ReplyDelete
  8. i get: joe johnson and battier

    i give: pierce and curry

    shud i do it? or is it better to keep my depth. i just beat the number 1 team with the team i showed u before, so is this worth it for me?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Y4, is it enough for me? NOPE. But hopefully it's enough for him, we need to be THIEVIN!

    Lucky, you don't make out in that deal. Walk away.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Good point. I made the offers. Let's see what happens.

    ReplyDelete
  11. im not sure if itll make a difference but i just picked up hinrich, so id essentiially not be losing in ast or pts. idk cuz jj is one of the best all around players. im not sure if hinrich for bayless makes a difference but i wana be sure. cuz u said offer pierce and a bench guy for roy, but i think jj is more valuable IMO. curry is a bench player so i just wana make sure i got the facts straight. u sure i shudnt do it? id be more comfortable if u explained why i shudnt do it.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Lucky, even tho u couldn't have made it clearer, I still read it backwards with u gettn pierce, sorry long day. I agree JJ dominates pierce. He's one of my fav fantasy bball players. And Battier is an awesome guy to have as he rounds off a statline. I'm not huge on curry so I like that you're dealin him. Good stuff following up on that. ESP with pierces value an fg% droppin lately. INK IT!

    Sup fantasy thief its Danny! Im wonderin what i could do here...this one kid wants ray allen for his mo williams, he also wants joakim noah for marc gasol.

    These other two guys are fighting for Pau Gasol.
    One kid offered me michael beasley,al thorton and andre miller for Pau. That trade seems very wack. This other kid is waitin to offer me a trade for Pau in a bit. For now...what should i do wit joakim noah and ray allen??

    ReplyDelete
  14. Whoa Danny, we gots lots of work to do here. First off, I like you dealin ray for mo, but keep Noah and be sure to check in here before any Pau deals. Also Jack, jones, pietrus, and hill have got to be upgraded for you to have a shot. For starters, offer Ray Allen an Dahntay for Mo and ??? Some solid buy low like duhon or a specialist like peja.

    ReplyDelete
  15. My AI and Marion for his Okafor and Martin was declined. He countered with my Ellis and Horford for his Okafor and Martin. I don't think that's good for me. Should I counter or just forget it? It also said in the trade details that an undisclosed player will be conditionally dropped. I'm not sure why that would be put in the trade. Do you know?

    ReplyDelete
  16. the only buy low specialist on his team is probably troy murphy. should i do that?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Y4, he's brutal. Reject the deal an tell him yours stands if he changes his mind but his was insulting. Tell him AI = okafor in value an Marion = an injured keV mart. Then Tell him Ellis dominates Martin, horf dominates okafor, and you don't appreciate insulting offers!

    Danny............uhhhhhhhh.........Troy Murphy might be a bit much to ask for, even for the thief!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. ahhhhhh! lol, hmmm thats the closest he has to a buy low specialist..should i just deal mo for allen?

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'll do that. If he doesn't go for it what other trades do you think I should try to make?

    ReplyDelete
  20. sorry i meant "what trade with pau should i propose?"

    ReplyDelete
  21. allright i told that one kid that the pau trade was wack. he told me 2 send one and hell take a look 2moro. Hes a pretty cheap kid so idkk what hed say. he has:

    MONTA ELLIS
    BRANDON ROY
    RUSSEL WESTBROOK
    RAYMOND FELTON
    DANILO GALLINARI
    AL JEFFERSON
    MICHAEL BEASLEY
    AL THORTON
    BROOK LOPEZ
    AL HORFORD
    ANDRE MILLER
    BEN WALLACE
    MARVIN WILLIAMS
    BLAKE GRIFFIN

    What should i offer?

    ReplyDelete
  22. danny, try jefferson and beasley?

    Y4, see if the other trade goes thru first. If it does, this guy will get impatient and jealous and be more likely to jump on a deal with you. Nothin works better than tellin one manager to F off while immediately INKING a deal with another guy!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Aight, I'll let you know what happens.

    ReplyDelete
  24. thieff, i got a few deals lined up wit my friend.

    this one, is something he would definitly do : my deron, ariza for his d harris and josh smith

    im trying to get him to do this: my deron ariza and thaddeus
    for his eric gordon josh smith and d harris.

    if he doesnt want to do that should i take the first offer???

    of if he would do the second, should i even do it and just stay put????

    10 team h2h:

    my team:

    chris paul
    deron williams
    jose calderon
    lou williams
    j riich
    ariza
    mayo
    deng

  25. So my sjax trade is going to get vetoed (the guy who is running the league posted "good luck getting that trade through).

    also in my other league the granger, beasley, harris for dwight and deron got rejected. Dude says he wont trade deron...and sends me ron artest and chalmers for granger, sayin if i dont like it he is good with his team for several weeks..whatever

    i do have a homie in that league who values jennings and brooks (jennings a lil more) and has a good team full of bigs but he really needs 3's and assists and i need a big man who blocks. Should i try to deal jennings for kg or west or nene?

    what do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  26. p.s.

    you know i mostly agree with what you come up with, but sammy d?? Dudes value is incredibly inconsistent and he doesn't really fit in the offense in philly. Speights also crushes his value. While he has had good seasons in the past (and ive had him in those years), id def stay away from him this year

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hey Thief,
    I'm wanting to sell high on Tyreke Evans thinking that this is the max he could possibly be this season and that is without the "rookie wall" and the return of K.Martin, hence I wanna ship him. Trouble is I'm not so sure exactly what type of player to target.
    This is my sauce (why don't you include turnovers btw?)
    pts 15.17
    3s 0.93
    reb 6.37
    ass 3.34
    stl 1.15
    blk 0.82

    My team includes
    aaron brooks,
    jo johnson
    t.evans
    manu G
    Iggy
    josh smith
    troy murphy
    brook lopez
    kevin love
    ak 47
    dalmbert
    thad young
    cj watson

    the latter 3 spending most of the time on the bench.

    I was originally thinking of a B.Roy (but that seemed too late) a Rudy Gay, Antawn Jamison, or involving T.Evans in a 2 for 1 trade to snag a 2nd or 1st rounder.

    Appreciate the advice

    ReplyDelete
  28. O ya, forgot to add as well if it helps:
    its h2h 12 team league

    thanks again!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. this is my sauce.. i'm in a 20 team h2h league

    ppg=16.8
    rpg=6.4
    ast=4.46
    3s=0.58
    stls=1.34
    bloks=0.82

    my roster is this

    starter

    pg cp3
    sg jason terry
    sf josh smith
    pf david lee
    c jermaine oneal

    bench
    blake griffin
    varejao
    will bynum
    casspi
    taj gibson
    pietrus
    ilyasova
    stojakovic

    as you can see, i have problems in rebs and 3s... the average sauce is 6.48 but i only have 6.40 which is below the limit.. the average treys is 1.02 but i only have 0.58. i am really nervous to start stojakovic because the free throws made,ppgs,stls and asst will come down for the sacrifice of the 3s and rebs...

    if i will start stojakovic this is my sauce

    ppg=15.96
    rebs=6.78
    assist=4.02
    3s=0.78
    stls=1.2
    bloks=0.82

    as you can see, my numbers become average from your advised sauce stats but benching a 90% owned jason terry, i think, is not a great move and i may just want to trade him to get another sg if that will just happen.. so can you help me figure out who should i start and if i should just put terry on the block?

    P.S= my opponent has camby,amare,odom,artest,arenas on the upcoming week.. if i just rebound and blok like that , i might be pawned on that categories and i am not so sure if i can easily take the points if arenas will go to a 30 point game again and phx has 4 games this week.. so please help me and i think, brook lopez can fix all of my problems if i can get him so can u please include who can be the players i should trade for him?

    i'm so thankful that you post these kind of blogs.. keep it up thief and i want to thank you for all of this!!! god bless bro.. ^^

  30. Good Morning Thief!
    So u really think Sam D of Phily is a good pick up? I have him on one of my teams and i havent been impressed i personally favor Dampier if u are gonna have one of those guys on your team.Now if u are willing to spend a little more Big Ben is great he rebounds block and he adds in steals but he wont be found on very many FA lists lol.
    Next question have u started your baseball blog yet? I thought of a few ideas for that.Are you gonna do a baseball tier? Also before the season starts how hard would it be to do a sample draft list?Like maybe the type of players you should go for the first 5 rounds or so?Also i personally would be very thankful if u did some sorta list for the minor league i signed last night for a baseball league with a minor league mini roster i am clueless on minor league players so i would find this very very helpful thanks very much looking forward to your response

    ReplyDelete
  31. LA, you're on the right track, but we gotta swing the deal in yo favor. Try Deron n Lou for smith n Harris. Maybe also add to that Thad n E Gordon.

    Pavel, Jennings for D West would b nice. And again, I'm NOT sayin Sammy D is a stud player. But if your team is in need of boards n blocks, and you've hot say Mike Conley or Luke Ridnour is ur starting lineup, then I'm sayin he's better for u to have. You disagree?

    Lex, think you could pull of reke n AK for Jamison? That'd be a sweet fit for ya

    Wb, workin on the baseball stuff as we speak. I'll roll it out here early January. I agree dampier is at least as good an option as Sammy D, but he's not as easy to get. These posts r about cheap guys, ya dig?

    Ansel, I think u gotta cash in David lee my man. Pair him up in a 2-2 or 3-3 with 2 bench players. Target lopez if u want, or try to target depth ya know? Something like Lee, Illyasova n Casspi for John Salmon, Ben Gordon and LaMarcus Aldridge, you follow?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hey Thief, thanx for the advice :)
    I think I could pull that off. The guy with Jamison also happens to have Arenas and I read your advice on Arenas being a classic buy low candidate. Any suggestions to take both of them on or would that not be advisable?

    Thanks man

    ReplyDelete
  33. should i try and get josh smith and d harris for my deron and thaddeus??

    is harris going even pick it up?

    i have chris paul, jose, and lou will as well

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hey, Thief
    Should I try and trade Tyreke Evans and Danilo Gallinari (or maybe Tyreke Evans and Jeff Green?) for Kevin Durant and then pick up either one of these four - Blake Griffin, Thaddeus Young, Roy Hibbert or Anthony Morrow (all of them are currently FA)?

    My team (ten team roto league):

    PG - Jason Kidd
    SG - Tyreke Evans
    G - Derrick Rose
    SF - LeBron James
    PF - Kevin Love
    F - J.R. Smith
    C - Andrea Bargnani
    C - Marc Gasol
    Util - Brandon Jennings
    Util - Jeff Green
    Util - Mike Dunleavy
    Util - Danilo Gallinari
    Util - Stephen Curry

    Sauce:

    Points: 16.15
    Assists: 3.96
    Boards: 5.60
    Treys: 1.32
    Steals: 1.16
    Blocks: 0.62

    And, BTW, that guy Nene went for 19 pts (61.5% FG), 7 rbs and 4 assists the very first night after I traded him for Bargnani :(

    ReplyDelete
  35. Lex, I would just go for Jamison right now. The whole two wizards thing isn't a great idea if you can avoid it. However if twan gets dealt, we'll revisit this guy.

    LA, sounds like a plan to me! And yeah, Harris will be fine.

    ReplyDelete
  36. haha ok cool, i may be able to pull it off, althought im extremly hesitant to trade deron. i feel like he will make me regret it

    ReplyDelete
  37. Christo, if you can get Durant, for Reke and Gallinari, DO IT! DO IT NOW! And don't sweat nene's production, you did the right thing bro. Bargs will make you happy.

    LA, you didn't fall in love with Deron, did you? Josh Smith will make the other manager regret the deal too, so don't worry.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yeah, I've offered it already (and with that I've refuted your claim that I "LOVE Reke" :P). But somehow I think it won't come through any time soon, as the other manager is one of those you talked about in one of your previous posts - quite passive, even although he is the reigning champion of this Bulgarian league, as well as among the league leaders this season too (I'm in a close battle with him for 2nd place). My previous offer of Tyreke Evans and Nene for Kevin Durant stayed up there for more than a week and he never said anything...

    But, if that 2-1 trade miraculously comes through, who do you think I should pick up off FA - Griffin, Young, Hibbert or Morrow?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Christo, we're gonna make you the king of Bulgarian basketball! I'd say Grifiin without a doubt, and Hibbert would b my next choice.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Yeah, i agree. when he gets the playing time, sammy can sure put up solid numbers. that is a big IF tho.

    ReplyDelete
  41. thief, i decided to keep david lee for he got 25 and 11 and 15 and 15 last week.. that's why i just decided to trade jermaine for frye to resolve my problems in 3s..

    i also traded terry and varejao for ariza and blair for ariza gets 5.6 rebs/game which is a big help and i just want to have a 2:1 scenario because blair is not a big factor.. do you think these trades are acceptable?

    ReplyDelete
  42. oh wait, you also mentioned that if i want more depth.. i should go for those players and i found players that may look like that.. lamarcus,jr smith and hamilton gives me some depth but i am not so sure if hamilton can deliver 18-20ppg when gordon comes back and the minutes will be lower..

    i also looked for brook lopez. if i'm not mistaken, his averages are just like lee except the blocks... so i may not deal with him anymore since i have josh smith who has 2.4blks/game...

    so far,i think, my trade for channing frye and ariza is the greatest move right now but i am not satisfied and i want more depth.. can you pls say to me other options? thanks thief!! ^^

    ReplyDelete
  43. Anselmo, nice job and good trade. Let the dust settle from the games tonight and tomorrow and we'll work on some new targets. Nice grab of Frye.

    ReplyDelete
  44. by reading almost the half of your posts, i have found out that redd is a buy low,and a future sell high player...

    this is his starters:

    pg d-will
    sg-joe johnson
    sf- jason thompson
    pf-charlie villanueva
    c-luis scola

    when you first look at it.. it seems like he has a very good team but if you will calculate his sauce stats, his stls,treys and bloks is too low that's why i want to offer him peja and ilyasova for redd and warrick to make my lineup ready when i won't be able to pull the terry-ariza trade..

    so do you really think redd will be back to his old form after time and is the players that i will trade acceptable?
    thanks..

    ReplyDelete
  45. Ansel, yesand yes, but why ask for warrick? Just do the 2-1. We hope to sell Redd in mid January

    ReplyDelete
  46. hey thief, redd is now in the starting lineup of the bucks and he's now getting his minutes.. last night he got 41 minutes.. do you think now is the time to grab him up because i canceled the previous deal and i want now to make a 2-1 scenario? ^^

    ReplyDelete
  47. and if i can get redd and he will be hot again, what will i do to my jason terry??

    ReplyDelete
  48. Yeah, grab redd and deal him asap.

    ReplyDelete
  49. hey thief, pls answer me.. he made an offer..

    i wil get

    i am now looking to trade jermaine.. i decided him for flynn but i changed my mind because i have a cp3..
