What's new at Adsense? What changes are taking place?

Video Units are Retiring-Somewhat

It looks like the Video units have not been the success that Adsense thought they would be. With that being said, Adsense will quietly retire the Video units at the end of April.

If you still want to display video ads you'll still be able to do so, by going to YouTube directly.

But most importantly, this video unit retirement will not affect the availability of other video ad units that appear through the image/text or image option of your ads. So yes, Adsense for video is still accepting applications from eligible publishers who produce video content.

New Email Notifications

Adsense will be rolling out new email notification preferences in your account over the next few days.

What does that mean? You'll have the option to receive specific messages like event invitations, information about webinars, and personalized account suggestions from members of the Google Adsense team.

In a couple of days you see a one-time page when you sign-in to Google Adsense. You will be asked to select the type of email messages you would like to receive from them. What if you change your mind? No problem.

If you change your mind about the selections you chose, you can simply sign in to your Account, visit the Contact Preferences section within your Account Settings to update the type of emails you want to receive.

Apple Releases Second Beta of iPhone OS 3.0

Apple has seeded the second beta of iPhone OS 3.0 to developers, according to an AppleInsider report.

The Cupertino-based iPhone maker reportedly told developers downloading the build, labeled iPhone OS beta 2 build 7A259, that they could begin developing applications that will rely on the company's new Push Notification service immediately.

Similarly, developers were also provided with more detailed information on how to build in-app purchasing functionality into their existing or future applications. Much of this technical information will reportedly appear in a App Store Kit reference guide.

Reportedly the new build runs much faster than the first and is much more stable.

iPhone beta Recovery …

Recently I downloaded the iPhone beta 3.0 firmware upgrade and decided (without thinking it through) to update my phone to use the new version. In hindsight, Apple makes it pretty clear this is a bad idea, and warns you that you won't be able to revert to a prior version of the software:



But warnings were meant to be ignored, so I blithely went ahead and updated with the new firmware. Immediately after doing so, I had a d'oh moment when I realized I better not have my business phone running on beta software, so I wanted to revert.

Sony Slashes the Price of the PlayStation 2

Looking to scoop up a PlayStation 2? Starting tomorrow, April 1, Sony will cut the price of its gaming console to $100, down 25 percent from its current price of $130. Today's announcement is the third price cut for the PS2 since Sony's first discount in 2002.

Rumors had swirled in recent days that Sony was set to make a major PlayStation 3 announcement today. Industry watchers speculated that the company would announce a brand new browser, online content for the PS3, or perhaps a release date for God of War III. But the biggest rumor was that the PS3 was getting a $100 price drop as a way for Sony to improve slumping sales. In the end, it turns out that the rumor mill was way off.

According to December 2008 figures from Nielsen, the PS2 is still the most popular gaming system in use today. For its part, Sony doesn't seem to be letting up on development for the system even though its successor, the PS3, has been out for more than three years. Sony believes the PS2 has a 10-year lifecycle, meaning new games for the PS2 should wind down sometime in 2010. By year's end, Sony says there will be 1900 available titles for the PS2, including new releases like MLB 09 THE Show and MotorStorm: Arctic Edge.

While the attention of hardcore gamers is now focused on the next generation of systems like the PS3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360, the lowered price tag might mean a second life for the PS2. Playing action-based games like Call of Duty 2 or Unreal Tournament 2004 may help you improve your vision, according to a recent study by the University of Rochester. While neither of those games are available for the PS2, enterprising users (or doctors) just might be able to find PlayStation equivalents.
