Whether you work online or offline it's time to educate yourself of the new scams that have morphed itself from the phishing scams.
For those who do not know what a phishing scam let me enlighten you. And for those who have heard about a phishing scam, let me refresh your memory. A phishing scam is the attempt by an individual to gather personal and/or financial information from you through an e-mail, phone call or letter.
Now, what are some of the ways the phishing scams been morphed into?
E-mail phishing
The individual (scammer) will send an official looking e-mail pretending to have come from Paypal, credit union, bank, or even a retail establishment with the hope of gaining personal information. (Note: for those looking for jobs you have to be careful about solicitations from scammers enticing you to try for a position -and all you have to do is provide them
with some additional information.)
Vishing
Vishing is the use of your telephone. The victim will get an e-mail or voice mail message asking them to make a phone call. The victim will make the call which will trigger a voice response system asking the user for their card number or other personal or financial information.
Smishing
Smishing is a mobile phone scam. The mobile phone user will receive a text message with the purpose of getting the user to click on a link.
Phishing-through the mail
The phishing through the snail mail- (surprising as it may seem-since it does cost money to send a letter) is where the scammer sends an individual a letter requesting that they respond to the letter by calling a specific phone number- for their own protection. My advice, if it is an institution that you do business with-contact them to verify-before you decide to give that "specific phone number" a call.
How to protect yourself
1. Do not click on the link they provide.
2. If you want to check the link. Open up a session of the Internet and put in your stored link - NOT THE LINK provided within the email. And verify the information.
3. Contact the company that you are doing business with to make them aware of what is going on - and/or to verify that the email or letter was truly sent by the company. If it was not, then this warning will allow them to notify other people that they do business with, with what is happening.
4. If you do any business online - use security software
5. Make sure the website shows SSI security- (https//)
6. Make sure your browser is up-to-date and all security patches are current.
To conclude: use caution when giving out your personal information-online or offline.

Invalidating Page Caches in Mason
We have a number of websites that use Mason, a (relatively) old Perl library reportedly used by Amazon and Salon among other sites. It has built-in and flexible support for caching at pretty much any level the developer needs, but often the easiest thing to do is to cache the output of an entire component, which looks like this:
What I wanted to do was invalidate the cache when the users browser had a Cache-Control or Pragma directive that indicated they did not want cached content (for example, when the user holds down the Shift key and clicks "Refresh" or "Reload").
The naive implementation does not work:
I mean, it does work for the initial request but all subsequence requests will continue to get the old cached content because the cache has not been invalidated, only skipped. The very next request for that component will get the old, cached content -- not a cached copy of the freshly calculated content.
Slightly less naive implementations didn't work either because of the way cache_self works. I was basically trying variations of "expires yesterday" but this parameter was not being consulted when Mason considered whether or not to return the cached content.
Cutting a long story short (well, not that long but kinda boring) here's how I got the page cache to be invalidated ("expired") when the user hits Shift-Refresh:

What this code does is returns the cached content (provided it's younger than 4 hours) most of the time. But if the requesting client has indicated it does not want cached content then it invalidates Mason's copy of the cached output and then falls through to the bottom of the if block where normal. non-cached processing occurs.

The 50-page Adsense Report

Twenty different authors displaying unique articles explain the

feature five of the twenty people that contributed to this

At the bottom of this post you can quickly download the entire
PDF version which I have uploaded online. I was so thankful for
the quality of content in the guide and so sure of it's ability
to help people understand AdSense better that I burned it to a
CD and went to a copy center and printed it out on thick
cardstock. It's perfect light reading anywhere away from the
computer for sparking fresh ideas in terms of searches and
research.

The AdSense Report can also come with a small application which
stamps your name and your choice of a website onto the cover
page. It is such a useful tool for re-researching AdSense,
niche, and keywordinterests.
A funny thing happened when I took the CD to get it printed out.
The copy person accidentally printed the file on extremely
bright pink paper. The color combined with seeing "The Adsense
Report" in big bold black letters on the front cover attracted a
few long stares from neighboring customers and approaching
employees.
He started to throw it away and I asked if he could just give me
that one for a little cheaper. He charged me .04 cents a page
versus the normal .08 cents. I was happy.

generating good Adsense revenue and which are not. We can work
upon those poorly performing pages. If we can get to know about
which ads are being clicked, that would make us feel more
informed for many obvious reasons.

Free Stats.
Add Free Stats provides a very detailed web stats which
satisfies most webmasters. You may open a free account at :
http://www5.addfreestats.com, get the code and paste it at the
bottom of each of your pages.

3. Sometimes the stats are carried forward several days. This
happens when Google decides to freeze your clicks and earnings
for fraud checking/tracking purposes or server delays. Thus, you
may notice your earnings/clicks shoot straight up when you least
expect it. It is possible for your CTR to go up by as much as
10% and your CPM to raise $200 over the normal.
7. If you run a forum site, you may notice that your earnings
are very low. Here is a solution: use a simple cookie-based php
script that only displays AdSense ads once every 10 page views.

Adventurous soul that I am, I jumped in with both feet and
started to trial Adlinks on my most visited pages as soon as it
was launched. I'm using the four links in a square box format,
positioned top left of my page content. After a few weeks of
running Adlinks alongside regular Adsense ads, it's clear that
the return on Adlinks is about a fifth to a quarter higher than
regular ads. There's no clear reason for this but one
explanation may lie in the fact that clicking on an Adlink takes
the user to page of 'results'. When a user clicks on one of
these, you are paid for the click. If the user finds what they
want, great, if not, it seems that they hit the Back button on
their browser and try again, just as you would for normal search
engine results.

boosting my AdSense profits by 700%. Here are 5 of them, and if

yellow does this, but it does. On one of my sites, I changed my
Adsense ads to a bright red border and a yellow background with

page by using bright colors as all this achieves is making a big

as your links, it looks like they are an extension of your page.

keywords then the ads served on the page will be related to the

Work in Progress
I finished selecting and creating my fabrics last week after working out the details in my sketchbook (see my post on my new creative process). The lightest fabric I dyed, bleached, did rubbings with paint sticks, stamped, then layered on this really cool sheer fabric with mylar sparkles. The green fabric is layered too, some silk I dyed last year at Gale's studio over a hand dyed cotton jacquard weave. Over the weekend I constructed the blocks. Even though I planned only to use 4 blocks in my quilt I made 5 blocks because I wanted to use 5 different fabrics. At the last minute, I replaced two of the corner fabrics with a white on white fabric that I dyed deep blue. I didn't have enough of it to be one of the 5 fabrics, but I loved the fabric, so I threw in a little bit. Stepping back from the blocks now, I'm not sure I like it in this quilt. I might replace it with one of the 5 original fabrics.
As I was arranging and rearranging the blocks on my rolling design wall I threw the extra block on top of the others just to see what it looked like. I like it! I really like it. It makes the piece more interesting, and still in keeping with the theme of reflections. Or should I keep it simple...
What do you think? I would really appreciate your comments about this because I'm waffling on which arrangement to use.
