Are you Addicted to Blogging?

Internet Addiction

Recently a special show on NDTV attracted my mind. The topic was about Internet Addiction.Wikipedia defines Internet Addiction as

A pattern of internet use, leading to clinically significant impairment or distress as manifested by three of the following occurring at any time in the same 12-month period: -1- tolerance, -2- withdrawal, -3- internet is often accessed more often or longer than intended, -4- there is a persistent desire or unsuccessful effort to cut down or control internet use, -5- a great deal of time is spent in activities related to Internet use, -6- Frequent talks about the Internet in daily life, -7- important family, social, occupational, or recreational activities are given up or reduced (3).

Some people are addicted to IM services, some others are addicted to social networking sites like orkut & mypsace. Some love sharing emails while some can't live without Youtube videos. Some run after Internet Gaming. And many of them love blogging & reading blogs.

Blogging till a hobby is alright. When you'll be involved in blogging, you'll automatically have some dreams about posts & what would be new tomorrow.Such people {leaving full time bloggers} can't even live a day without it.It has become their habit to surf for long hours on the net. Reasons, they ignore environment, your health & families. You can take yourself's a test of blogging addiction by answering to some simple questions. The results may be scary.

Here are my results...

How to get rid of this Addiction ?

From my experience,I believe taking a holiday without laptops or mobiles and enjoying the outside world is a must for such people.Spending time with your families can also reduce your stress.

But My Blog Traffic, Feed Count will go down.

I don't say that you permanently go to long vacation (until you desperately require one).Leave a minimum gap of one day between your pervious blog update & the next one.

What I can say,is that if your content is original & interesting, nobody would un subscribe your feed.By changing your posting frequency, you will give appropriate time for your posts to be on the homepage which may be useful for SE indexing, and also may be visitor magnets.

If you are really addicted to internet, one day will come when you'll have one friend & one family, your PC.

Oracle Lite and SOA Suite

The Oracle SOA Suite bundles a number of Oracle products (BPEL Process Manager, ESB, Oracle Business Rules and Web Services Manager) to provide complete set of service infrastructure components for building, deploying, and managing SOAs. For the windows platform it also comes with slimmed down version of Oracle Lite, and embedded database.

Why Oracle Lite?
Oracle Lite has a lot of great features including data synchronisation, device management, as well as support for SQL92 and ACID transactions amongst other things. It is the embedded relational database features that are used for the 'basic' installation of SOA Suite on windows. Antony Reynolds recently posted a great article on basic and advanced installation options which really puts an emphasis on the fact that Oracle Lite is intend to get you developing fast and not for production environments.

In the development environment the SOA Suite will use Oracle Lite under the hood and generally you don't need to access this database. Of course, there are always the odd occasions when you do, such as tracing an error, or doing an upgrade.

Connecting to Oracle Lite
Over the summer a patch set was released to upgrade Oracle Application Server 10.1.3.1 (SOA Suite) to 10.1.3.3. The patch (#6148874) is available on metalink. The post installation steps involve running a database script. Since the SOA Suite is distributed with a slimmed down Oracle Lite there is no Mobile Client Workspace, i.e. webtogo web app, to manage the database, so the Mobile SQL Client is your easiest option.

Mobile SQL Client ($ORACLE_HOME\Mobile\Sdk\BIN\msql.exe) is used to connect to an Oracle Lite version 9 and upwards database. For earlier versions SQLPlus can be used. The version distributed with SOA Suite is 10.2.0.2. The usage is quite like SQLPlus:

msql system/manager@jdbc:polite:
For the SOA Suite there are three databases: orabpel, oraesb, orawsm. Connecting to the database used by Oracle BPEL Process Manager looks like this:

D:\msql system/manager@jdbc:polite:orabpel

Oracle Lite MSQL Version 10.2.0.2.0
Copyright (c) 1997, 2005, Oracle. All rights reserved.

Connected to: Oracle Lite ORDBMS
Database Name: ORABPEL (Read Write)
Database Version: 10.2.0.2.0
Auto Commit: off
Driver Name: oracle.lite.poljdbc.POLJDBCDriver (OLite 4.0)

SQL>

Alternatives
Another option to using Mobile SQL Client is to use Oracle SQL Developer a free graphical tool for database development. Just use the same JDBC connection properties that you can find in the Enterprise Manager, and ensure the olite*.jar files (in Mobile/SDK/bin) are in the classpath.

Summary
Oracle Lite is OK for a small SOA Suite development environment and even the slimmed down version that is distributed provides access to the databases via the Mobile SQL Client.

Going Online - How Some Newbies Begin

There are many times that I receive emails from individuals that want to make money fast. And it is usually the newbie that goes for the typing job. For those looking to go online, and are thinking about the possibility of "typing" online - read the info below before charging ahead and losing your money.

Going Online-How Some Newbies Begin

By Vickie J Scanlon

Everyone has their own reasons for trying to make it online. Some do it on the pretense of expressing themselves. But many are looking for ways to make money. With me, I was looking for a way to make money online from my home. The one scam that most newbies encounter and are usually taken in by is the “Typing from your Home” scam.

When most people come online, they think they can do some type of typing job online. If you are one of those individuals, you’re not alone-for that was my thought as well. But let me begin by saying, “Stop that thought.” And if you have found a site that offers typing with no experience necessary, then ask yourself- "How can that be?" But if that thought, which in most cases is shoved in the background does not make you stop and think, then remember these questions before proceeding.

Does it have a nice looking site? Of course, if it looked shabby, your radar would be alerted.

Does it have a phone to contact them? Maybe. But is there anyone at the other end?

Can you contact them by email? “Sure”, you say. Did you try contacting them? Go ahead and try. You will find that they are rather illusive.

Did you check the Better Business Bureau online?
(Sometimes, newbies do not. They are not seasoned yet, to the lack of integrity or honesty of some webmasters. This naiveté is the hardest to get a handle on. Trust me I know.)

Before you mutter the silent words of- "But it looks like a legitimate site - I'm sure it's okay." You have to ask yourself-is my logical mind working here, or is it my ultimate desire to make money that is driving me into a bad situation. Most time, sad to say, it is desire.

If you go ahead and do it (as most first timers do), you will work long, long, long hours, and get very, very little money, if anything at all. Or they will find reasons why they won’t pay you. Who profits? They do. And one additional insult to all this, is that when you put their ads on other people's sites, you can get a spammer label.

Not all jobs are scams. But you must do your research. And-if you have to pay for a typing job- that is the first indication that the opportunity is a scam.

Feedvertise on a blogger blog

You can easily sell off RSS ads if you are using self hosted Wordpress by Feedvertising program of Text Link Ads or can directly sell some text links in the your post bottom if you have got a wide RSS audience with a plugin.

Blogger too has got a similar feature but involves a game playing with it.You need to go to Settings > Site Feed > Feed Item footer .And add the desired HTML in the Feed Item footer text area.Remember to redirect your feed to feedburner, enable post pages and a full site feed.

You can also add Adsense for Feeds code here if you are participating in it.Remember  Adsense for content and Referrals ads will not show up using this trick.

This method can also be used as a copyrights measure

I have added a copyright message which includes a link back to this blog from where Technorati reactions tracker could be used.

The copyright text is shown up in feed.

And the the person who used my site feed to put the exact content is caught using the technorati tracker.I have visited and flagged the blog.Hope, Blogger tem takes an action soon so that visitors get information from original source.

Why Personal Blogging is a much better option

This week's twister.Tired of blogging for some bucks? why not try a personal blog. From my experience of personal blogging for 1 month, I'm feeling much excited blogging.Reasons?

You don't think what to write

Things just go by and you blog them.Unlike these professional money making blogs where you need to think with an evil mind and write a unique and top notch post.Quite stressful to your little mind.

Google.Who?

Why should I care about my search engine listings? Or bite nails how much pagerank I will get after the next export {if it ever happens smile_shades} .And now see, the condition of all "Pro" Bloggers, how they are sweating, running after each and every Google Data Center for just the slightest hint about their new pagerank after export.{which ill not happen this month for sure}

Wordpress or Blogger?

Why should I bother whether its is hosted on blogger or on wordpress?I just need a simple blogging software that lets me put my content in the web.And as the blogger of Webtalks , I constantly face the dilemma between Blogger and Wordpress

Dont feed your feeds

I don't care of my feed readers{of personal blog of course}  whether  they would be happy with the kind of posting frequency I'll be having on my blog. But here on Webtalks, I've kept some scheduled posts in draft so that your subscribing to this feed isn't worthless

Design? Optimization ? for what?

Since, I switched over to the current blog template, I've some 20 people shooting me emails from where did I get it and can they too have this one? Saw, people just try to copy your blog.Run after each other. As for my personal blog, Minima Black just suits it.Since it is a basic two column template , for the first time I have got a full valid CSS on w3org.And from my opinion it looks much better than Webtalks as it is adfree

But Can it make money online?

Yep.But first you need to develop it.and you must be knowing the John Chow dot com was initially started as a personal blog and used to enough traffic that will give round 300$'s in first month of monetizing by Adsense!

So how's your "personal" blog performing?

For my case, believe it or not, I've got some 30 RSS readers who just subscribed it using the common "Subscribe to Posts(Atom)" link.I haven't started monetizing it and have no plans to do so for until I really feel the need for it.

Benefits of an LCD Monitor

Are there really any benefits from an LCD Monitor? To tell you the truth I never thought about it until a friend of mine came to the house and saw my monitor -and said "You sure have a small monitor. It must kill your eyes, especially if you're on the computer all day." Okay, that really shamed me-I knew I was stuck within the 20th century technology. But would the LCD be any different from my CRT?

To tell you the truth, I never really gave much thought to the monitor. I just knew it got the job done for me. But then I began to wonder- Are there any real benefits to owning an LCD monitor or will my CRT win out. Here is what I found from my research.

Reasons to Buy an LCD Monitor
By Vickie J. Scanlon

Are you still using a CRT monitor, because well, it's paid for and it still works? That was my reasoning. "And besides, I'm happy with it," I told myself as I squinted at the screen and lightly rubbed my sore eyes. "I guess I need a good reason to buy a LCD monitor, especially since my CRT is working just find? So let's find out what the LCD can do for you.

LCD Hype

You've heard all the promotions to the LCD monitor, right. Is it all hype, or is there truth to what is being said. If you are a Johnny Come Lately, with a wait and see attitude, then you will be surprised to know that LCD monitors do offer greater image quality.

For the money conscious, let's first say that many people have abandoned their CRT monitors and moved to the LCD PC monitor, which helps to lower the prices. But it doesn't answer why you should buy a LCD monitor.

Why are People getting LCD Monitors

The first important reason, is of course, it's important to your health. Most CRT's are smaller and harder on the eyes. With the LCD, images are easier to see and text is easier to read. And if you're an entertainment enthusiast or love video games, than the LCD monitor should be your choice. Why?

According to Professor Alan Hedge of Cornell University article - Ergonomics Considerations of LCD versus CRT Displays Dept. Design & Environmental Analysis, - there are many reasons to consider an LCD.

LCD monitor:

1) Is free from flickers, which can reduce headaches and eyestrain, and the geometric image distortions at the screen's edge are eliminated from the LCD.
2) offers uniform screen brightness and reduces glare
3) LCD saves space on your desktop
4) LCD takes less energy to run
5) LCD offers better screen privacy because they can not be viewed from the side angles.
6) LCD offer less heat emissions
7) LCD monitor come in sizes to compliment anyone's viewing pleasure

CRT monitor:

1) Is not free from flickers
2) CRT offers geometric image distortions at the screen's edge
3) CRT is bulky and takes up space
4) Because of the size and the intermittent flickering it can produce far more eye-strain. Of course, this is not good, especially if you have to work on a computer for long periods. Let's just say, you could expect to have bottle caps for glasses, or if you don't wear glasses, anticipate the possibility.
5) CRT takes more money to run
6) Heat emissions are greater

So, in the long run, are you saving money with your old CRT? Probably not, if you include your health. But I believe many people have realized that not only does the LCD quench the "I want the LCD monitor because it's cool", but maybe some are seeing the many benefits it does give you, from initial cost of running the monitor to it's many health benefits.

So if you're not ready to hand over the dough yet, don't worry, prices are coming down steadily. And soon, the CRT will be history and the LCD will become the standard. Though the CRT did it's job, we all must part with the old and soon step into the 21st century. Are you ready? I know I sure am.

Does your Blog needs a fresh look too?

Recently, some biggies' in the blogosphere had a brush on their blogs like Darren of Problogger and the most evil blogger ever,John Chow.which are the topic of these days discussions. The big question is

Does your blog needs a extreme design makeover too?

Some say its a 50-50 case.I say there are more advantages than disadvantages.

Advantages of giving a fresh look

  • We are humans. Its probably one of the most basic feature that you'll be bored with your design. You'll be more interested in tweaking the new layout rather than the old ones

  • More Room.According to Google analytics,70% of my traffic uses 1024 x 768 resolution or above. There was no point to waste some precious space for the remaining 30 % who used the lower resolutions.Though while designing,I kept in mind that at least the post area is completely visible to the ones using the lower resolutions without scrolling horizontally. With more space you can of course get more Ad spots{every one wants bucks}.Moreover, you'll let your visitors rediscover your site by linking to some good articles of the past

  • Impress Advertisers.Content is the King,Design is the queen.Everyone gets better with the more they write but design remains the same the one you created when you were a newbie. Advertisers hate blogs where sidebar's dropping, or some overlapping is there even when the content is better than that of A-Listers.A highly optimized and stylish look will act as an advertiser magnet

  • Build Buzz.Summertime's just over and your evil mind is not giving you excellent ideas.Just go through a design makeover and you'll have people talking about your new design.According to Technorati, JC.com{johnchow} got 100 back links with blogs just talking about the new design and same goes for Darren's problogger. They are all over the forums and social networks

Disadvantages
  • You'll loose originality. Some say, with the fresh design may be cooler than the previous one but it isn't designed by the actual owner of blog in most cases and hence it looses trademark of the blog

  • It won't be perfect.John Chow is still not able to correct the horizontal scrolling glitch because he hasn't actually designed the blog.Though the most designers do their level best to give 100% result a few bugs are still uncovered

  • It will cost you.Don't expect the person designing to be generous.Good designers charge heavily. This problem is faced especially by small bloggers.

Ok I'm interested, but where to get a new design?

For Wordpress, JustSkins and Unique Blog designs are accepting applications

For Blogger{mind you XML commonly known as "new Blogger"}we are are pleased to say that we can offer you a good design. We have already done two design makeovers, one of them is available here
